Buhari appoints Mohammed Kari Commissioner for Insurance

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday appointed Alhaji Mohammed Kari as the Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive of the National Insurance Commission. 
 
Kari replaces Mr. Fola Daniel. 
 
According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the appointment, which is for a term of four years in the first instance, takes effect from Friday, July 31 2015. 
 
The new Commissioner for Insurance started his career with Royal Exchange Assurance in  1979.  
 
He later worked with Yankari Insurance Company until 1989, when he was appointed Executive Director in Niger Insurance Plc.  
 
In January 1992, he was appointed Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria Reinsurance Corporation, a position he held until March 1993 when he was appointed Managing Director of NICON Insurance Corporation. He served in that capacity until January 2000 when he resigned. 
 
He returned to insurance management in 2007 as the Managing Director/Chief Executive of Unity Kapital Assurance Plc, where he served for four years. 
 
A Chartered Insurer and Professional IT Consultant, Alhaji Mohammed Kari was, until his new appointment, was the Deputy Commissioner (Technical) in the National Insurance Commission. 
 
Buhari has also renewed the appointment of Mr. Joshua Okpo as the Rector of the Maritime Academy, Oron for a second and final term of four years.

United States has said it is supporting the Federal Government in terms of intelligence sharing in the fight against Boko Haram.
US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, stated this on Friday in a Facebook question and answer session.
Entwistle pointed out that the US government under President Barack Obama was doing its best to make Nigeria wins the war against terrorism.
The envoy added, "No partner is doing more to help you against Boko Haram than the United States. We hope to train more of your troops; we are glad to discuss weapons transfers and we engage in significant information sharing, which I cannot discuss in detail in this setting.
"We also are doing everything we can to support the population of internally displaced Nigerians from the north-east and to help Nigeria create conditions that will prevent something like the scourge of Boko Haram from ever happening again in Nigeria.
"The US has for years had a beneficial working relationship with the Nigerian military, especially in the counter-terrorism struggle against Boko Haram. Now more than ever, we are committed to assisting our Nigerian partners as appropriate. That involves training, sharing of information and, in some cases, helping the Nigerian military with its equipment needs.
"The Leahy amendment requires that for all countries, we can not train known human rights abusers or that our equipment not be used in depredations against civilian populations."
Entwistle noted that paying attention to human rights would not distract from fighting terrorists.
He explained that on the contrary, it would make for a stronger counter-terrorism effort since it allowed the military to keep civilian populations on their side in the midst of the incredibly difficult task of fighting terrorists, who did not care about human rights or protecting civilians.
On stolen Nigeria's money allegedly in US banks, the ambassador stated that the US government was ready to continue its efforts to "find funds that were 'looted out of the country' and may now be in the US bank accounts."
He, however, urged Nigerians to exercise patience, saying the process of finding the looted funds was an "extremely complicated process which takes detailed investigation."
According to Entwistle, the cases can sometimes take time in the US courts.

I had not been in the country for almost two months, when it arrived .By the time I came to Nigeria,I looked at it.I mean,even if I had never used a designer before,I would know that was fake. 
 
The bag was like $3000 because that was what she sent with the picture. I think they tend to send you the original copy of what ever it is. So that is what I got and I said I didn’t like it because it was fake and I couldn’t give that out as a gift.” 
 
On how she resolved it, the actress said “I actually burnt the box ..Yes I burnt the box ..I couldn’t keep the box because I didn’t want it to be said that I kept it and was going to use it at some point.” 
On why she didn’t return it, Tontolet said “I was going to give her but it was with my housekeeper for two months,waiting got her to take it.And when the instagram thing came out the next thing she sent me was a very insulting text message.”

The feud between the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party and the staff of the national headquarters of the party in Abuja deepened on Friday as the aggrieved employees accused the members of the NWC of being too corrupt. 
 
The angry workers also accused the members of the NWC of demanding N1bn bribe from the Governor of Kogi State, Idris Wada, before he could secure the party’s governorship ticket. 
 
The governorship election in the state comes up later in the year.

They alleged further that the NWC members demanded and received N750m bribe from Mr. Ndudi Elumelu with a promise to give him the PDP governorship ticket in Delta State for the 2015 general elections.

President Muhammadu Buhari said Friday in Abuja that with the formation of a stronger regional coalition, Nigeria and neighbouring countries now have an increased capacity to deal effectively with Boko Haram and other terrorist groups. 
 
Speaking at an audience with Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa, President Buhari reaffirmed his belief that the full activation and deployment of the Multi National Joint Task Force which has been established under the auspices of the Lake Chad Basin Commission will lead to the speedy defeat and elimination of Boko Haram.

The President added that with the Command and Control Centre of the Nigerian military now in Maiduguri, Borno State, the morale of troops in the front-line states had improved significantly. 
“You can tell the Secretary-General that we are doing our best and our best will be good enough for the nation and the sub-region,” President Buhari told Dr. Ibn Chambas. 
 
Against the background of upcoming elections in Cote D’Ivoire, Guinea and Burkina Faso, the President also called on the United Nations to assist African countries in the acquisition and use of innovative technologies to ensure more credible elections. 
 
“When citizens recognize that their votes count, it will boost their confidence in democracy and their countries’ electoral systems,” he said. 
 
Recalling that in the last general elections in Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission used smart card readers to authenticate prospective voters, President Buhari observed that while Nigeria could afford the use of such technology in its elections, other African countries may require support and assistance from the international community. 
 
Dr. Ibn Chambas commended President Buhari for his strong and positive actions against terrorism. 
The United Nations envoy also welcomed President Buhari’s successful visit to Cameroon this week and his reaffirmation of Nigeria’s commitment to the peaceful resolution of all border issues with Cameroon.

