Barely six days after 17 exotic vehicles were recovered from a Kaduna warehouse belonging to former Comptroller-General of Customs, Abdullahi Dikko Inde by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), another set of items including vehicles, tricycles and motorcycles have been recovered.<br />

The items which were recovered on Monday and Tuesday from another warehouse said to be property of the former Customs boss include a 2013 model 32-seater Nissan bus, 42 cargo tricycles, one tipper truck, 16 motorcycles, over 500 rug carpets and two fire-proof safes.<br />
<br />
Briefing newsmen on the recovery in Kaduna on Tuesday, Zonal Head, EFCC Kaduna, Bappa Ibrahim said, the recovery was made based on intelligence report and tip-off at the disposal of the agency.<br />
<br />
He said the operation which led to the recovery of the items was a continuation of the anti-graft agency’s investigation on the former Customs boss.<br />
<br />
Ibrahim said, the items were recovered from a warehouse, off Nnamdi Azikwe Express Way, around NASFAT village, in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, the two recovered safes which were broke opened by EFCC operatives in the presence of press cameras contained only few documents, an iron stamp, 50 and 20 naira notes, amounting to N1,560 and polythene bags.<br />
<br />
The Zonal EFCC boss refused making comments on the documents found inside the safes, saying further investigations would be carried out on the documents.<br />
<br />
According to him, “As you can see, we have recovered more items from the former ComptrComptrroller-Generaleco of Customs, Abdullahi Dikko Inde. The items include 32-seater Nissan bus, 42 cargo tricycles, one tipper truck, 16 motorcycles, over 500 rug carpets and two fire-proof safes.<br />

“The recovery was possible because of tip-off we received and intelligence report. We made the recovery from a warehouse belonging to former Comptroller-General of Customs, Abdullahi Dikko Inde around NASFAT village, off Nnamdi Azikwe Express Way, here in Kaduna.<br />
<br />
“The fresh operation which started on Monday, 27th February, 2017 till today is a continuation of the last week operation which led to recovery of 17 exotic vehicles”, he said.<br />
<br />
He however called on general public to always assist the anti-graft agency with useful information, as the war against corruption is responsibility of everyone, and should not be left for EFCC alone.<br />

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has asked former President Olusegun Obasanjo to stop making provocative statements that could distract and discourage Nigerians from fixing the economy.<br />

The governor was reacting to a statement credited to Obasanjo in which he said his generation had failed the nation.<br />
<br />
Fayose, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, said Obasanjo’s sanctimonious self-righteousness was misleading, self-serving and discomfiting, and not what the country needed at this time.<br />
<br />
He advised Obasanjo to speak for himself rather than making a generalised statement.<br />
<br />
“There is much suffering in the land. The people are hungry. Yet, one of those responsible for this unsavoury state of affairs relishes in adding insult to the people’s injury. He makes statements that are not only reckless but also untrue.<br />
<br />
“Obasanjo, truly, has failed this country many times over but not all members of his generation failed this country. There are shinning lights in that generation that have served the nation well.<br />
<br />
“How about Emeka Anyaoku, Wole Soyinka, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Prof. Ayodele Awojobi? The list is endless and they are to be found in all the nooks and crannies of this country who belong in the same generation as Obasanjo and who have done this country proud,” he said.<br />
<br />
Fayose, however, lamented that Obasanjo wasted all the golden opportunities that he had to make this country great, first as a military Head of State and later as a two-term civilian president.<br />
<br />
“It is too late in the day for him to now cry over other countries that have passed Nigeria by. This is mere crocodile tears when we realise that no other Nigerian leader had the opportunities that Obasanjo had to make this country great but he bungled them all.<br />
<br />
“He should speak for himself and not rope his entire generation into his misadventure in governance. Here is a man who neither recognised nor encouraged any star except himself. He must shoot them down or disparage them.<br />
<br />
“For him, Obafemi Awolowo was not patriotic; MKO Abiola was not the messiah Nigeria needed; Tinubu was a rascal; Jonathan was not good; and President Muhammadu Buhari did not understand economics. Only Obasanjo is good. Only Obasanjo fought and won the civil war. Only Obasanjo understands everything – from economics to military to foreign affairs.<br />
<br />
“Yet, this is the same Obasanjo that laid the foundation for corruption in this country with his ill-fated third-term misadventure when billions of Naira was used to bribe National Assembly members. This is the same Obasanjo that turned EFCC under Nuhu Ribadu into his private army to harass political opponents.<br />
<br />
“Under this same Obasanjo, eight civilian governors were illegally and unceremoniously removed from office through kangaroo impeachment. Minority members of the Houses of Assembly were empowered to override the majority members. Under Obasanjo, our elections were “wuru-wuru” and “mago-mago” and we were the laughing stock of the international community.<br />
<br />
“This same Obasanjo, who came back from prison a pauper, ask him how much he is worth today and how he made the money? The launching of his Presidential Library, which he is preparing to commission soon, attracted donations that ran into billions of Naira while he was in office. Only God knows how many more billions the commissioning will garner this time around.”

