Henry Okah, brother of jailed leader of the Movement For The Emancipation of Niger Delta Charles Okah has escaped from Kuje Prison in Abuja.

A prison inmate told Saharareporters that Okah, who had been on trial in Abuja for the 2010 Independence Day bombing that killed 27 people, escaped last night by simply scaling the prison walls of the prison around 7:30 PM Nigerian time. 
 
He was reportedly in the company on another prison inmate. 
 
A massive manhunt has commenced to find and rearrest him.

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers has blamed incessant tanker accidents in the country to the poor condition of the nation’s roads.

The union said this in Port Harcourt during a one-day training it organised for tanker drivers, tagged, ‘Safe Driving, Accident Effects and Prevention’. 
 
Speaking, the National President of NUPENG, who doubles as the Deputy President of Nigerian Labour Congress, Mr. Igwe Achese, said that most of the tanker accidents were caused by pot holes and gullies that had been left unaddressed. 
 
He, however, enjoined tanker drivers to change their attitudes on the usage of the roads. 
 
“You are all aware we have had series of issues about accidents that involve our trucks. When such accidents occur, sometimes, the impact leads to loss of lives and property. 
 
“So, we decided to ask ourselves questions too on what are the causes of these accidents. So we decided to have driving training for our drivers. 
 
“The nature of our roads is a real contributory factor to tanker accidents which we are experiencing. It is unfortunate that we are expecting change to have effect on our roads, but that has not been realised and this is over one year. 
 
“We are still confident that change will come, but it should have impact on the road infrastructure. We are also happy that the budget has been approved; its implementation is what we are watching and how it is going to have impact on the roads which we use daily.”

A lecturer in the Theatre Arts Department of the College of Education Oju in Benue state, Godwin Abuul, has been allegedly murdered by his wife, name withheld, in connivance with her siblings over alleged extra marital affairs.

According to Vanguard, Abuul who went missing about two weeks ago in Gboko was killed by his murderers who also dumped his remains in River Katsina/Ala. 
 
A family source who craved anonymity explained that the deceased two weeks ago went missing in Gboko after returning from Oju where he lectured at the state owned College of Education. 
 
Narrating the story he said, “Goddy used to lecture at the College of Education in Oju. He travels weekly from here in Gboko to Oju to lecture after which he returns to Gboko to spend his weekend with his wife and two children. 
 
“Unfortunately, two weeks ago he returned from Oju and said he was traveling to Katsina/Ala on a private visit that was the last we heard of him. 
 
“His disappearance was reported to the Police who since then have been combing the entire state in search of his whereabouts. 
 
“Luckily, just two days ago, the cloth he wore the last day anybody saw him was found with a young man who was immediately arrested by the Police in Gboko. 
 
“Upon interrogation the young man confessed to the Police how the missing lecturer was allegedly killed by his wife in connivance with her siblings. 
 
His confession triggered the arrest of several persons including the wife of the deceased and mother of his two children and all those mentioned in the saga, by the Police in Gboko, though the matter has been transferred to the Command Headquarters in Makurdi for further investigations. 
 
Continuing, the source said, “already his wife has confessed all she new about the matter to the Police. We learned that she alleged that her brothers beat her husband up because he was involved in extra marital affairs, but not with the intention to kill him. 
 
“After killing him, they allegedly dumped his body in River Katsina/Ala and also went ahead to sell his Honda car to an innocent buyer for the sum of N650,000 and of that sum, the wife of the murdered lecturer was given the sum of N400, 000 as her share of the proceed.” 
 
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Assistant Superintendent, ASP, Moses Yamu who confirmed the incident said he was yet to get full details of the matter.

Renowned Professor of Political Economy, Pat Utomi, has reacted to the exit of the United Kingdom from European Union saying decision will have a far reaching effect on Nigeria and Africa.

The UK voted to leave EU in a close-margin referendum which saw 48 percent vote to stay and 52 prefer to leave. 
 
Reacting to this, Utomi said that the referendum might ignite similar self-determination spirit in other parts of the world especially, Africa. 
 
“I have a feeling that this is a new dawn for plebiscite or referendum democracy. People are going to be asking why they should be in any union. It could be Sierra Leone, it could be Nigeria. They will call for their own referendum. Culture, trends and patterns tend to take on a global dimension. 
 
“We have arrived at the age of self-determination. Making people stay in a union that they don’t like is now the equivalent of slavery in the modern age. It may get to the extent that many of the concocted states of West Africa that came out of the Berlin Conference, will begin to unravel. It has huge implication,” Prof Utomi said. 
 
He added that there might not be any change in immigration situation in Britain since the nation was already tough on immigration. 
 
But he believes the EU will seek to build new trade partnerships while Britain will make efforts to cement old trade alliances with countries like Nigeria.

An armed robbery suspect, Chris Oboko, a corporal attached to the C4I unit of the Nigeria Police in Rivers State, has revealed how an informant “lured” him into a gang of car snatchers.

Thirty five-year-old Oboko, who has now been dismissed from the force, was recently arrested in Port Harcourt, during a mop-up of criminal elements responsible for incessant robberies and carjacking in the state by the Inspector-General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team. 
 