According to the Executive Producer of BON Awards, Seun Oloketuyi, the actor's death was confirmed by president of The Golden Movie Ambassadors of Nigeria, Comrade Saidi Balogun. 
 
Ajigijaga who was popular in the early 90’s for his roles as a gang leader, was aged 60. 
 
The late Ogun State born actor was also a member of Guild of Actors, Directors, and Producers in Nigeria. 
 
It was learnt that the actor died at his residence at Oko-Oba, Agege, Lagos today July 31st following injuries he sustained from a motorcycle (okada) accident two weeks ago.

 A female suicide bomber and Boko Haram gunmen killed 16 people in Nigeria as the commander of a new multinational force tasked with fighting the Islamists pledged on Friday to crush the insurgency “very soon”. 
 
Major General Iliya Abbah’s appointment in an Abuja ceremony as chief of the 8,700-strong force came as a woman bomber on a tricycle killed six people in a busy market in Maiduguri, the largest city in Nigeria’s restive northeastern Borno state.

The jihadists also struck neighbouring Yobe state, killing at least 10 people including two women on Wednesday evening in a revenge attack against local vigilantes, a local official told AFP on Friday. 
 
The suicide attack was the latest in a wave of Boko Haram bombings — often by female bombers — targeting markets in Nigeria, Chad and Cameroon that have killed and wounded scores in the past month. 
 
Boko Haram has kidnapped thousands of civilians, including women and children, with many either forced or indoctrinating into joining the extremists, official say. 
 
“The attack (on the Gamboru) market happened around 6:30 am (0530 GMT) as the grocers were arriving,” Babakura Kolo, a vigilante in Maiduguri, told AFP. 
 
“From accounts we gathered from people around, the woman arrived on a taxi tricycle, as every woman grocer does. She blew herself up as soon as the tricycle stopped in the midst of other tricycles dropping traders off,” Kolo said. 
 
Another local resident was at home when he heard the blast, and he rushed to the scene immediately afterwards. 
 
“The place was littered with victims and burning rickshaws,” he told AFP. 
 
Gamboru market is the second largest in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state and birthplace of Boko Haram, which has killed at least 15,000 people since its bloody insurgency began in 2009. 
 
The extremist group, whose name roughly translates as “Western education is forbidden”, has carried on its campaign of attacks on security forces, suicide bombings and bloody raids on villages across Nigeria’s north and eastern borders despite a major regional military campaign against them. 
 
– Lake Chad offensive – 
The new multinational force, whose troops Abbah said would be deployed “any time from today”, is expected to be more efficient than the regional offensive launched in February. 
 
The force will contain troops from Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger and Chad, with Benin also committed to help. 
 
“I assure (you), by the will of God, that I will live (up) to expectations and we will see the end of this menace very soon,” Abbah said in Abuja. 
 
However Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has recently complained of a lack of resources, raising concerns over the force’s chances of defeating Boko Haram once and for all. 
 
The Chadian army has gone ahead and waged a vast offensive of its own in the past fortnight, targeting Islamists holed up around Lake Chad and claiming to have killed “117 terrorists”. 
 
Two soldiers have died and two were injured, a military spokesman said. 
 
Alayi Wari, who fled his home in Fitinewa on Lake Chad for Nigeria, told AFP Boko Haram had stormed 10 villages in the past month, and that the army has since recaptured seven. 
 
But Bullu Dagi, who has fled his home in Midi, said the villages were still “virtually deserted”. 
 
“Although most of the these villages have been reclaimed, residents are still afraid to return,” Dagi said. 
 
– Hideout 
 
Boko Haram has used the Lake Chad region as a hideout to fall back from offensives by Nigerian and Chadian troops inside Nigeria. The lake lies where the borders of Cameroon, Chad and Nigeria converge. 
 
The region has seen a surge in violence since Buhari took office in May vowing to crush Boko Haram’s campaign for an Islamic caliphate. 
 
The latest attacks follow a visit this week by Buhari to Cameroon to discuss a stronger regional alliance in the wake of an unprecedented wave of five suicide bombings there. 
 
Two of those attacks killed at least 33 people in the northern market town of Maroua, where a police officer on Friday confirmed a report that they had arrested three youths on Thursday, one allegedly carrying a plastic bag full of explosives.

The world’s population is projected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, 9.7 billion by 2050 and exceed 11 billion in 2100, with India expected to surpass China as the most populous around seven years from now and Nigeria overtaking the United States to become the world’s third largest country around 35 years from now. 
 
This was contained in the report that was recently released by the United Nations in New York. 
 
Moreover, the report reveals that during the 2015-2050 period, half of the world’s population growth is expected to be concentrated in nine countries: India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania, the United States, Indonesia and Uganda.

Wu Hongbo, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, whose department produced the 2015 Revision of World Population Prospects, the 24th round of official UN population estimates and projections, noted that understanding the demographic changes that are likely to unfold over the coming years “is key to the design and implementation of the new development agenda.” 
 
United Nations Member States are currently in the process of crafting a successor agenda to the landmark Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which wrap up at the end of this year. A new framework, focused on poverty eradication, social inclusion and preserving the health of the planet, is set to be adopted at a special UN summit, in New York this September. 
 
According to the report’s projections, the current world population of 7.3 billion is expected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100. 
 
“Most of the projected increase in the world’s population can be attributed to a short list of high-fertility countries, mainly in Africa, or countries with already large populations,” according to the report. 
 
At present, China and India remain the two largest countries in the world, each with more than 1 billion people, representing 19 and 18 per cent of the world’s population, respectively, but by 2022, the population of India is expected to surpass that of China, according to the report’s projection. 
 