The number of internet users in Nigeria’s telecommunications networks declined to 91, 274,446 in January, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) said.<br />

The NCC made the disclosure in its Monthly Internet Subscribers Data for January 2017 on its website on Tuesday in Abuja.<br />
<br />
According to the data released, internet users dropped to 91,274,446 in January as against 91,880.032 users recorded in December 2016, showing a decline of 605,586.<br />
<br />
The data also showed that the GSM service providers lost 605,586 internet customers after recording 91, 274,446 in January as against 91,880,032 users in December 2016.<br />
<br />
The data revealed that MTN had 31,015.45 subscribers browsing the internet on its network in the month of January.<br />
<br />
It explained that MTN recorded a drop of 737, 964 internet subscribers in January after recording 31,753.369 in December 2016.<br />
<br />
Airtel had 19,618.485 internet users in January, adding 254, 94 customers to its December record of 19,363.545.<br />
<br />
In Etisalat, the data showed 13,564.284 customers who browsed the internet in January revealing a decrease of 188.656 users against the 13,752.940 users recorded in December 2016.<br />
<br />
The data showed that Globacom had 27,076,272 customers browsing the internet on its network in January.<br />
<br />
This amounted to an increase of 66,094 users from the 27,010.178 users of the internet on the network in December 2016. (NAN)

The naira continued to regain strength and appreciate in value in the parallel market on Tuesday as it was sold for N425 to a dollar.<br />

However, it was N450 to a dollar at the close of transactions on Monday.<br />
<br />
At the Bureau De Change market in Abuja on Tuesday BDC operators bought at the rate of N415 and sold at N425.<br />
<br />
The BDC operators bought the Pound Sterling at N500 and sold at N510, while the Euro was bought for N420 and sold for N425.<br />
<br />
For the inter-bank rate, the dollar exchanged for N331.6, Euro 335.75, while the pound exchanged for N394.25<br />
<br />
Some of the BDC operators said that the provision of forex by the CBN to the commercial banks was responsible for the appreciation of the naira in the market.<br />
<br />
Mr Sani Ahmed, one of the operators said that the best way to crash the high rate in the market was the continuous injection of liquidity into the market.<br />
<br />
According to him, the appreciation of the naira is a good development for the BDC operators and other investors who require forex for their businesses.<br />
<br />
He said, “Now that the naira is appreciating, we make more profit because if you buy at the lower rate, you sell and make gain.<br />
<br />
“When the cost of dollar is high, we make little profit; but when it is low, we make more profit because we buy more to sell.”<br />
<br />
He, however, said that there was the challenge of accessing the forex from the commercial banks because of the stringent measures stipulated by the deposit money banks to obtain the forex.<br />
<br />
“If someone applies for forex from the banks, it takes time and the process is frustrating; sometimes, they make additional demands before they issue forex to you,” Ahmed said.<br />
<br />
Experts have, however, expressed concern about the sustainability of the measures by the apex bank.<br />
<br />
An economic expert, Prof. Uche Uwaleke, admitted that a complete currency float was capable of unifying rates and reducing round tripping and speculative activities in the market.<br />
<br />
He, however, said that such a measure could be suicidal for an import-dependent economy that derived much of its forex inflow from a single commodity.<br />
<br />
He, therefore, recommended coordinated fiscal policies designed to encourage import substitution and enhance competitiveness of local production to help reverse the downward trend in the value of naira. (NAN)

Governors that attended the meeting included Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa); Ibrahim Dankwabo (Gombe); Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta); Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia); Dave Umahi (Ebonyi); Benedict Ayade (Cross River); Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom); Darius Ishaku (Taraba); Ayo Fayose (Ekiti); and the Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Ipalibo Banigo.<br />

A Boko Haram suspect who escaped from the custody of the State Security Service, SSS, has been rearrested.<br />
<br />
Muktar Suleiman and others still at large escaped from SSS (also called DSS) custody in 2015, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.<br />