Oboko, who joined the force in 2003 said he was living at the police barracks on Iche Street, Borokiri, Port Harcourt, while ‘moonlighting’ as a robber. 
He said in his statement, “In 2015, I met Johnpaul Amandi, one of our informants when he took two vehicles he stole from one of his kidnapping victims to one Victor Nwogu to sell. I met them while they were negotiating the price and I told them I would join their operation. 
 
“After I became a member, I always found a way to get the members of the gang released whenever they were arrested by the police. I am even the resident Pastor of Battle Axe Assembly Church at Chuba Allo in Port Harcourt. I know this business is evil and shouldn’t have joined but I could not resist the temptation.” 
 
The police have said efforts are on to arrest other members of the gang, while Oboko would be charged with armed robbery soon.

The Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), Gospel Church Tudun Nupawa, Kaduna South local government, Kaduna State Thursday donated assorted foodstuff to Muslims within its domain as part of efforts to ensure religious and peaceful coexistence.

The church presented the gift to cushion the present hardship people are going through and as a way of associating with them in the spirit of the holy month of Ramadan. 
 
The beneficiaries from the Panteka union and the Tudun Nupawa communities which host the Church were given rice, beans, maize, indomie, Millet among others. 
 
The senior Pastor of the Church, Reverend Yunusa S. Nmadu said, “The gesture by the Church to provide food items to members of the host community during Ramadan is to demonstrate the Biblical injunction that we should love our neighbours as ourselves.” 
 
He said that it was important for the church to positively impart the lives of the people of the community as the only way to practicalized the command of God from the Bible. 
 
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, the Sarkin Dutse, Alhaji Shaibu Balarabe commended the understanding of the ECWA by consistently assisting his people during the Ramadan fast in the past three years, adding that he inherited the protection of the Church from his late father.

Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola SAN, Thursday in Lagos advised industrialists, directors and other employers of labour in the country not to panic or downsize their staff in the face of current power supply challenges saying the Federal Government has put a roadmap in place that would ensure progressive power supply from incremental to steady and then uninterrupted power supply nationwide.

Speaking at two major events – the Quarterly Business Luncheon of the Institute of Directors (IOD) and the 13th Distinguished Electrical and Electronics Engineers Annual Lecture, Fashola, who was Guest Speaker at the IOD Business Luncheon, underscored his optimism that the current challenges facing the power sector would be over soon, saying the present administration was committed to ensuring a sustainable power supply in the country. 
 
The Minister, who was also Guest of Honour at the Distinguished Electrical and Electronic Engineers Annual Lecture of the Nigerian Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE), told the industrialists, entrepreneurs, directors and other employers of Labour in the Organised Private Sector not to panic by downsizing, shutting down or laying off their staff saying that the nation would overcome the challenges of unsteady power supply just as it had overcome other critical national challenges. 
 
Establishing the context within which to analyse the current situation in the power sector, Fashola traced the evolution of the country’s electricity industry to the 1950s when the nation’s electricity was managed by the Electricity Corporation of Nigeria (ECN) which later gave way to the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) which finally handed over to the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) saying that in all those transitions, the generation, transmission and distribution of power was in the hands of the government which also issued meters. 
 
Noting that he inherited a privatised power sector where majority shares of the sector was sold to private companies, Fashola said the majority share was sold in 2013, 63 years after, when government unbundled the PHCN and sold the generation, and distribution processes to private companies adding that government only retained the transmission aspect of power which it manages through the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). 
 
Government, the Minister said, also created regulatory agencies like the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trader (NBET) the Nigerian Electricity Management and Safety Agency (NEMSA) and the Nigerian Electricity Liability Management Company (NELMCO) adding that by unbundling the PHCN into 18 companies, government stopped producing and distributing power as well as issuing meters. 
 
He added, “Therefore the power sector I inherited is one that the role of government is reduced to policy and regulation” adding that the functions of generation and distribution were now carried out by the Generation Companies (GenCos) and the Distribution Companies (DisCos) which also have the function of issuing meters. 
 
Noting that the power sector would have been in transition for three years in November this year out of which the present administration has spent one year and he would have spent seven months as Minister, Fashola asked, “The context, therefore, is, between 1950 and 2013 what did we achieve in power?” pointing out that in all that time, only 4,000MW was generated while not all consumers were metered out of the six million known consumers. 
 
“What is reasonable to expect within three years of privatization and one year of a new government in respect of a problem that could not be solved in 63 years?”, he asked, adding, “It is in this context that we can discuss my role as policy maker, regulatory supervisor and enabler for the private sector-led electricity market”. 
 
Noting that the real problem in the sector was lack of sufficient electricity, Fashola, who recalled that the highest generation capacity, achieved only in February this year, was 5074MW for a country of no less than 150 million people as against Chad and Liberia with 84MW and 40MW electricity demands respectively, said the solution to insufficient power was to get more power adding, “This is the basis for leg one of our roadmap- Incremental Power”. 
 