Among the 10 largest countries in the world currently, one is in Africa (Nigeria), five are in Asia (Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, and Pakistan), two are in Latin America (Brazil and Mexico), one is in Northern America (US), and one is in Europe (Russian Federation). 
 
“Of these, Nigeria’s population, currently the seventh largest in the world, is growing the most rapidly,” said the report. Consequently, the population of Nigeria is projected to surpass that of the United States by about 2050, at which point it would become the third largest country in the world. 
 
The report also projected that by 2050 the populations of six countries are expected to exceed 300 million: China, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and the United States. 
 
And with the highest rate of population growth, Africa is expected to account for more than half of the world’s population growth over the next 35 years. 
 
During this period, the report said, the populations of 28 African countries are projected to more than double, and by 2100, 10 African countries are projected to have increased by at least a factor of five: Angola, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mali, Niger, Somalia, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania and Zambia. 
 
“The concentration of population growth in the poorest countries presents its own set of challenges, making it more difficult to eradicate poverty and inequality, to combat hunger and malnutrition, and to expand educational enrolment and health systems, all of which are crucial to the success of the new sustainable development agenda,” said John Wilmoth, Director of the UN’s Population Division. 
 
In contrast to the growth projections, a significant ageing of the population in the next several decades is projected for most regions, starting with Europe where 34 per cent of the population is projected to be over 60 years old by 2050. In Latin America and the Caribbean and in Asia, the population will be transformed from having 11 per cent to 12 per cent of people over 60 years old today to more than 25 per cent by 2050. 
 
Further to the report, life expectancy at birth has increased significantly in the least developed countries in recent years. The six-year average gain in life expectancy among the poorest countries, from 56 years in 2000-2005 to 62 years in 2010-2015, is roughly double the increase recorded for the rest of the world. While significant differences in life expectancy across major areas and income groups are projected to continue, they are expected to diminish significantly by 2045-2050.

 Two policemen were shot to death by suspected armed robbers during an attack on the Okene branch of First Bank on Friday. 
 
Eyewitnesses said the robbery suspects, numbering about five, invaded the premises of the bank at about 8.55a.m. and shot sporadically into the air to scare away workers and customers.

About five policemen on duty were said to have responded swiftly by engaging the invaders in a gun duel at the end of which two of the policemen were felled. 
 
The incident disrupted commercial and other activities in and around the Old Prison Junction area where the bank is located. 
 
Police Public Relations Officer in Kogi, Mr Shola Adebayo, said one of the policemen was killed on the spot while his colleague died on the way to hospital. 
 
He said the police had started trailing the robbers as investigation into the attack had commenced. (NAN)

A Lagos High Court judge, Justice Justice Iyabo Akinkugbe today ordered the Mushin Local Government Area authority to suspend its plan to demolish parts of the popular Ladipo Auto Spare Parts Market, for the purpose of re-development. 
 
Akinkugbe, said it would only be in the interest of justice that the LGA put its demolition plan on hold pending the determination of a suit challenging the project. 
 
Some auto spare parts dealers, who own shops at the market, had headed for the court claiming that the planned demolition would disturb the peaceful and quiet enjoyment of their tenancy at the market. 
The marketers, through their lawyer, Richard Nwankwo, sought an order of perpetual injunction restraining the LGA and its agents from going ahead with the demolition and ejection plan, which they claimed was coming at a time when their rents had not lapsed.

At today’s proceedings, Nwankwo argued an ex parte application, urging the court to make an order for the parties to maintain status quo pending when the issues in the main suit would be determined. 
Nwanko told the court that ever since the first invasion of the market by agents of the defendant at about 4.30am on June 30, 2015, the auto spare parts dealers had been living under the apprehension that the defendant would eject them. 
 
The lawyer alleged that in spite of the intervention of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, who met with the parties on July 1 and ordered that peace should be maintained, the Executive Secretary of Mushin LGA, Mr. Jide Bello, had not relented on his threat to eject the marketers. 
 
Convincing the court to grant the application, Nwankwo argued that the LGA would not suffer any loss if the court stopped it from taking further steps in its demolition and ejection plan until a decision was made by the court in the main suit. 
 
After hearing the lawyer’s argument, the judge said she was convinced that it would serve the interest of justice for the parties to maintain status quo pending the determination of the main suit and so ordered. 
 
The judge subsequently adjourned till August 4, 2015 to hear the main application. 
 
The plaintiffs in the suit are Nnamdi Chukwuka, Franco Offai, Vitus Okoyeagu, Felix Okafor, Peter Benson and Richard Olisakwe. 
 
Others are Godwin Onyeka, Emeka Ikeh, Romanus Ezimora and Darlington Ugochukwu. 
In the affidavit filed in support of their application, they alleged that without a prior notice, agents of the Mushin Local Government Area had invaded the market, and with the help of “hoodlums and rented armed policemen” commenced demolition of their shops. 
 
They claimed that the respondent, after the invasion, had continued to threaten them with ejection and demolition. 
 
Chukwuka, who deposed to the affidavit, said the demolition and ejection threat by Bello was coming while the plaintiffs had subsisting rents. 
 
The deponent, who accused Bello of hiding under “the guise of redeveloping the market”, said, “The respondent also deployed some equipment in the market and removed roofs of the applicants’ shops. 
“The hoodlums went on a looting spree, carting away some of our expensive goods, cash and other valuables.”

A female suicide bomber blew herself up on Friday at a big market in the northeast Nigerian city of Maiduguri. 
 
The National Emergency and Management Agency has said that 6 people were killed, while 11 others were wounded. 
 
The attack occurred at a parking area in the market.

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, on Friday urged Nigerians to learn from the examples of the party’s founding fathers and move the nation forward.

