Another fake medical doctor has been arrested in Abeokuta, Ogun State, a top government official has said.

Dr Sola Adebiyi, Director, Hospital Services, Ogun State Ministry of Health, told newsmen on Friday in Abeokuta that one Sunday Adeyeye was the sixth quack doctor  to be nabbed in the state. 
 
She added that Adeyeye had been practising with a forged certificate obtained from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Kaduna State. 
 
 
 
The director said that the culprit was arrested during the ongoing re-validation exercise of health facilities across the state. 
 
Adebiyi added that the arrest was made easier as the culprit unknowingly walked into his own doom at the re-validation venue at the ministry. 
 
The director said that the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Babatunde Ipaye, had made it mandatory for all private health facilities across the state to be re-validated and re-registered following incessant loss of lives by quacks. 
 
According to Adebiyi, the owner of the facility who unknowingly engaged the doctor, brought him for the re-validation of his hospital, where his fake certificate was discovered. 
 
“We were suspicious when the owner of Ganny-Hash Clinic and Maternity Hospital in Ifo, Mr Ganiyu Okewole, presented the said fake Dr Sunday Adeyeye’s certificate for re-validation of his facility. 
 
“We then asked him to bring the doctor in person which is one of our requirements for the exercise. 
 
“Going through the Ahmadu Bello University certificate he presented and comparing it with the ministry’s records, there we discovered he has been practicing with a forged certificate and we immediately called in the police to effect his arrest,’’ Adebiyi said. 
 
Responding to questions from newsmen, Adeyeye said he was not a doctor, that the ABU certificate was forged in his name in Zaria, adding that he has been working with the hospital since February 2017. 
 
Also speaking the proprietor of the affected clinic, Mr Ganiyu Okewole, said he was unaware of the doctor’s case. 
 
He said if he had not brought him for re-validation, he would not have known. 
 
NAN also reports that revalidation exercise started in January 2016. 
 
The task force has shut down 168 private health facilities since the commencement of the exercise in the state.

“It didn’t say whether those elected or not elected. Any person; to bring papers, memos, come with evidence, and that if such a person is summoned to come and testify or to come and answer questions and he refuses to come, under Section 5, the Branch of the National Assembly can order the Police to arrest and bring such a person.” 
 
He added that “the Senate President or the Speaker of the House of Representatives if satisfied that the person has entered into recognizance, they can release the person but if not satisfied, they can tell them to keep the person there.” 
 
He made his position known while speaking on Channels Television’s Breakfast show, Sunrise Daily. 
 
Mr Ozekhome’s view was however in contrast to that of his colleague, Mr Femi Falana, who believes that the Senate has no power to suspend a member even for a single day. 
 
The lawyers made the comments while addressing the Senate’s recent suspension of one of its members, Senator Ali Ndume, for allegedly bringing the House to disrepute, as well as the investigation and summoning of some of its members. 
 
“In matters regarding some of the distinguished Senators, the court has made definitive judicial pronouncements. No legislative House in Nigeria, can suspend a member for one single day and we have a plethora of authorities on this,” Mr Falana stressed.

Some soldiers invaded the office of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Maiduguri, Borno state capital, on Friday, to assist some young ladies register for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The officers who were unruly threatened to beat up anyone who did not follow their orders. 
 
Since the commencement of registration last week, hundreds of applicants have been trooping to the JAMB office, located opposite a Zenith Bank branch in the state capital, on a daily basis. 
 
Officials of the examination body had been attending to the candidates on a first-come-first-serve basis, until Friday’s invasion. 
 
Some of the affected candidates, who are residents of the ancient city, confirmed that some of the officers were having affairs with the candidates who brought them there. 
 
The soldiers were said to have harassed those who had been standing in queue for hours, because they failed to give way to their girlfriends to complete their registration. 
 
They also threatened to beat up the JAMB officials who did not cooperate with them. 
 
Zarah Musa, a frustrated applicant, narrated her experience to newsmen. 
 
“We were all in the queue when these soldiers arrived with many girls. They insisted that we give way for their girlfriends to complete their registration,” she said. 
 