Elucidating further on the plan to produce sufficient power, Fashola listed the various power projects being undertaken across the country, some of which have either been completed and working or are in advanced stages of completion, to include repair of gas turbines, strengthening transmission to evacuate power and the National Independent Power Project (NIPP), Gbarain which, according to him, has now been completed and is being tested. 
 
Other power sources targeted to increase power supply, according to him, also include expanding Qua Iboe, completing Kaduna Power Plant with generation capacity of 215MW, Kasimbilla with 40MW, Dadin Kowa with 39MW, Azura with 300MW, Zungeru 700MW and Gurara 30MW, adding that other sources besides gas powered plants include Zuma Coal, Mambilla Hydro with 1,200MW and Solar which, according to him, is targeted for rural electrification and universities, small hydro-dams as well as some uncompleted constituency projects and embedded generation such as Parias Power. 
 
To achieve Steady Power, Fashola, who recommended a full audit of consumers in the country, which, according to him, could best be done through a comprehensive national census exercise, said it would be impossible to provide steady power supply without a data on the number of people requiring the utility. The Minister added that such an audit would help to bring all consumers into the metering net so as to make them pay for what they consume adding that this would boost the finances of the power generating and distribution companies to deliver more power and for maintenance of power facilities. The Minister said the prospect of achieving uninterrupted power lay in the maintenance of sustained growth in the sector to match population increase, energy conservation in homes and offices, energy preservation and conservation of water and loss reduction. 
 
He, however, noted that even if all the other variables were met, the hope of steady and uninterrupted power supply could only be assured if the challenges facing the sector were solved some of which he said include, the management of the expectation of the people to have power immediately after privatization because of the impression created that this would happen immediately after, agitations by various aggrieved groups that sometimes lead to attacks on power assets, vandalism of power assets, power theft and problems of payment of bills which include assaults on collectors. 
 
Stressing the importance of conservation in achieving uninterrupted power at the 13th DEEEAL Lecture which he earlier attended, Fashola said at every phase of the roadmap conservation of energy was vital “because whatever is wasted will never be enough” adding that getting incremental power and then steady and uninterrupted power would require that what would be generated would not be wasted. 
 
The Minister, who recalled that the nation achieved 5,074MW of electricity for the first time this year declared, “Energy efficiency is critical at all stages even when we are trying to get incremental power at this stage when we have the capacity to produce about 5,000MW, assuming we have no gas issues”, adding, “That 5,000MW can serve more than the people which it is currently serving if we conserve it”.

“This is not a mere threat. The only way out is for the Federal Government to relocate all headquarters of major oil companies to Niger Delta. They are built with our oil money. They must be moved back to the Niger Delta region.” 
“If the federal government fails before the said day, we shall surely carry out the attack. The companies which headquarters we want back now include; Chevron,Agip and Shell which has their headquarters in Lagos.” 
 
“In addition, the federal government should move all refineries to the Niger Delta. This is without further delay as we shall meet further delay with corresponding colossal damage in the mentioned places on the said date.” 
 
“We wants to tell President Buhari that now that the going is getting tough, the tough has to get going,” it says.

The Spanish Government on Friday deported 11 Nigerians alleged to have committed various offences in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that their deportation came less than 48 hours after United States deported 41 Nigerians for similar reasons. 
 
NAN reports that the deportees, comprising 10 males and one female, arrived at the Hajj Camp area of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos at 7:10pm. 
 
They were received by officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the Lagos Airport Police Command. 
 
The spokesperson of the command, DSP Joseph Alabi, confirmed the deportation to NAN. 
 
According to him, they were deported for allegedly committing immigration-related offences and other criminal acts in their host country.

 On our way home on Friday morning at about 12:45am from supporting DJ Obi at his 10-day attempt to beat world record with two of my friends, we stopped to get Sharwama at Maroccaine Restaurant (a popular 24-hr restaurant in Victoria Island). On our way out, we approached a police stop with three fully armed police officers at Ligali Ayorinde and turned on our inner lights and my friend driving wound down so they can see we were all harmless girls. 
 
Immediately he started accusing her of holding something in her hand, aggressively questioning “what is in your hand?!”. She shows him her empty hands and he goes on to say that he must search the boot and demands we come out of the car. I came out of the car to check this boot with him, he inspected, found nothing and before I closed the boot he quickly walked towards the passenger’s door I had left opened and grabbed my friend’s bag. 
 She asked him severally to return the bag, and we all started saying “give us the bag!” and then he began to rain insults on us, yelling “What’s in this bag? There is an ‘exhibit’ in this bag! I must search this bag!” while continuously flashing his flash light directly in our eyes like we were criminals. This did not even allow us to see his name or his badge so we know how to address him.  
 Bear in mind we were just 3 girls and officer 2 & 3 stood there doing nothing like they were waiting for other cars to harass. So I picked up my phone to call for help and before I knew it, he forcefully snatched my phone from hand leaving us in shock, fear and we frantically started shouting “give us our phone and bag back!” and even trying to get the attention of the few passerbys incase anyone could help. Insults fly as things get heated up, he threatens us multiple times that he will use his belt on us and then I managed to grab my friend’s bag, but my phone remained in his possession. 
 He started insulting my parents, “God punish your mother and father! Your father is an idiot!”. He called us stupid, indisciplined etc. repeating himself “Am I your mate?”. I scream “you are holding my property! Give me my phone! This is stealing! The police are stealing!” and that was when he released his grip of my phone and I started walking back to the car. He chased me and started pushing me and slammed my body against the car. Thank God my door was still open I jumped in, locked the door and my friend zoomed off. 
 As we drove off I felt a sharp pain, realised I was bleeding on my right hand and three of my nails had been broken. How can a police officer assault me like this? This is gross misuse of power and brutality.