Odigie-Oyegun said this in Abuja at an event organised by a coalition of Buhari Support Groups to mark the second anniversary of the formation of the APC. 
 
The Chairman, who was represented by the party’s National Auditor, Dr. George Moghalu, said the party today was enjoying the unity and determination of its founders. 
 
He challenged all party members not to rest on their oars and rise above board to fulfill the dreams of visions of the party. 
 
He said: ”Let us learn from the fact that they put their personal interest at abeyance so that national interest would be at the fore. 
 
”They were united and determined. They forgave one another during the process of disagreeing to agree. They spent sleepless nights so that we could breathe the air of freedom. 
 
”The good news is that their sacrifice paid off at the end of the day. Victory came. The victory was not accidental, we all worked hard for it. 
 
”I call on you today to emulate those qualities above as we mark the formation of our great party two years ago. 
 
”For us to continuously be victorious we must not rest on our oars. As you will agree with me for you to constantly be successful, you must work hard and focus on retaining your victory.” 
 
He urged all to “plant the seeds of change” in all nooks and crannies of the country to fast track development. 
 
The convener of the event, Mr. Lawal Munir said the celebration would further ”enhance unity among the support groups. 
 
”We will drive the cause of attaining unity among the support groups and work towards the progress of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.”

 The Police on Friday took over the Peoples Democratic Party Secretariat in Ado Ekiti, as crisis rocking the party in the State took a new twist. 
 
Armed policemen numbering 50, one Armoured Personnel Carrier and operational vehicles were deployed in the Secretariat to prevent attack from the aggrieved members of the State Working Committee, perceived to be working against the interest of the governor.

The State Executive Committee at its meeting presided over by the Acting Chairman, Idowu Faleye, suspended the factional Acting Chairman, Mr. Tunde Olatunde; State Secretary, Tope Aluko; Auditor, Tunji Olanrewaju; Woman Leader, Busola Oyebode and Assistant Secretary, Mr Femi Esan. 
The SEC at its Friday meeting also set up a seven-member disciplinary committee to try the suspended members for anti-party activities. 
 
The members are Kolapo Kolade (Chairman), Babade Ige, Animasaun Bamidele, Mrs Lanre Fajuyi, Smart Adebusuyi, Dele Ajibola and Mr. Kola Lawal. 
 
The party’s resolution was read by the State Publicity Secretary, Jackson Adebayo, whose appointment was also ratified by SEC. 
 
But speaking earlier at a press briefing, Aluko, who appeared to have got wind of the plot to suspend them, said Faleye remained suspended and lacked powers to preside over any SEC meeting having resigned on May 13. 
 
“Nobody can push me out of PDP. I have invested so much to build the party. But if the party is heading to implosion , then I will take my destiny in my own hands, because nobody has the right to my happiness more than myself. 
 
“PDP is being run in line with the constitution of the party. If this is the case, it came to me as a shock that the party could come up with this action through Jackson Adebayo and Idowu Faleye, who have been suspended by the authentic PDP leaders. 
 
“Though, we owe it a duty to respect the NWC, but for the suspended Chairman to do that, was a deliberate attempt to destroy the party, is rather frightening , embarrassing and also disturbing.” 
Aluko told journalists in Ado Ekiti that they would not appear before any panel set up by Faleye as he had ceased to be the chairman. 
 
According to him, 11 of the 14 SWC are not with Faleye so he cannot have the quorum to take any legal action. 
 
He added that Faleye had not been properly registered as a member of the PDP in his ward, having defected from Labour Party. 
 
“If somebody is saying the way to resolve the issue is by suspending others, it shows Faleye is not a core PDP member and does not know the Constitution. 
 
“I’m saying there is no suspension in PDP. I’m the secretary of SEC. For you to convene the meeting of SEC, you must give 48 hours notice. If this is the decision of the faction, it means there is a problem coming to PDP and we will not run from it. 
 
“This was how the problem started at the centre and they thought it would not make impact and now it has made impact,” he said.

he New Commander of the Multi National Joint Task Force, Maj. Gen. Ilyasu Abbah, on Friday took over the leadership of the body from his predecessor, Maj. Gen. Tukur Buratai, who is now the Chief of Army Staff. 
 
Abbah said while taking over from Buratai at a brief ceremony held at Army Headquarters, Abuja, on Friday, that the task against the Boko Haram insurgents was not insurmountable.

The new MNJTF Commander demanded robust intelligence, logistic supply and administration to ensure effective decimation of the Boko Haram insurgents in the sub region. 
 
He stressed that if the three basic requirements were met, he and his team had the capacity to change the story of the Boko Haram in the area. 
 
He assured the Army high command of his readiness to performance his new responsibilities effectively in accordance with expectations and bring the Boko Haram menace to an end soon. 
 
He said, “As an infantry officer, like the COAS has already said, I am equal to the task; it is a trend that I just went on sabbatical in the Military Secretary’s office. 
 
“So I am back to the same terrain, and I think I am going to operate better there provided I have the three basic things that I need – capacity building for the forces, which includes robust intelligence, proper back-up of logistic and administration. 
 
“Once these three basic things are there, I assure you, when we hit the ground running, the story will be different. I know that Nigeria is most hit by this menace but definitely, like they always say, whatever affects one affects all.” 
 
Buratai, who expressed confidence in the ability of Abbah to lead the MNJTF, said several international organisations were making donations towards the operationalisation of the task force established to curtail the activities of the Boko Haram in the Lake Chad Basin. 
 
He added that the Africa Union had received some funds donated by the United Kingdom and the European Union in support of the countries of the Lake Chad Basin, who were united in the fight against the Boko Haram. 
 