A Lokoja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday ordered that Mr. Suleiman be remanded in prison custody.<br />
<br />
The Chief Magistrate, Levi Animoku, who gave the order, described the charges preferred against the accused as horrifying and grievous.<br />
“Culpable homicide is the highest crime in our legal system.<br />
<br />
“Section 341(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) simpliciter, precludes a court from granting bail to a person accused of such offence.<br />
“Consequently, the accused shall be remanded at the Federal Prisons, Koton-Karfe and the case is adjourned till March 16, for mention,” he ruled.<br />
The prosecuting counsel, Mohammed Abaji, in his application for the remand of the accused, urged the court to take cognisance of the charges preferred against him.<br />
<br />
Mr. Abaji, a counsel in the Ministry of Justice, said the accused was arraigned on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide and belonging to a gang of brigands.<br />
<br />
He said that the offences contravened Sections 97(1), 221, 305 of the Penal Code and Section 4 of the Terrorism [Prevention][Amendment] Act 2013.<br />
Mr. Abaji told the court that Mr. Suleiman and one other currently at large, members of the outlawed Boko Haram, escaped from custody of the SSS with the aid of other members of the group in 2015.<br />
<br />
The escapees, according to Mr. Abaji, killed a police officer and a fellow inmate during their escape.<br />
He said that investigations revealed that they fled to places in Yobe, Zaria and Kano for further training about three months ago.<br />
The prosecutor said that investigations revealed that the accused and others after their training came to Otukpo in Benue, as well as Ankpa, Idah,and Anyigba in Kogi on recruitment drive.<br />
<br />
Mr. Abaji also told the court that the accused and his group were planning to launch attacks on specific places in Ankpa and Anyigba before he was arrested.<br />
<br />
He urged the court to adjourn the case for mention to allow for completion of investigations into the matter.<br />
About 100,000 people have been killed in Northern Nigeria since the Boko Haram crisis started in 2009.

A Medview Airline flight from Lagos to Yola was on Tuesday aborted after the pilot observed a fault in the aircraft’s cooling system while preparing for take-off.<br />

Obuke Oyibhota, media consultant to Medview Airline, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.<br />
Mr. Oyibhota said the aircraft, carrying over 100 persons, was still taxiing at the runway of the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos, when the fault was observed.<br />
<br />
“The incident happened around midday. The aircraft did not make an air return. The plane was taxiing when the Captain in charge noticed that the cabin was hot.<br />
<br />
“If he had taken off, it could have stabilised the cooling system but as a precautionary measure, he taxied back to base.<br />
“That was what happened and nobody was hurt. The said aircraft is on ground and our team of engineers are examining the aircraft to ascertain what led to it,” he said.<br />
<br />
According to him, the passengers disembarked and were transferred to another aircraft to continue their journey to Yola en route Abuja.<br />
Mr. Oyibhota said Medview Airline remains committed to the safety and comfort of its passengers.<br />
<br />
He added that the action of the pilot was in accordance with the Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).<br />
<br />
A passenger on the airplane, Oladejo Olowu, told newsmen that affected passengers had been lodged in a hotel in Lagos.<br />
He said passengers travelling to Abuja were scheduled to join another flight by 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, while a new flight was scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday for those travelling to Yola.<br />
<br />
Mr. Olowu, a professor, said passengers had suspected that the plane, with flight number VL 2102, was faulty before takeoff.<br />
They were assured by the pilot and the crew that all was well, the passenger said, adding that the plane had to return to the Lagos Airport due to the problem few minutes after take-off.<br />
<br />
The Medview incident happened a day after a Boeing 737 aircraft belonging to Air Peace on Monday suffered a burst tyre while preparing for take-off at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.<br />
The incident forced the pilot to abort the flight which was to convey 105 passengers from Lagos to Abuja.

The property of several Nigerians and other sub-Saharan Africans have been destroyed across South Africa in xenophobic attacks that have been condemned by various governments.<br />
<br />
While asking its citizens to stop the attacks, the South African government has also blamed illegal immigrants from Nigeria and other countries, as well immigrants who commit crime for the attacks. The government has thus decided to clamp down on such immigrants.<br />
<br />
The 97 deported Nigerians landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos on Monday night in a chartered aircraft with the registration number GBB710 from Johannesburg.<br />
<br />
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that they were made up of 95 males and two females.<br />
<br />
Joseph Alabi, the spokesperson of the Lagos Airport Police Command, confirmed the development.<br />
<br />
An immigration source told NAN on condition of anonymity that six of the deportees were returned to the country for drug offences while 10 were arrested and deported for other criminal offences .<br />
<br />
The others were said to have committed immigration offences in the Southern African country.<br />
<br />
<br />
All the deportees were profiled by officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) while those deported for drug related offences were handed over to the Police for further investigation.<br />
<br />
The Federal Government had also on Monday evacuated 41 Nigerian girls who were trafficked to Mali for sex and labour exploitation.<br />
Six of the suspected human traffickers were also apprehended and brought back to the country for prosecution.