 We called Police Control, Rapid Response Service (RRS) and the emergency switchboard (112) who forwarded my number to another unit. They weren’t helpful at all, instead asked us what we expect them to do and were frankly not concerned. Someone from RRS advised I go home and call back at 7am. The emergency switch board told me they would forward my details and we should expect a call back… Till now, no call back. 
 This has opened my eyes to the fact that WE ARE NOT SAFE IN NIGERIA!!! 
 THERE IS NOTHING LIKE EMERGENCY RESPONSE. 
 Think about it… If I were being brutally raped, robbed or attacked and I called our so called ’emergency service’, nobody would show up. It’s a sobering thought to think that; 
 The ones who should be protecting you are the ones to really be afraid of 
If something horrible happens, there’s no calvary, there’s no red and blue sirens coming to your aid… YOU’RE ON YOUR OWN!

Barely six days after some suspected militants killed 15 persons in Imushin community in Ogijo area of Ogun  state,  another 50 people were feared dead on Thursday night when militants swooped on the  neighbouring communities in Elepete and Igbo Olomu,  the borderline communities in Lagos/Ogun State.

Saturday Vanguard gathered that a large number of the victims  were said to be landlords in the area, who were reported to be keeping security watch over the communities, due to incessant armed robbery attacks. 
 
A source who was a landlord but pleaded anonymity said his colleagues landlords made bonfires in strategic points with a view to checking incessant attacks by robbers. But, tragedy struck when  the militants who were coming from where they had gone to perpetrate their illegal business, mistook the landlords for law enforcement agents and went on a shooting spree. 
 
The source said that 30 dead bodies have been accounted for from various points, and that many residents have fled the communities for safety. Most residents who spoke with our correspondent lamented that the militants had threatened to attack the communities on  reprisal attacks  over the death of their colleagues few weeks ago. 
 
The residents have therefore blamed security operatives  for alleged negligence resulting to loss of  lives of residents and landlords. One for the residents who spoke with Saturday Vanguard said  that only the Nigerian Army, the Navy and the Airforce could tackle the menace of these criminals. 
 
“The militants came out from the creek and attacked the communities around 11p.m on Thursday night. 
 
We were outside keeping vigil over incessant armed robbery attacks. We had bonfires in some areas and the militants, having sighted the bonfires,  opened fire on anyone on sight. 
 
“The whole communities have already been deserted. We need the presence of the Nigerian Army, Airforce and Navy to curtail the excesses of these militants,” he said. 
 
Another  source told  Saturday Vanguard that since the first attack which led to death of 15 persons in the communities, schools in the areas have been closed down while business activities were paralyzed. 
 
The source who spoke with our correspondent  on condition of anonymity said residents of the affected communities are fleeing their houses and that the whole areas were already deserted. 
 
However, the  Ogun State Police Command said only two people were killed by suspected militants who have been laying siege on the community. 
 
The command’s image maker, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, while speaking with our correspondent  said only two people were killed by the militants. He said that the militants came from the creek to attack innocent residents and fled back. Adejobi, a Superintendent of Police, said the Police would try and fish out the criminals. 
 
“Two have been confirmed dead. The militants came again and attacked the community. They came yesterday and attacked and went back to the creeks. We will only continue to try,” he said.

Members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, have stated that they support their fellow freedom fighters, the Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, describing them as their greatest allies.

While expressing their unflinching support for the Avengers, who they said were fighting for the freedom of the people of Biafra,‎ they noted, “We want to place it on record that IPOB under the leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has no connection with those groups who are criticizing the avengers, a group that is calling for the release of Kanu, the detained IPOB leader”. 
 
In a statement jointly signed by their Spokesmen, Emma Nmezu and Dr. Clifford Iroanya and made available yesterday, the group warned that should the Nigerian government send its troops to the oil-rich Niger Delta land to fight the Avengers again, as intelligence report was suggesting, it would direct its members to join hands with the Avengers and engage the troops head-on. 
 
IPOB said it was making a reference to a particular group and their leader, who they alleged had been bribed with oil blocks allocations in the oil-rich areas of Biafraland. 
 
The IPOB further accused the said compromised group of having started the ugly incidence of kidnapping in Biafraland, adding that their members were often used as thugs and hired killers for politicians in Nigeria. 
 
The group recalled that the Avengers had consistently made the release of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu as a precondition for any discussion with Nigeria. 
 