The COAS stated that with the structure and personnel in place at the headquarters of the MNJTF in Ndjamena, Chad, the task force had commenced operation. 
 
Buratai said, “The MNJTF, as it is now, has commenced operation. The headquarters has been established; the staff officers are there. With the change, when the new commander moves in to Ndjamena in a few days’ time, he would continue to ensure that the headquarters is properly established. 
 
“The sectors I have coordinated have also come on board; and just before I came, the operational directive was issued, streamlining the task and responsibilities of all the sectors.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Head of Service of the Federation, Danladi Kifasi, to facilitate the immediate release of the N5 billion pledged by the Federal Government since August 2014 for the Victims Support Fund (VSF), the presidency announced Friday. 
 
The fund was created to support victims of bomb attacks. 
 
President Buhari gave the directive after receiving a briefing from the VSF Presidential Committee headed by former defence minister, Theophilus Danjuma, at the Presidential Villa.

Mr. Danjuma told the president that out of the N55.92 billion pledged at the fund-raising dinner for the fund in August last year, N33.54 billion was still outstanding, including N5 Billion from the Federal Government. 
 
He said the VSF currently has N23.33 billion in four bank accounts. 
 
Mr. Danjuma urged the president to use his office to persuade all organizations and individuals to honour their pledges to the Committee. 
 
The committee also revealed how several wealthy Nigerians who made pledges failed to redeem them, and how former President Jonathan directed that the funds should not be released for operations already handled by the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA. 
 
Mr. Danjuma told President Buhari that the former president gave approval for the funds to be incorporated into a Trust Fund, to “insulate it from political interference”. 
 
President Buhari urged the Committee to ensure proper coordination with other government agencies providing support and assistance to victims of terrorism. 
 
The president assured Mr. Danjuma and members of the VSF Committee that his administration was taking proactive steps to defeat terrorism in the country. 
 
He said that despite the challenge of acquiring much needed strategic equipment and weapons to confront the terrorists, the Nigerian military has recently gained much ground in its effort to defeat and degrade Boko Haram. 
 
He added that the full deployment of the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF), under the auspices of member-states of Lake Chad Basin Commission, will further boost ongoing military operations against the insurgents.

The statement noted that on July 30, at about 12.10 a.m., a male bank customer went to withdraw money from one of the ATMs at the Central Business District (CBD), Abuja. 
 
It stated that three young men who pretended to have come to withdraw money also were on queue with the plan to attack the man. 
 
“The victim raised an alarm which attracted nearby Police Patrol team to the scene. The hoodlums took to their heels upon sighting the advancing policemen. 
 
“One automatic pistol fell from one of the suspects and was recovered by the police and the victim was safely rescued. 
 
“However, another male victim was unlucky as hoodlums attacked him and snatched the N500,000 cash he withdrew from ATMs on July 28. 
 
“Police responded to his distress call and one of the suspects was arrested. Efforts is on to apprehend other gang members,’’ the statement said. (NAN)

The attack occurred at a parking area in the market.

The agency said on its twitter page that 11 others were wounded in the blast. 
 
But a police officer who works in the Explosives Ordnance Department said he counted eight bodies at the scene of the blast near Gamboru market in Maiduguri. 
 
He said the bomber, a male, arrived at the scene carrying a female passenger on a tricycle laden with explosives. 
 
“From the way his body was destroyed it showed that he was actually the suicide bomber and not the woman,” the police officer, who did not want to be named, told journalists. 
 
A source the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital confirmed to journalists they received five bodies and seven injured persons. 
 
A member of the Civilian-JTF, who identified himself as Kabiru, revealed that the phone that he helped in evacuating 10 corpses including that of the suicide bomber. 
 
“The corpses are about 10 in number that I took part in evacuating today; some are known and their relatives were contemplating taking them home for burial since they were obviously dead, some were taken to the mortuary,” he said. 
 
Gamboru market usually records a large turnout of traders and farmers. 
 
An official statement from the police was still expected. 
 
The explosion occurred at about 6. 30 a. m. 
 
Residents said a thunderous blast, which resonated all over Maiduguri, occurred near the entrance of Gamboru Market where operatives of commercial tricycles park to pick passengers. 
 
So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the bombing. 
 
But security operatives believe it has the imprint of the extremist Boko Haram sect.

Melaye in a statement entitled: “Stand Up For What You Believe In,” and issued on Friday in Abuja, said he has made sacrifices for the country and had survived assignation attempts. 
 
He said,” I was arrested 14 times in one year by the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan because I desire a country where my grandchildren (that I may never know) will dwell in and where life is already structured for them. I cannot throw away the sacrifice – when I was beaten and my clothes torn to shred on the floor of the House of Representatives because of my fight against corruption. 
 
“I have come too far to compromise my stand on corruption and corrupt persons. I make bold here to challenge anybody who will controvert the truth that I have never done any government contract, either at the local government, state or federal levels. It is not criminal to do so, but he who must come to equity must come with clean hands. I have made sacrifices to the extent of escaping assignations. Will my fellow citizens forget all these too quickly on the altar of loyalty to friends, family and loved ones? 
 
My loyalty to friends is not only when the going is good. I will be there even when the roads are rough. The invitation of Mrs. Toyin Saraki by the EFCC, however, is not a criminal indictment. I will not abandon my friend because of mere EFCC invitation. I also went there as a private investigator and an anti-corruption crusader to find out the extent of culpability of my sister and friend since she was not told the content of the petition against her before her appearance before the EFCC. 
 