Lagos State Ministry of Transport has no plan to ban yellow buses known as “Danfo” but to upgrade them to international standard, the acting Commissioner for Transport, Mr Lanrewaju Elegushi, has disclosed.<br />

Elegushi made the disclosure in Lagos on Tuesday during a stakeholder’s forum to deliberate on how to improve the transport system in the state.<br />

He said that the plan of the government was to restructure the transportation system in the state to international standard.<br />

He said, “What we are planning is to restructure the transportation system in the state to meet international standard.<br />
<br />
“That is why we organised this forum to seek the contributions of the people involved at the new Bus Terminal at Tafawa Balewa Square.<br />
<br />
“We are changing the face of the transport system in Lagos state with fully air condition buses, charging port, CCTV and other infrastructure for the benefit of commuters.”<br />
<br />
Elegushi said the government had also embarked on the building of standard bus terminus in various locations across the state, to standardise the transport system.<br />
<br />
The acting commissioner appealed to the stakeholders to make judicious use of the new bus terminal at TBS.<br />

According to him, the current economic recession is an opportunity to build and reconstruct the nation.<br />

He blamed the recession on the failure of people to institute a proper structure to sustain the nation’s resources.<br />

He said that NCPC would contribute spiritually and socially toward the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the country.<br />

He said, “We owe this nation our service; remove sectional barriers and stand for what is right in our nation and in our service to God.’’<br />

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said that motorcycles and tricycles should not be banned nationwide because doing so would affect the nation’s economy negatively.<br />

Amaechi said this on Tuesday in Abuja at the celebration of the national day of Amalgamated Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners, Repairers and Riders Association of Nigeria.<br />

The minister advised state governments not to ban commercial cyclists but train them to reduce their recklessness on the road and ensure strict compliance with rules and regulations.<br />
<br />
He said, “I don’t think we should ban Okada because if we do, it will affect the economy; they only need to be trained to obey rules and regulations.<br />
<br />
“The issue of security, safety and regulation should be dealt with at the state level; state governments should train Okada riders.”<br />
<br />
He urged the operators avoid recklessness and obey traffic rules and regulations in order to reduce the rate of accidents.<br />
<br />
According to him, commercial cyclists play vital roles in the transportation sector, especially in transporting agricultural produce where roads are not easily accessible.<br />
<br />
He said, “We know you play a vital role in the economy: Not all buses, taxis can access our roads for agricultural purposes; a lot of Nigerians depend on you because your services are cheap.<br />
<br />
“The economy cannot only grow through white collar jobs; everybody doesn’t need to depend on government and what you have done is to be self-employed to feed yourselves.”<br />
<br />
Shehu Babangida, National President of ACOMORAN, said that the day was an annual event designed to celebrate the informal sector in Nigeria.<br />
<br />
He said the association’s 12 million membership had massively reduced the rate of unemployment and criminality in the country by engaging vulnerable youths.<br />
<br />

According to him, the restructuring was aimed at expanding the opportunities available to candidates since almost all the public universities do not consider candidates on the second choice list because they hardly exhaust their first choice.<br />

He said, “We have designed a Central Admissions Processing System where the Board will interface with the institutions and ensure the compliance of this reform. The summary is that no candidate will be admitted with awaiting result. Candidates and their parents are also to note that JAMB has restructured the registration platform to allow for only one choice of public university. The new registration platform will now be first choice, second choice, third choice and fourth choice and not most preferred, preferred etc as it was.<br />

“Candidates’ first choice can be a College, University, Innovative Enterprises Institutions or Polytechnic/Monotechnic. However, if a candidate makes a Public University his first choice, he will not have any public University to choose for second, third and fourth choice. He will have on the remaining three choices, a College, Polytechnic, Private University and IEI’S. However, candidates for the 2017 UTME can now select National Certificate in Education (College) or National Diploma (Polytechnic/Monotechnic) as their first choice up to third choice and the fourth IEI. They can select the IEI (Innovative Enterprise Institution, ND) as their first choice up to the fourth choice, but can only pick a public university once.”

Iran is one of the seven countries included on this executive order from US President Donald Trump.<br />

A Boko Haram suspect who escaped from the custody of the State Security Service, SSS, has been rearrested.<br />

Muktar Suleiman and others still at large escaped from SSS (also called DSS) custody in 2015, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.<br />
A Lokoja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday ordered that Mr. Suleiman be remanded in prison custody.<br />
<br />
The Chief Magistrate, Levi Animoku, who gave the order, described the charges preferred against the accused as horrifying and grievous.<br />
“Culpable homicide is the highest crime in our legal system.<br />
<br />
“Section 341(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) simpliciter, precludes a court from granting bail to a person accused of such offence.<br />
<br />
“Consequently, the accused shall be remanded at the Federal Prisons, Koton-Karfe and the case is adjourned till March 16, for mention,” he ruled.<br />
The prosecuting counsel, Mohammed Abaji, in his application for the remand of the accused, urged the court to take cognisance of the charges preferred against him.<br />
<br />
Mr. Abaji, a counsel in the Ministry of Justice, said the accused was arraigned on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide and belonging to a gang of brigands.<br />
He said that the offences contravened Sections 97(1), 221, 305 of the Penal Code and Section 4 of the Terrorism [Prevention][Amendment] Act 2013.<br />
<br />
Mr. Abaji told the court that Mr. Suleiman and one other currently at large, members of the outlawed Boko Haram, escaped from custody of the SSS with the aid of other members of the group in 2015.<br />
<br />
The escapees, according to Mr. Abaji, killed a police officer and a fellow inmate during their escape.<br />
<br />
He said that investigations revealed that they fled to places in Yobe, Zaria and Kano for further training about three months ago.<br />
<br />
The prosecutor said that investigations revealed that the accused and others after their training came to Otukpo in Benue, as well as Ankpa, Idah,and Anyigba in Kogi on recruitment drive.<br />
<br />
Mr. Abaji also told the court that the accused and his group were planning to launch attacks on specific places in Ankpa and Anyigba before he was arrested.<br />
<br />
He urged the court to adjourn the case for mention to allow for completion of investigations into the matter.<br />
<br />
About 100,000 people have been killed in Northern Nigeria since the Boko Haram crisis started in 2009.