It added that it was quite unfortunate and disgraceful that the “incompetent and intellectually challenged Nigerian Government” had turned its deaf ear to this demand, while magnifying the notion of amnesty payments and resource control as reasons for the NDA‘s actions. 
 
The statement reads, “For the avoidance of doubt, the Avengers are fighting for the freedom of the people of Biafra and not for amnesty payment or for resource control as some commentators would like to believe. 
 
“When Biafra is finally liberated from the bondage called Nigeria, resources shall be controlled by the owners of the land where those resources are located. 
 
“The perennially incompetent Nigerian Government should stop deceiving the entire world into believing that what the freedom fighters of Avengers are demanding is resource control. 
 
“Amnesty is associated with criminality and a people who are fighting for their freedom should not be unjustly termed criminals. 
 
“The notion and talk of amnesty for our own freedom fighters (the Avengers or NDA) is a misnomer and should be taken out of any discourse. 
 
“On the contrary, amnesty should be granted to the Nigerian Government, especially to those from the criminal class masquerading as elites who unjustly appropriated oil and gas wells and other resources in Biafra land to themselves and their cohorts to the detriment of the masses. 
 
“These robbers should be associated with amnesty for their economic criminality not the Avengers. 
 
“Ironically, most of the leaders of the compromised groups are speaking against the great work that the NDA are doing. 
 
“These shameless scavenging Hausa-Fulani sponsored slaves in Biafraland have placed the needs of their stomach and their families above the overall national interest of the liberation of their people who are under the enslavement of the Nigerian Government in concert with the British Government who have never supported the liberation of any christian country in the world. 
 
“We reiterate that IPOB is totally and absolutely in support of the NDA as they march towards the unconditional liberation of our people from the evil grip of Nigerian Government. 
 
“We plead with the Avengers not to be discouraged by the comments and antics of these so-called leaders of these compromised groups and some other charlatans who parade themselves as freedom fighters. 
 
“The Avengers should know that the only ally they have now is IPOB under the leadership of Nnamdi Kanu. 
 
“IPOB is warning the extremist Nigerian Government of Buhari that should they invade any part of Biafraland, as intelligence report indicate they are planning to, then IPOB will order every youth in Biafraland to join the Avengers to defend Biafra land.”

The Archbishop of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province (Anglican Communion), Most Revd Emmanuel Chukwuma on Friday accused President Muhammadu Buhari of being insensitive to sufferings of the masses.

Chukwuma, who was delivering his address at the sixteenth Synod of Enugu Diocese held at the Church of Resurrection Power, New haven, Enugu, equally declared that Buhari was running a “corrupt administration.” 
 
While condemning the President’s leadership style, he said it was sad that Buhari, who brags about anti corruption, had taken delight in plunging the people he was elected to serve into hardship and suffering through his policies and programmes. 
 
“It is corruption on your part if you increased prices of almost every thing without palliatives to the people. 
 
“There is hunger in the land, the people are complaining and crying and the one elected to serve us is enjoying his life at Aso Rock. That means he is corrupt. He did not increase salary, he did not promote workers. 
 
“The other day, he addressed workers at Aso rock, he did not talk about their welfare but only asked them to shun corruption. How can somebody who is hungry shun corruption? I think there is a limit to what people can take. I advise him to be careful so as to avoid people taking laws into their hands”, he stated. 
 
He maintained that the federal government should reduce interest in the fight against corruption and introduce policies and programmes that would impact on the well being of the people. 
 
Speaking on the increased militancy, terrorism and civil unrests, Chukwuma warned that the situation was bound to increase with the alleged government’s silence to the plight of Nigerians. 
 
He said, “Today, there is no electricity anywhere, shops and businesses are closing by the day due to high prices of goods and services. Petrol is not affordable, like wise kerosene and cooking gas. 
 
“It will appear that there is no leadership. All the promises made by the APC upon which the people voted them in have fallen apart. We cannot continue like this. We need to give the people some measure of hope and show them that government is concerned by the situation of things”. 
 
Calling for restraint in the bombing of oil facilities by the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), he stated that time had come for justice to prevail in the entire thing by paying adequate attention to the plight of the people of the area. 
 
He said: “Only a leadership that is totally committed to justice and a properly structured Nigeria can solve the identity, resource ownership and other crisis of development in Nigeria. 
 
“While the provision of the infrastructure and sustainable development is important, there can be no enduring peace in the area or any part of Nigeria, for that matter, if injustice to the people of the Niger Delta is not comprehensively addressed. Specifically, a truthful commitment to the principle and practice of federalism is what can bring peace and prosperity to Nigeria. 
 
“It is high time government took a total look at the plight of the people, feel their pains and redress the situation of the long suffering majority who has not been the real beneficiaries of the token tagged Amnesty programme. 
 
“While the programme has made some militant rich, it has not addressed the huge infrastructure challenges and poverty in the area”. 
 
Continuing, Chukwuma said that the renewed militancy and terrorism had further crippled the economy, stressing that immediate, medium and long term solutions should be found to the problems.