“My definition for friendship is he or she who walks in when others are working out. If my father is invited by the EFCC, I will go there, if a prima face case is established against him, I will shout for his prosecution. So my great people, I have no regret following my friend and sister to the EFCC. If you are my friend, you are my friend. I cannot control what my friends will do, but they remain my friends. No fewer than 250, 000 infants die every year in Nigeria due to lack of unskilled health workers and antenatal care, Dr Elizabeth Disu, a consultant Paediatrician said on Friday in Lagos. 
 
Disu told the News Agency of Nigeria that new born deaths and child mortality was becoming rampant as Nigeria recorded the highest neonatal deaths in Africa.

The consultant with the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, highlighted poverty, poor education, lack of antenatal care and late presentation at the hospitals as major causes of infant deaths. 
 
Disu said, “Nigeria currently has the highest number of neonatal deaths in Africa with 37 per 1,000 live births. 
 
“Because of our huge population, we are losing over 250, 000 neonates every year and that is not to count still births. This is unacceptable and we need to address this problem. 
 
“We have to look at the underlining causes of these deaths, ranging from poverty to lack of antenatal care and not coming early to the hospital for delivery. 
 
“There are also root causes which include the kind of healthcare system that we have in place and government’s commitment to new born health.” 
 
Disu urged stakeholders, government and non-governmental organisations to organise training for health workers on the basic ways to recognise danger signs in infants to prevent complications and deaths. 
 
“We can address these issues by ensuring that we train and retrain the foot soldiers who are the primary healthcare workers at the grassroots. 
 
“We need to train them on basic evidence-based preventive measures of causes of child birth, like how to help babies breathe properly at birth. 
 
“That is one of the problems; some babies die at birth because they cannot initiate breathing on their own. 
 
“Teach them basic skills that will help babies to survive and how to recognise danger signs in infants. 
 
“If we can also educate mothers on the need to present cases early enough at the hospitals. 
 
“And if government is able to provide the needed facilities along with trained healthcare worker, we are on the way to reducing infant and child mortality in the country,” she said.

Jokotola said that the Nigerian Army should sustain the initiative arguing further that, “as retired gunner offices, we are available at all times to contribute in whatever way the corps send us fit to perform in the achievement of its organizational goals and indeed those of the Nigerian Army. 
 
“There is no gainsaying that that the challenges the military is currently facing are not unsurmountable if the old ideals of training, good administration and discipline address are extolled. 
 
“I therefore enjoin all gunners to rise to the occasion and do the nation proud by providing timely, accurate and effective for support for the Nigerian Army in its drive to meet up with its constitutional responsibilities at all times. 
 
“We all started the journey in the service of our fatherland as young men and grew up to become the retired generals that we are today.

OPEC Secretary-General, Abdallah el-Badri, said the organisation did not plan to reduce the quota. 
 
He made the comments after meeting with Russia’s energy minister in Moscow to discuss the influence of Iran increasing sales of oil following the removal of Western sanctions against that country. 
 
El-Badri called the removal of such sanctions a great achievement. 
 
Iran reached an agreement with the international community this month to remove sanctions imposed over concerns that its nuclear programme could be used for military purposes. 
 
Russia’s economy has drastically suffered from relatively low prices for oil, which have roughly halved since mid-2014. 
 
Russia’s Energy Minister, Alexander Novak, expressed optimism that oil prices would stabilise in 2016, with demand increasing by 7 to 10 per cent annually until about 2020 and then 15 to 20 per cent until about 2040

Following the arrest of the former Chief of Staff to governor Sullivan Chime, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission today took on the current Peoples Democratic Party chairman in the State, Ikeje Asogwa, over allegation of money laundering. 
 
Asogwa, who served as the Managing Director of the Enugu State Housing Corporation, is currently being interrogated by agents of the anti-graft agency in Abuja.

The suspect arrived the headquarters of EFCC in Abuja about10.30am July 31. He was still being interrogated as of press time. 
 
Impeccable sources at the anti-graft agency disclosed that Asogwa’s invitation followed the discovery that Enugu state funds was moved through him ostensibly for housing development but with no trace of the houses as the funds are believed to have been diverted. 
 
His interrogation come a day after Ifeoma Nwobodo, Chime’s ex- Chief of Staff, was grilled for alleged money laundering and misappropriation of funds. She is still in the custody of the agency.

I didn't vote for President Muhammadu Buhari in the last election, though I know that Nigeria needed change. I just disagreed with the change agent due to reasons I have explained in various write-ups in the lead up to the election. I didn’t vote for Jonathan either; the PDP as was constituted and operated just wasn’t a Party I could even consider for anything. In the end, I voted for one of the lesser known Parties. 
 
But Buhari it is. The majority vote will always prevail and that is respected here without any equivocation. So we move on.

As we move on however, it is becoming a struggle not to be uncomfortable in the way things have unfolded and in the way they are playing out. Some of the reservations expressed by some of us are now rearing their ugly heads. Contrary to his inauguration speech, and contrary to reasonable, logical expectations, Buhari hasn’t put a fully functional government in place. This is already the end of July. 
 
As we say around here, nothing spoil. The only harm I saw were incompetent governors (who are unable to manage quite sizable resources) dancing around the President, taking advantage, and getting off easy. The mound of flip flops and reversal of official pronouncements have only meant a slight loss of face; nothing major. 
 
However, I began to panic when I read a news report that Buhari has approved an exchange rate of N160 to $1 for Christian pilgrims. This report was publicised widely and with plenty of fanfare. 
To me, it is another indication that the President sorely needs all the help he can get. He needs technical advisers and a seasoned cabinet like a fish needs water. 
 
But the President has already and unwittingly set up his eventual Ministers for failure. They can’t win. Expectations are just too high now. Ministers would still have to be Nigerians, working in Nigeria. The current perception is that Buhari is searching for the best of the very best – folks with no blemishes at all but blessed with superpowers. Optimal performance bothering on miracles would be expected from these Ministers and other appointed government functionaries. How could anyone go into a job like that? It is unrealistic and quite unfair. 
 