In a statement on Tuesday, the foundation said it made the decision following a meeting of the independent prize committee chaired by Salim Ahmed Salim, a renowned diplomat.<br />

The statement quoted Salim to have said: “As I emphasise each year, a very high bar was deliberately set when the prize was launched in 2006.<br />
<br />
“We recognise and applaud the important contributions that many African leaders have made to change their countries for the better. But the prize is intended to highlight and celebrate truly exceptional leadership, which is uncommon by its very definition.<br />
<br />
“After careful consideration, the committee has decided not to award the prize in 2016.”<br />
<br />
The candidates for the Ibrahim Prize are all former African executive heads of state or government who have left their office during the last three calendar years (2014-2016), having been democratically elected and served their constitutionally mandated term.<br />
<br />
Since being launched in 2006, the Ibrahim Prize has been awarded four times.<br />
<br />
The previous Laureates are President Hifikepunye Pohamba of Namibia (2014), President Pedro Pires of Cabo Verde (2011), President Festus Mogae of Botswana (2008), and President Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique (2007). Nelson Mandela was the inaugural Honorary Laureate in 2007.

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, on Tuesday, stormed the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court over a suit seeking to sack him from office for alleged “electoral fraud”.<br />

The suit was lodged before the court by a chieftain of the of the All Progressive Congress, APC, in the state, Senator Umaru Dahiru.<br />
<br />
Dahiru alleged that Tambuwal was illegally nominated by the APC to participate in the 2015 general election. He told the court that the APC conducted “a fraudulent” primary election in 2014 in its bid to ensure that Tambuwal emerged as it gubernatorial flag-bearer in Sokoto State.<br />
<br />
It will be recalled that Tambuwal who was previously a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, defected to APC few months before the April 11, 2015, governorship election took place.<br />
<br />
The gubernatorial ticket was handed to him by the party at the expense of the plaintiff, Dahiru who was also an aspirant.<br />
<br />
Dissatisfied with the development, Dahiru took the matter to court. He alleged that the list of accredited delegates was swapped at the election venue and that votes were arbitrarily, unlawfully and fraudulently allocated to the aspirants after series of manipulation, intimidation and threat from the then state government.<br />
<br />
Before the election was held, the plaintiff had sought for a declaration that the primary poll of December 4, 2014 that produced Tambuwal was unlawful, unconstitutional, null and void and inconsistent with the Electoral Act, 2010 and the APC guidelines.<br />
<br />
Aside insisting that he was the authentic governorship candidate of the party, Dahiru applied for an order restraining INEC from acting, publishing or recognising Tambuwal as APC gubernatorial candidate.<br />
<br />
Though the high court, in a judgment by Justice Evoh Chukwu, ruled in favour of the plaintiff, however, the Court of Appeal in Abuja nullified the verdict, saying the respondent’s case was academic.<br />
<br />
However, in a twist of events, the Supreme Court, in a judgment on December 9, 2016, held that Dahiru has made out a valid case against Tambuwal.<br />
<br />
The apex court directed that the case should be heard afresh on its merit by the high court.<br />
<br />
At the resumed hearing of the matter on Tuesday, Tambuwal came in person to witness the proceeding, even as 35 lawyers, including two Senior Advocates of Nigeria, announced their appearances for him.<br />
<br />
Justice Gabriel Kolawole is currently conducting hearing on the case.

Panic gripped over 100 passengers on Tuesday as Medview Airline flight from Lagos to Abuja was suspended midair after a fault was observed.<br />

There was pandemonium, on Monday, in Asaba, Delta State capital, when a gang of five armed robbers stormed a branch of an old generation bank in an attempt to rob a customer who had come to the bank deposit huge sum of money.<br />

However, the customer, a middle-aged man, was shot in the chest region at close range because of his refusal to let go of the bag of money.<br />
<br />
An eyewitness told newsmen that the incident occurred at about 8.15am, adding that residents in the area scampered for safety at the sound of the gun.<br />
<br />
Besides, about five policemen stationed at the bank premises took to their heels during the operation, with three of them removing their uniforms in order not to be identified as security operatives by the enemies of state.<br />
<br />
According to the eyewitness, the bandits who operated in a blue Golf car had been around the bank’s neighbourhood for over an hour before the arrival of their target who came to the bank in a commercial tricycle popularly known as Keke Napep.<br />
<br />
Although the victim later gave up the ghost on the way to the hospital, his rare display of courage ensured that the robbers did not cart away the money as he staggered into the bank premises after he was shot.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, the victim who was in the pool of his blood was said to have been rushed to the hospital by the bank officials, who gotten hold of the money, buts gave up the ghost on the way. His corpse was deposited at the mortuary of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC).<br />
<br />
Public Relations Officer of the state police command, DSP Andrew Aniamaka who confirmed the incident said the matter was already being investigated.

The Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos, Moshood Salvador, has expressed displeasure over former President Goodluck Jonathan’s alleged indifference towards the leadership crisis in the party until it degenerated to the current state of affairs.<br />

Salvador, who was a former member of the House of Representatives between 1999 and 2003, said that Jonathan had been in a very good position to resolve the matter but turned a blind eye.<br />

He stated this in Lagos while fielding questions from the media on the current crisis rocking the party at the national level.<br />
<br />
The ex-lawmaker chided the former President for not deploying his capacities and experience early enough in nipping the leadership crisis in the bud.<br />
<br />
He said that if he were in Jonathan’s position, he would have advised Sheriff to call a national convention without delay and resign with pride and honour; stressing that the most logical thing to do was to remind Sheriff that he had hitherto given up his leadership position in party when he convened the controversial Port-Harcourt convention that threw up the National Caretaker Committee led by Ahmed Makarfi.<br />
<br />
Salvador alleged that the Justices of the Appeal Court that ruled in favour of Ali Modu Sheriff while declaring the national caretaker committee illegal did not study the party’s constitution.<br />
<br />
<br />
According to him, the party’s constitution stated that the convention is the supreme organ of the party, and the convention has the power to organize a committee that can be given a special assignment. Hence, the Ahmed Makarfi-led committee was in no way illegal since it derived its operating powers from the convention that Sheriff convened in Port-Harcourt.<br />
<br />
He said: “I’m not just happy with our former president for abandoning us this long. Well, former President Goodluck Jonathan is in a very good position to resolve the matter. I can assure you, he has the capacity; he has the experience. He abandoned us for too long to let this crisis develop to a very terrible state to let this crisis before coming on board.<br />
<br />
“If I were in a position to resolve the PDP crisis, I will just advise Ali Modu Sheriff to pipe-down having gotten the judgement from Court of Appeal, I expect him to now call everybody and go back and resign, because he was the one that convened the convention which was his responsibility.<br />
<br />
“At the time he was convening the convention, he has already appointed a convention chairman. Now, the convention chairman takes over the affairs of the party during the convention. Also, Ali Modu Sheriff collected forms, paid for it, submitted himself to screening and at that particular point, he was no longer the chairman but an aspirant of chairmanship position we need to clear this.<br />

<br />
“Nobody can say the constitution of caretaker committee is wrong. The court declared the Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee illegal because it refused to study the PDP constitution before passing its judgement. This is where the real problem came from.<br />
<br />
“The constitution of the PDP clearly stated that the convention is the supreme organ of the party, and the convention has the power to organize a committee that can be given a special assignment.<br />
<br />
“Having given them the court order that the convention must not contest election into some offices, you can see that the PDP obeyed that order. The party did not contest election into those offices. That was why we had to introduce caretaker committee which is within the purview of the party to do that.<br />
<br />
“I don’t know who the court stops and he refuses to stop. Already court has given judgement at the court of appeal but as long as the Makarfi faction of the party has filed a stay-of-action and has appealed the decision, I think status quo should remain. The status will be that the secretariat should remain as it is pending the decision of the Supreme Court.<br />
<br />
“As long as the ruling has been appealed at the Supreme Court, it is enough to tell that there are dissatisfactions with the ruling of Court of Appeal, and it is tantamount to a stay-of-execution injunction. Therefore, it is nonsensical for someone to say Makarfi is parading himself as chairman of caretaker committee. That is less than acceptable.”

This was sequel to a motion moved on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday, by the Senator representing Edo South, Mathew Urhoghide and seconded by Senator Jeremiah Oseni (Plateau South).<br />

Senator Urhoghide took his time to read the biography and achievements of the late Oba, stressing that, he was also instrumental to the creation of Edo State from the then Bendel State, “the role which necessarily made him the father of Edo State.”<br />
<br />
Urhoghide believed that, “late Oba Erediauwa’s memory is worth immortalizing when his achievements, numerous selfless services and contributions to Nigeria’s development of this outstanding Monarch which are worthy of emulation and commendation are taken into consideration”.<br />
<br />
He also stressed that, the airport was one and half kilometres away from the palace of the Oba of Benin and that the kingdom of the late Monarch was a host to the airport.<br />
<br />
The Senate, therefore, resolved to immortalize the late Monarch, by renaming the federal airport to ‘Oba Erediauwa Airport,’ Benin city.<br />

The Lawmakers also urged relevant Ministry, Department or Agency, vested with the duty of effecting the resolution of the motion, to do so, “in the earliest possible time”.