According to The Nation, a passing out ceremony was organised for the retirees at the Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre (NAFRC) in Oshodi, Lagos. 
 
Mohammed Dan-Ali, minister of defence, urged them to collaborate with those still in service to contain the insecurity in the country. 
 
Represented by Iro Ikenga, a director army in the ministry of defence, Dan-Ali advised them to put to good use, the skills they have acquired in the six months they have undergone training at NAFRC. 
 
“You all know that the issue of security of our country in recent times is at its critical stage, as the military is now contending with insurgents in the north-east,” he said. 
 
“As retiring members of the armed forces, a lot is still required of you wherever you find yourselves in the aspect of collaborations with serving members of the armed forces. 
 
“You might also be required to collaborate with other security agencies of our father land to completely eradicate this threat of insurgency. And other criminal activities in our society.” 
 
The minister said the government has made adequate plans to ensure the ex-servicemen have hitch free resettlement, urging them to prudently manage their retirement benefits. 
 
“The government has continued to vigorously pursue a policy of due process, aimed at ensuring transparency, accountability and rule of law. This in no doubt will culminate in the transformation of all spheres of our national life,” he said. 
 
“You must uphold the highest standards of conduct, character, integrity, excellence, service and team work. As worthy ambassadors of the service, you will be held accountable for these standards even in retirement. 
 
“You must therefore spread these values and virtues wherever you find yourselves.”

The Lagos State Government has finally reduced the perennial traffic on Third Mainland Bridge during peak hours with the completion of the multiple lay-bys at Iyana Oworo Bus Stop. 
 
With the completion ‎of the lay-bys, travel time from Lagos Island to Mainland on the bridge has significantly reduced from about four hours to between 16 and 20 minutes during peak periods.

The state Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Dayo Mobereola led journalists on an assessment tour of the area to see the impact of the lay-bys on the traffic gridlock on the bridge. 
 
Mobereola described the lay-bys as parts of the measures put in place by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode administration to unlock the traffic gridlock on Third Mainland Bridge and other parts of Lagos. 
 
The commissioner said the Iyana-Oworonsoki area had been a major traffic trajectory within Lagos that had significant negative traffic culture since there were inadequate lay-bys provided for the multiple vehicles plying the area, adding that the other points were Alapere and Berger as well as the intersection at Ilubirin 
 
“The gridlock was caused by the vehicles who drop passengers on the road. We have emergency lay-by, lay-by for cars, staff bus, LASTMA ‎ Park as well as Emergency Park. The problem with transportation in Lagos is the traffic at the junctions‎ and we are assessing it in a holistic manner. By the time we are done with Oworonshoki, we will move to the other side of Oworonshoki to address the traffic challenges for those moving towards Island. 
 
“This is because in the morning as early as 5.30 a.m., traffic begins to build up even at Gbagada axis, so we are creating ‎lay-bys on that axis. The only way we can tackle these problems is to do it in holistic manners,” he said. 
 
The commissioner said with the construction of the lay-bys, the travel time on the Third Mainland Bridge from Obalende has been reduced to 15 minutes. 
 
Director, Transportation Engineering, Ministry of Transportation, Mr Bolaji Bada, said the lay-by was designed to accommodate 36 cars, 18 coastal buses and 55 commercial buses at a time. 
 
“The project content include: parallel alternative road, Iyana Oworo lay-by, Berger lay-by, Lagbus lay-by and panel wall. We are also creating another road ‎at Olopomeji,” he added. 
 
Motorists and commuters who spoke on their driving experience on the bridge ‎commended the state government for coming up with the strategy, which had reduce their travel time on the bridge. 
 
According to Adediji Pius, a commuter, he left Lagos Island about 5.58pm and got to Oworonshoki around 6.20pm unlike in the past when he would spend over two hours on the bridge.

David Cameron yesterday resigned as Prime Minister in an emotional speech outside 10 Downing Street. 
 
 
This is just as Britain voted to leave the European Union, with the Leave campaign securing around 51.8 per cent of the vote. 
 
"I do not think it would be right for me to be the captain that steers our country to its next destination," he told reporters outside his Downing Street office. 
 
Mr Cameron, who led the Remain campaign, said he led the campaign with his "head, heart and soul". 
 
In a speech outside Number 10, he said: “I held nothing back, I was absolutely clear about my belief that Britain is stronger, safer and better off inside the European Union and I made clear the referendum was about this and this alone - not the future of any single politician including myself. 
 
“But the British people have made a very clear decision to take a different path and as such I think the country requires fresh leadership to take it in this direction. 
 
“I will do everything I can as Prime Minister to steady the ship over the coming weeks and months but I do not think it would be right for me to try to be the captain that steers our country to its next destination. 
 
“This is not a decision I've taken lightly but I do believe it's in the national interest to have a period of stability and then the new leadership required.” 
 
Mr Cameron confirmed he will continue in his post for the next three months and revealed he aimed for the new Prime Minister to be in place by the start of the Conservative Party conference in October. 
 
Speaking to the world's press outside Number 10 he said: "Good morning everyone, the country has just taken part in a giant democratic exercise, perhaps the biggest in our history. 
 