All the same, I am becoming increasingly convinced that the President created this governance lacuna in order for him to have unfettered, unchallenged (dictatorial, if you will) shot at managing the country for a while before Ministers, Advisers and other technical and legal people are brought in and begin to rein-in some of his more impulsive and autocratic tendencies. 
 
It seems to me that Buhari wants to get in a few military-style diktats, strong-arm a few people before settling down to normal democratic governance. Because, so far, the only things on the table are hunting down people, dire innuendos and promises of persecution. 
 
As has been whispered all along, the President has finally confirmed that he intends to probe just Jonathan’s government. It is only that government that is corrupt in Nigeria’s recent history. Obasanjo is living large. The bribes from the Halliburton scandal are the major stakeholders in Nigeria’s present day change project. Even the scions of Abacha are running loose, obscenely flaunting stolen wealth. No problem with that. No investigations. Now tell me; how are certain sections of this country supposed to feel? Does this not seem like the start of marginalization and dehumanisation of the usual suspects all over again? 
 
Even Madam Patience Jonathan was comprehensively humiliated at Port Harcourt airport last week when she attempted to use the VIP waiting area. She was refused access by security personnel citing “orders from Abuja.” How petty! If a former First Lady cannot use an airport’s VIP lounge, who should? I suppose Rotimi Amaechi is using his APC mates to exact revenge. Anyway, there is God o! 
The inclusiveness that was pervasive in the last four years is fast dissipating. Perhaps, someone needs to remind the President that we are in a thriving democracy. The opposition and opposing voices are not supposed to be treated like conquered prisoners of war, or like burnt offerings. 
 
Which brings me back to the issue of the pilgrims’ exchange rate. 
 
I could have sworn that I heard candidate Buhari campaign that he would scrap government’s participation in, and subsidy of religious pilgrimages. But he has only gone and directed that pilgrims should exchange N160 to the dollar. 
 
What this means is that a pilgrim with N400,000 who would have received $1,740 at the normal exchange rate will now get $2,500 under the Buhari plan. The government will cough up the difference. 
 
Last year, about 14,000 Christians made one form of pilgrimage to one place or the other. 76,000 Muslims went to Mecca. If we do the math, the government is going to end up subsidising around a further $68 million or N13.6 billion on top of whatever is already subsidised for these pilgrimages. 
Can you see why the President needs ministers and other technical people like yesterday? 
 
Furthermore, a pilgrim with N500,000 would get $3,125. In theory, this person could turn around and sell back dollars on the black market and make a profit of $1,000 or N237,000. Now, an…emm…shall we say, enterprising Pilgrims Board official can fund 100 people into this scheme and he is looking at a cool N23,700,000 million per pilgrimage cycle. The Christians alone run four pilgrimages in one year! Heavens only know what they are looking for. 
 
Please, please, we do not desire on a national scale a situation like that which currently exist in Osun State. The struggling governor of that State, Arigbesola, who has not been able to pay workers salaries in like forever somehow manages to find money every year to pay for Osun citizens transportation during sundry religious holidays; no audits, no questions asked.

The All Progressives Congress has insisted that the Director-General of Directorate of State Services, Mr. Lawal Daura, is not a card-carrying member of the party. 
 
It says “nothing short of producing Mr. Daura’s membership card or evidence of his membership registration will convince discerning Nigerians” that the DSS boss is a member of the APC as alleged by the Peoples Democratic Party.

The party said in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in Lagos on Friday that PDP’s ‘evidence’ of a photograph of Daura in a pre-election group picture with President Muhammdu Buhari had weakened the opposition party ‘s argument. 
 
APC added, ”While it amounts to rabble-rousing and crass politicking for the PDP to have wrongly accused Mr. Daura of being a member of the APC without a scintilla of credible evidence, the PDP has weakened its argument by using the pictures in which Mr. Daura appeared with the President and the fact that he served in an election committee as evidence of his membership of the APC. 
 
”Possession of an APC membership card by Mr. Daura or evidence of registration as a party member at his ward, local government or state will be the only conclusive evidence of his membership of the party. 
 
”Until such an evidence is produced, we are sorry we have to tell the PDP to shut up!” 
 
APC believed that the PDP was jittery because it was keenly aware of the kind of impunity it perpetrated during its time as the ruling party at the centre from 1999 to 2015. 
 
It added, ”PDP has forgotten the saying that he who must come to equity must come with clean hands. When Mr. Mike Okiro chaired the security committee of the PDP campaign in 2011, did that prevent him from being 
appointed the Chair of the Police Service Commission, which is responsible for issues concerning the welfare, promotion and discipline of all police personnel, in 2013? 
 
”When the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency, Mr. Mike Omeri, was appointed into the Jonathan election committee in 2015, did he resign his appointment as head of the agency or did he automatically become a card-carrying member of the PDP? 
 
”Did retired Col. Kayode Are not become the DG of the DSS despite being a close confidante of Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo during his ex-President’s campaign to become President? Was this not under a PDP Federal Government? 
 
”In any case, even in the world’s most advance democracy, United States, was a card-carrying Democrat, Mr. Leon Panetta, not named as head of the Central Intelligence Agency by President Barack Obama in 2009? Here in Nigeria, the APC-led FG has not even gone that far, and the PDP is blabbing. 
 
”It is an irony that the APC-led Federal Government, which has continued to conduct the affairs of state with a strict adherence to the law, is the one being accused by the immoral, irresponsible and grossly hypocritical PDP, a party that should cover its face in shame for wasting all of 16 years in the life of our country; a party whose members should show penance by hunkering down, has continued to assault the sensibilities of a decent nation. The African Diplomatic Group has condemned the terror attacks carried out by the Boko Haram sect in parts of the country. 
 