“Initially we resisted but we had no choice than to comply when they threatened to beat us up, including the JAMB officials, who had been conducting the registration orderly. 
 
“Now, we are left under the scorching sun, while the soldiers are inside facilitating registration for their lovers.” 
 
Jummai Amidu, another applicant, corroborated Musa’s claim. 
 
She said the whole process had turned into “soldiers’ affair”, wondering the fate of those who do not have soldiers as boyfriends. 
 
When newsmen contacted JAMB officials to hear their own side of the story, they declined to speak, saying they were not authorised to comment on the issue. 
 
Calls put to Sani Usman, spokesman of the army, did not connect, as his telephone line was out of reach. 
 
A top military source said Usman was at the closing ceremony of the Small Arms Competition in Sambisa forest.

1.Jacob Sogboyega Odulate aka Blessed Jacob was born into a polygamous family in 1884. 
 
2.He was originally from Ikorodu in Lagos State but later moved to the neighbouring Ogun State. 
 
3.At age 14, he trekked for three months from Ikorodu before reaching Abeokuta to establish himself. 
 
4. Blessed Jacob managed to create a brand from what served as his consulting room and workshop in Abeokuta. His modest headquarters was at the Sapon Area, not far from where he later built his famous three-storey building in Ijemo Agbadu. 
 
5.In 1918, he invented the legendary Alabukun powder which is now a hit in the world’s most populous nation and in other West African nations. 
 
6.He sent his children to study at some of the best universities in Durham, Newcastle, United States of America and London. e.g Mrs. Folake Odulate (later to become Chief. Mrs. Folake Solanke) who is the first female lawyer in Nigeria to wear the silk and she also became the first female Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). In 1966, she established the first law firm by a Nigerian female at Ibadan, Oyo State and named it Alabukun Chambers in honour of her great father. 
 
7. Apart from making the drugs, the energetic Blessed Jacob also produced other brands like Alabukun mentholine, other preparations and an annual journal called Alabukun Almanac which was widely distributed in Abeokuta and eventually all over Nigeria between the 1920s and 1950s.

Authorities in Nepal have launched a hunt for a man-eating tiger that killed two women in a month and a half in areas near the Asian country’s largest national park, officials said on Friday.

A team of 20 officials, including forest rangers and veterinarians, along with six elephants have been deployed in the dense forest of Chitwan National Park in south-central Nepal, Nurendra Aryal, the protected area’s official, said. 
 
“We received a letter from the district forest office of Nawalparasi, which requested us to capture the animal after it killed two women in the area,” Aryal said. 
 
In mid-February, the tiger killed a 60-year-old woman, who was in the forest collecting fodder for her livestock. 
 
Last week, the tiger pounced upon a 61-year-old woman in the same area, where she was also gathering fodder. 
 
Aryal said the team hadn’t been able to capture the big cat despite placing two calves in its habitat as prey; the animal has also killed dozens of livestock in the area. 
 
Human-wild animal conflict has significantly increased in recent years in Nepal, home to 200 endangered Royal Bengal tigers. 
 
In early February, police shot dead a wild tiger after it injured nine people, including four policemen, near a national park in south-western Nepal.

A Nigerian soldier, Sunday Umaru, has been dragged before a Barkin-Ladi High Court in Plateau, for allegedly killing his lover, Charity Thomas, over a phone call.

Mr. Umaru, a married man, was a private in the Nigerian Army and on posting at the Special Task Force (STF), sector 7, Barkin-Ladi, at the time of the incident, on January 23, 2016. 
 
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the hearing, scheduled for March 30, could not hold due to the absence of Justice Samson Gang. 
 
Mr. Umaru was first arraigned on July 14, 2016 on a one-count charge of culpable homicide. 
He was accused of killing his lover Ms. Thomas by stabbing her with a knife in the stomach and slaughtering her thereafter. Mr. Umaru attacked the woman who had arrived from Kaduna to visit him. 
 
According to the prosecutor, W.T Awe, of the Plateau State Ministry of Justice, the accused person committed the crime on January 23, 2016 in Barkin-Ladi. 
 
Mr. Awe, during the arraignment, told the court that the Nigeria Army had court-martialed the accused, dismissed him after they found him guilty, and handed him over to the police for prosecution. 
 