"Over 33 million people from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Gibraltar have all had their say. 
 
“We should be proud of the fact that in these islands we trust the people for these big decisions. 
 
“We not only have a parliamentary democracy, but on questions about the arrangements for how we've governed there are times when it is right to ask the people themselves and that is what we have done. 
 
“The British people have voted to leave the European Union and their will must be respected. 
 
“I want to thank everyone who took part in the campaign on my side of the argument, including all those who put aside party differences to speak in what they believe was the national interest and let me congratulate all those who took part in the Leave campaign for the spirited and passionate case that they made. 
 
“The will of the British people is an instruction that must be delivered. 
 
"It was not a decision that was taken lightly, not least because so many things were said by so many different organisations about the significance of this decision.” 
 
The Ukip leader also called for June 23 to be declared a Bank Holiday, saying that it will "go down in our history as our independence day". 
 
Mr Farage said: "My feeling is the Prime Minister could have risen up to the fray. He chose not to, I think he probably has to go. I think we have to have a Brexit Prime Minister." 
 
He suggested that Boris Johnson, Michael Gove or Liam Fox would be potential leadership contenders. 
 
He accused Mr Cameron and Chancellor George Osborne of behaving in an "appalling" way during the campaign. 
 
As Mr Cameron's resignation was announced, a string of Conservative figures paid tribute to his leadership. 
 
Margot James, MP for Stourbridge, wrote: "Tears in my eyes as I listened to the PM, he has been a good PM in very difficult circumstances, I am glad he has resisted the siren voices."

REVEALED: America has “solid evidence” of sex scandal against Nigerian lawmakers

 U.S. officials have “solid evidence” of the alleged misconduct Ambassador James Entwistle reported to House of Representatives Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, high-level diplomatic sources say. 
 
In a letter dated June 9, the U.S. Ambassador in Nigeria, Mr. Entwistle, accused three Nigerian lawmakers – Mohammed Garba Gololo (Bauchi APC), Samuel Ikon (Akwa Ibom PDP) and Mark Gbillah (Benue APC) – of soliciting sexual favours from hotel staff in two separate incidents.

Mr. Gololo allegedly grabbed a housekeeper in his hotel room and solicited her for sex while Messrs. Ikon and Gbilla allegedly requested hotel parking attendants to assist them to procure prostitutes. 
 
The alleged incidents occurred in April at the Residence Inn Marriot, Downtown Cleveland and were promptly reported to State Department officials by the hotel’s management. 
 
In response to the lawmakers’ denial of the allegations and threats of legal action, local sources in Cleveland and sources close to State Department and the Nigerian diaspora community in Washington DC have revealed that relevant U.S. officials are in possession of records specifying “circumstances of” the alleged incidents, including “eyewitness reports” and real-time “video” evidence. 
 
“The Ambassador wouldn’t have written to the Speaker if there is no solid evidence,” said one of our sources, who added that after the hotel manager reported the incidents, State Department officers “had to investigate before acting on the allegations.” 
 
The investigation was extensive and exhaustive; it included interrogation of relevant hotel staff and review of all closed-circuit cameras in the vicinity of the alleged incidents, state department insiders said. 
 
Hinting at details of the investigation, our source countered Mr. Gololo’s denial, insisting that of the three lawmakers, “he is the one who actually put his hand on somebody, the others only made a verbal request”. 
 
It was learnt from the state department that “the woman he (Gololo) allegedly accosted felt intimidated”. Local Cleveland sources told us that she feared she would lose her job if she screamed or caused discomfort to the hotel’s other guests. 
 
She however reported the incident to her supervisor at the soonest opportunity after extricating herself from the offensive situation. 
 
Our source equally brushed aside Mr. Gbilla’s protestations about not having a car as a diversion. 
“You don’t need to have a car to talk to a parking lot attendant,” he said. 
 
This newspaper was reliably informed by our Washington DC sources that Ambassador Entwistle would neither retract nor apologize for the contents of the letter sent to the Speaker. 
 
“In all honesty, the Ambassador would not have gone forward with the letter if there is no solid evidence behind it,” he said adding that Mr. Entwistle “is not going to apologize; there is nothing to apologize for.” 
 
Contrary to Mr. Gbillah’s assertion that Mr. Entwistle’s petition was an attempt “to bring disrepute to the hallowed institution of the National Assembly and the entire nation of Nigeria”, our source said the intention was to put out there that some participants in the International Visitor Leadership Programme (IVLP), not all, are guilty of bad behaviour and to educate participants who may be admitted for this and other programmes in future. 
 
“The reality is that these three gentlemen made a mistake. They violated the terms of the IVLP of which they were duly informed before they left Abuja,” our source said. 
 
“Prostitution is not legal in the U.S., they were informed about that before their departure,” the source said. 
 
Our source insists that the lawmakers even had a chance to redeem their image after the fact. 
 
“If they had been remorseful, if they had just said it was miscommunication and apologized, that would have been the end of it,” the source said. 
 