The diplomats also called on the Federal Government to expedite action for the rescue or release of the abducted Chibok school girls even as they commiserated with the government of Nigeria, the families of the kidnapped girls and other victims of the terrorists’ attacks.

The ambassador of Shaharawi Arab Republic to Nigeria and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Oubi Bachir said this on Friday during the Africa and Mandela Day celebrations in Abuja. 
 
Bachir said, “The Africa Diplomatic Group condemns all threats to the progress of Africa, including Boko Haram terror attacks that have taken the lives of hundreds of innocent Nigerians, and families of the victims for loss of their loved ones. 
 
“The group calls for the unconditional release of the over 200 girls, who were kidnapped in chibok, Borno State, on April 14, 2014. 
 
“Africa is committed to garner all the necessary resources to support Nigeria in its quest to combat terrorism.” 
 
The envoy noted that Africa had come a long way since the formation of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963, which later changed to African Union in 2002, adding that the continent, despite its challenges had made tremendous strides in peace and development. 
 
He said the United Nations General Assembly on July 18, 2009 launched Nelson Mandela International Day in recognition of the birth anniversary of the iconic late President of the Republic of South Africa for his immense contribution to the liberation of his country and humanity in general. 
 
The High Commissioner of South Africa to Nigeria, Lulu Mnguni, who paid tributes to Mandela, called on all well-meaning individuals to emulate the iconic virtues of the late former South African president. 
 
In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Bulus Lolo called on Africa to unite and collaborate in the fight against terror and insurgency.

National Secretary of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and former Minister of Information, Labaran Maku on Friday refuted the allegations that N37bn was found in his farm saying the statement is completely false and part of an ongoing effort to blackmail his office. 
 
The former minister , who made the clarification on his Twitter account @Makumaku2015 said the blackmail started after he challenged Nassarawa State Governor, Tanko Almakura to account for the allocations he collected from the state treasury as security votes.

Tragedy struck on Friday morning in the Mechanic Village area of Oke Afa, Isolo, Lagos, when a midnight fire ravaged some shops, burning three sisters to death in the process. 
 
It was 
<a name='more' id="more"></a>learnt that the three sisters of the same family, whose names had yet to be known, were aged 5,7, and 12 years old. 
 
It was gathered that their guardian reportedly locked them in a shop before the fire incident. 
 
Their corpses were said to have been removed by policemen from the Ejigbo division. 
 
Two fire trucks from Isolo and Ikotun branches of the Lagos State Fire Service were seen at the scene to put out the fire. 
 
The Director of the service, Dr. Razak Fadipe, who confirmed the incident, said efforts were on to curtail the fire.

A female suicide bomber blew herself up Friday at a big market in the northeast Nigerian city of Maiduguri, a vigilante and a witness said. 
 
“There had been a suicide attack on Gamboru market this morning. It was a female suicide bomber. The attack happened around 6:30 am (0530 GMT) as the grocers were arriving in the market which starts early,” said the vigilante, Babakura Kolo. 
 
There is no immediate information on the number of victims, although witness accounts suggest that there have been casualties. 
 
“From accounts we gathered from people around, the woman arrived on a taxi tricycle, as every woman grocer does. She blew herself up as soon as the tricycle stopped in the midst of other tricycles that were dropping traders off,” Kolo told AFP. 
 
A witness, who declined to be named, corroborated this account. 
 
“I was at home when I heard a loud explosion that sent me rushing out of my house. It was coming from the Gamboru market. I went there, but from afar. The place was littered with victims and burning rickshaws,” the source told AFP. 
 
The Gamboru market is the second largest in Maiduguri, capital of Borno state. 
 
A “mentally handicapped” female suicide bomber killed at least 14 people and injured 47 more last Sunday at a crowded market Damaturu, capital of neighbouring Yobe state. 
 
Damaturu was also the scene of a triple suicide bombing on July 18 when three girls blew themselves up killing at least 13 people as residents prepared for the Eid festival marking the end of Ramadan.

 A 32-year-old man, Tuesday in Yenagoa, committed suicide after drinking an insecticide, known as Sniper, after he learned that his wife was having an extra-marital affair at Ikolo in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. 
 
The deceased, identified as Amatari Christmas, was married to Tombara, an indigene of Ayama in the same local government area. They have two children.

It was gathered that the incident has provoked anger among indigenes of the community, with some kinsmen of the deceased threatening to invoke their ancestors to deal with the unfaithful woman and her lover, identified as a suspected cultist and an indigene of Ayama. 
 
A kinsman of the deceased, who gave his name as Francis, said their late brother, on getting wind of claims of infidelity against his wife, decided to monitor her activities in the community. 
 
Francis said: “On Monday, the husband went to fetch vegetable in large quantities for his wife to sell. After harvesting the vegetable, the husband told the wife to return home after market to prepare dinner for the family. 
 
“However, the dead husband became worried and suspicious at about 7p.m. when the wife did not return as instructed and went in search of her at his in-law’s house. 
 
“At the mother in-law’s house, he was told she had gone to the father’s place at Ayama. At Ayama, a concerned friend took him to the home of his wife’s lover, where he caught them in bed.” 
 
According to him, the wife’s lover, a suspected cultist in the area, had threatened to deal with the aggrieved husband who for fear of his life, hid himself in an uncompleted building before going home to drink the deadly substance after locking out his two children. 
 
When contacted on the development, the spokesman of the state Police Command, Asinim Butswatt, said he was yet to be briefed on the incident.