Over 4000 commercial motorcycles seized for flouting the Lagos State Traffic Law 2012 will be crushed and recycled, Police Commissioner, Fatia Owoseni said yesterday.<br />

The law prohibits Okada and tricycles also known as Keke Marwa from operating in at least 495 of the 9200 roads and routes across the state.<br />
<br />
Owoseni told reporters at the Olusosun Refuse Dumpsite in Ojota that the clampdown on Okada was a fall out of the government’s renewed resolve to address the security issues since criminals operate mostly with okada.<br />
<br />
He said Governor Akinwunmi Ambode had directed the police and other security agencies to ensure the law is complied with.<br />
<br />
The Commissioner said: “It would not be one-off. So far, we have impounded about 500 motorcycles since we started our renewed efforts and we now have a total of about 4, 000 bikes ready to be crushed. The law made provisions on how those motorcycles should be handled and the law also made provision on how to handle those that have flouted the law itself.”<br />
<br />
According to Owoseni, the decision to crush and recycle the motorcycles accords with the law.<br />
The enforcement, he said, would also affect Okada patrons, adding that mobile courts would be instituted to try offenders.<br />
<br />
“The operators of the commercial motorcycles and those patronising them, with time, you will get to see the Mobile Court going around to try some of those that have been arrested. What we are saying here is that we want people in Lagos to know that there is a law and the law is made for a purpose and if all of us obey the law and conform, the better for us.”<br />
<br />
The government, Owoseni said, was considering banning okada in some areas, starting with the Lekki and Victoria Island axis.<br />
<br />
He frowned at the way Okada and Keke Maruwa flout the law, especially by not obeying traffic light, which in most cases lead to avoidable accident and death.<br />
<br />
Acting Commissioner for Transportation, Olanrewaju Elegushi said commercial motorcycles have been warned to clear off restricted routes.<br />
<br />
“We have an enforcement unit led by the Commissioner of Police, the Task Force on Environmental and Other Special Offences, the Divisional Police Officers and the Area Commanders. They have started enforcement and we came to see how far they have gone,” Elegushi said.

Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus in the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has said that irrespective of the nomenclature given to the act of budget-padding, the National Assembly will continue to pad the budget for certain reasons.<br />

Gbajabiamila, who initially claimed not to understand what budget-padding means, explained that lawmakers, even in the most advanced democracies of the world, pad the budget to be able to generate extra money for providing democracy dividends to their respective constituencies especially when their constituencies are not captured in the national budget.<br />

The lawmaker disclosed this during an interview on Channels TV that was anchored by Seun Okinbaloye.<br />
<br />
He said that it was legislative malpractice for a lawmaker to sit back and do nothing when a national budget that does not make provisions for his constituency is been appropriated.<br />
<br />
The Majority Leader said that in some advanced countries, budget- padding is not only practised but called ‘earmarking’ or ‘pump-up legislation.’<br />
<br />
He said that since the National Assembly holds the power to the national treasury, it will continue to scrutinize the level of budget-padding from the executive, stressing that it’s not a rubber stamp.<br />
<br />
<br />
Gbajabiamila said that since suspended Rep. Abdulmumuni Jibrin decided to take the issue of legislative budget padding to the law enforcement agencies, it was proper for the House to sit back and let them do whatever they want to do, adding that there was no regret over suspension of Jibrin, if indeed he was a true whistle-blower like he claimed to be.<br />

He said: “Abdulmumuni Jibrin did what he needed to do. He took the matter to the law enforcement agencies – the EFCC, the police and the rest of them. He has done his. The National Assembly does not agree with it. He put the ball in the court of the law enforcement agents. It is up to them to do whatever they want to do. I’m not aware of any padding. I don’t understand what that means.<br />
<br />
“When it comes to money and I represent a particular constituency but I look at the budget and I don’t see my constituency represented in that budget and I know that throughout the year people of my constituency have needs – they want this; they want that. It is only me they can talk to. They are not going to talk to the President.<br />
<br />
“I actually consider it as malpractice not padding, if during the budget circle I have opportunity to attract something to my constituency and I sit back and do nothing and go back in four years to seek for their mandate again when I promised them all these years that I will do this and do that. What do I go back and tell them? ‘Oh, I am not allowed to pad the budget.’<br />
<br />

“If for instance, I represent a constituency and a budget is sent to National Assembly. It is one of the most important pieces of legislation to come out of the National Assembly. By my representation, I should attract federal presence to my constituency.<br />
<br />
“Even in the most advanced of democracies, you have heard of earmarks, you have heard of pumped-up legislation. It is the same thing. It is done everywhere in the world otherwise you are not worth the sit you seat on.<br />
<br />
“Let me explain something to you about padding. That’s what Nigerians need to understand. It doesn’t mean that if you hear anything thing negative about the National Assembly and you are not objective. You will not understand what is going on.<br />
<br />