Instead, the lawmakers over-reacted and made their case “sound worse than it is”, said our source. 
“They were accused of assault and solicitation, no one talked about rape,” the source added. 
 
It was learnt that State Department officials are not worried about the lawmakers’ threat of legal action because, according to our Washington DC sources, “they know their evidence will hold up in court”. 
 
“If they (Gololo, Ikon and Gbillah) want the full spotlight of the justice system to shine on the evidence in the possession of the State Department, they should go ahead and initiate a lawsuit,” the source said. 
 
He also insisted that the lawmakers were accorded due respect even after hotel staff reported the incidents to their managers. 
 
“Their conduct was a breach of U.S. law, instead of calling State Department officials, hotel managers could have had them summarily arrested and charged. As it is, everybody gave them a pass, letting them complete the programme without interference,” said the source. 
 
The lawmakers’ alleged misconduct resonated negatively among Nigerian-Americans who are active in ongoing U.S. presidential election campaigns. 
 
Those scheduled to be in Cleveland next month for the Republican Convention and allied political activities are weary that they may be victimized for the lawmakers’ bad behaviour. 
Hotel management and staff may single them out for unsavoury treatment, they said. 
 
“I won’t be surprised if they keep female service staff away from anyone who identifies as a Nigerian or carries Nigerian passport,” a Washington-based Nigerian said. 
 
Nigerian Embassy in Washington DC has operated without an ambassador since the death of Professor Adebowale Adefuye last September. 
 
When contacted, Gbara Awanen, Head of the Political Section, Embassy of Nigeria, Washington DC, said other than what he read in the Nigerian media, he knew nothing about the incident. 
 
Other officials declined to comment for this story.

 President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday pleaded with Niger Delta militants to soft pedal on the bombing and destruction of oil and gas installations.  
 
He asked those close to the militants to prevail on them to take it easy in the interest of the nation. Buhari made the call during the breaking of fast with All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

“I honestly don’t know how many factions the militants are in the Niger Delta compared to the Northeast where you have Boko Haram,” he said. “The technology being deployed by the militants to destroy oil installations is high tech.The way they can go on high sea and international waters and target oil installations is a national problem. It is affecting development. 
 
“No insurance company will want to insure installations that will end up being blown up and no banks will want to finance such installations. “Those of you who have friends among the leadership or even the militants themselves should plead with them in the name of God Almighty to take it easy. “We need to stabilize to create employment. We need to stabilize the economy etc. I agonize over these things. “We are in a very difficult time, so we have to organize ourselves. Anybody that says he has any other country than Nigeria should go out and see.” 
 
The President also said that the successful conduct of the APC primaries in Edo State has given him a new hope. He said that Ondo State is going to be watched very closely in order to ensure that the vote of the people count. The APC National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun welcomed the President back from his medical vacation abroad. He also expressed satisfaction with what the President has been able to achieve in a short time. He said: “Corruption is fighting back and change does not come easily.

Trading on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), on Friday, ended on a negative note, halting a three-day rally due to profit taking and exit of Britain from European Union (EU). 
 
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the market capitalisation lost N145 billion or 1.36 per cent to close at N10.526 trillion against N10.671 trillion achieved on Thursday.

Also, the All-Share Index which opened at 31,071.25 declined by 421.59 points or 1.36 per cent to close at 30,649.66. Mr Ambrose Omordion, the Chief Operating Officer, InvestData Consulting Ltd., attributed the pull back to profit taking and global market reaction to Brexit (exit of Britain from EU). 
 
Omordion urged investors not to panic over the development but should target valuable stocks with huge upside potentials. He explained that some investors were booking profits from recent gains recorded by the market in the last couple of days. Omordion said Britain would seek new trade accords with countries around the world with the exit; noting that quitting the EU would cost Britain access to the EU’s trade barrier-free single market. 
 
NAN reports that Nigerian Breweries topped the losers’ chart, shedding N4.49 to close at N145 per share. Dangote Cement shed N3.76 to close at N200.20 and Unilever lost 70k to close at N17 per share. Zenith Bank also depreciated by 70k to close at N17, while Flour Mill shed 25k to close at N23.75 per share. 
 
Conversely, Glaxosmithkline recorded the highest gain to lead the gainers’ table with a gain of N2.05 to close at N22.12 per share. Julius Berger came second with N1.90 to close at N44, while Conoil gained N1.04 to close at N22 per share. Presco improved by 80k to close at N36.50 and Okomu Oil garnered 50k to close at N31.50 per share. NAN also reports that a total of 444.51 million shares worth N3.70 billion were exchanged by investors in 5,565 deals. 
 
This was against the 450.52 million shares valued at N5.71 billion transacted by investors in 6,360 deals on Thursday. NEM Insurance was the most active, trading 91.35 million shares worth N85.89 million. 
 
It was trailed by Transcorp with 50.58 million shares valued at N100.11 million and Zenith Bank sold 41.48 million shares worth N699.30 million. 
 
FBN Holdings traded 36.18 million shares valued at N150.38 million and investors staked N853.02 million on 35.83 million shares of Guaranty Trust Bank.