“Thank God we caught it early enough and the damage wasn’t so bad.. it basically burnt some of the stuff that was around it. So awards, portraits, and some small electronics. But thank God, Duke and I are alive and well. We only had to form James Bond and climb down from the top floor balcony LOL,” he wrote in an Instagram post.<br />

“Thank God for my neighbors and the amazing workers in and around the compound for helping us escape via the balcony, helping put out the fire, and helping with the aftermath/cleaning. No fewer than 25 people were on Monday feared dead on the ever-busy Owerri – Onitsha expressway in Imo State when two heavy duty trucks collided with two hummer buses.<br />

The tragedies happened at Catering school Junction and Okpokija Junction, respectively in Irete community in the Owerri West Local Government Area of the state between 4 and 4: 20 pm interval.<br />
<br />
An eyewitness who gave his name simply as MC T-Boy, an indigene of the community told our correspondent at the scene of one of the auto crashes that a commercial hummer bus filled with passengers from Onitsha to Owerri was crushed by the incoming heavy duty truck conveying empty containers when it tried to overtook it on the expressway .<br />
<br />
He said that the eighteen passengers on board, plus the driver and the conductor reportedly died on the spot as the truck folded the bus.<br />
<br />
According to the emotionally ridden eyewitness, as if the tragedy was not enough, another one occurred within a space of twenty minutes, this time, killing five persons on the spot, while several others were severely injured.<br />
<br />
The second crash which occurred at the Okpokija petroleum refilling station Junction on the same expressway, a one poll drive from the scene of the first disaster involved another big truck coming from Onitsha to the state capital and another hummer bus said to be conveying passengers from Lagos to Owerri which belonged to the Peace Mass Transit.<br />
<br />
He said that the second auto accident was allegedly as a result of the carelessness of the bus driver who chose to take a one-way drive instead of sticking to his own Lane.<br />
<br />
According to the eyewitness “when the first crash occurred, there was heavily traffic jam. All motorists were held in the traffic gridlocks as people rushed to rescue the accident victims. But instead of the bus driver to exercise Patience by waiting, he quickly took to a one-way drive without looking. His bus was immediately crushed by an incoming truck leading to five persons dying on the spot “.<br />
<br />
He said that it took the efforts of the indigenes of the community to come to the rescue of the few survivors by rushing them to the nearby hospitals for treatments.<br />
<br />
Our correspondent learnt that the buses and the heavy duty trucks had been evaluated from the expressway, paving way for free flow of traffics.<br />

Reacting to the development, the Office of the President of the Senate in a statement yesterday said it was “indeed delighted at the endorsement of the Senate President” by the social media giant, Facebook.<br />

According to the Special Assistant to the Senate President on New Media, Bamikole Omishore, “This commendation reinforces one of the core mandates of the Senate President to the New Media unit, which is to bridge the gap between the Senate and Nigerians.”<br />

“The Nigerian Senate facebook live streaming has an average view of four million unique clicks monthly for the plenary live feeds and we will be expanding coverage to courtesy calls, committee hearings and oversights in the next few months.<br />
<br />
“You would recall that Saraki personally attended the 2016 edition of the Social Media Week in company of Senators Foster Ogola, Dino Melaye and Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi amongst others, where he spoke on the topic: ‘Promoting Online Communities to improve Participatory Governance’ and subsequently had a no-holds-barred interaction with traditional and social media enthusiasts on how to continue bridging the gap between elected government officials and Nigerians passionate about the use of social media for political engagement.<br />

“Osinbajo is not the problem. There are people pushing this government for their own personal and selfish interests. Things are not working well because the people have not applied the proper measures and policies to propel the country out of recession.<br />

“What they are doing cannot end the recession. A budget during recession must be different from the one that should be operated when an economy is doing well.<br />
<br />
<br />
“This government cannot run the same type of economic policies that the Jonathan administration used because the times are not the same. This government needs the smartest people to run this economy. But the argument is that this government inherited the economic problems from the previous one and is, therefore, a child of circumstance.<br />
<br />
“No, that will not suffice anymore because if you recall, in 1999 when Obasanjo and Atiku took over the reins of power, they quietly recovered over $4 billion from those who had stolen money and put it in the system, and nobody heard about it.<br />
<br />
“I want you to know that the current recession is caused by a cabal working for their selfish interest and a gamut of poor economic policies and they are going to get worse because the brains that should run the economy are not there.<br />
<br />
“That is why Osinbajo must take charge of this economy because I want this government to succeed so that we can have something to take over in 2019. It is certain Nigerians will reject APC in 2019 and PDP is surely going to take over. We will beat APC any day, and they must leave.”