He said the accused person had told the police, in a confessional statement, that the deceased visited him sometime in January 2016, after which they had a misunderstanding which led to her death. 
 
 
“In the statement, the accused alleged that the deceased used a kitchen knife to stab herself after which he (accused), removed the knife and `helped’ her to complete the act by slaughtering her,” Mr. Awe stated. 
 
Mr. Awe further quoted the accused as saying that he was in the sitting room while Ms. Thomas was in the kitchen at about 7 p.m. when the woman’s phone rang and he picked the call. 
 
The accused, in the statement, said that a man’s voice insisted on speaking with Ms. Thomas, but that he (accused) demanded to know who he (caller) was. 
 
He claimed that instead of answering his inquiries, the voice rained insults on him. 
 
Mr. Umaru, according to the statement, dropped the call, went to the kitchen and asked Ms. Thomas who the caller was, but the woman refused to provide answers to his questions, instead reminding Mr. Umaru that he was a married man. 
 
The accused further claimed that Ms. Thomas, in a fit of anger, called off the relationship and declared that she was no more interested, especially since her parents had consistently warned her against the affair. 
 
“Umaru said that he got angry and slapped her, which angered Charity, who quickly picked a knife and stabbed herself in the stomach,” Mr. Awe told the court. 
 
The statement further indicated that Charity failed down thereafter, with the accused removing the knife from her stomach and slaughtering her “to complete the job she started”. 
 
Mr. Umaru thereafter took her body outside, left it there and reported for duty at 8 p.m. 
The prosecutor said the accused, from his duty point, went to see his family at the Maxwell Kobe Cantonment, Rukuba Barracks, after telling his boss that his wife wanted to see him over “a very pressing issue”. 
 
“Charity’s lifeless body was found the next day by neighbours, while military men, who came to evacuate the body, trailed the blood marks to the accused person’s house. 
 
“Friends of the accused also recognised the girl as Umaru’s lover, who was seen with him the previous day,” Mr. Awe told the court. 
 
He said a team of military men, mobilised to go after the accused, arrested him at his home in the barracks, while in the company of his family. 
 
According to Mr. Awe, the accused was court-martialed by the military and dismissed, after which he was handed over to the police for prosecution. 
 
He said during investigation, police discovered several gory pictures and videos of the deceased that the accused took in his phone, immediately after the murder. 
 
The accused has, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. 
 
NAN reports that at his first appearance in July 2016, Mr. Umaru’s counsel, David Adudu, prayed the court to grant his client bail, citing section 36(5) of the 1999 constitution which says that an accused is presumed innocent until otherwise proven. 
 
 
Mr. Adudu had added that if the bail was granted, his client would neither jump bail nor interfere with police investigation. 
 
Justice Samson Gang admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N200, 000 and two sureties in like sum. 
 
Mr. Gang, who ordered that the sureties must reside within the jurisdiction of the court, said they must submit two copies of their recent passport photographs, copies of their national ID cards, GCE certificates and copies of their Rights of Occupancy. 
 
He thereafter adjourned the matter to March 30, for hearing. 
 
NAN reports that with the judge not available to hear the case, the matter was adjourned to May 25.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibadan zonal office, Oyo State, on Thursday said a herbalist had been arrested by its operatives for falsely obtaining N45m from a victim under the pretext of offering herbal and spiritual healing.

A statement from the EFCC Head of Public Affairs in the zone, Ayo Oyewole, said the suspect, Aminat Okiribiti, 34, committed the crime with two other accomplices at large, one of who is said to be her husband. 
 
The statement said, “Aminat (Okiribiti) was arrested for an alleged case of conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretences.  In a rehash of the old infamous advance fee fraud tactic of spiritual help and solution to all problems, a victim recounted her ordeal in the hands of a syndicate to our operatives, signalling a warning to the public. 
 
“Aminat, alongside other three cohorts still at large, conspired, using the decoy of providing cure and spiritual solution to the health challenges of the victim’s children and fleeced her of the sum of N45m. 
 
“Aminat, who is married to one Wande Okiribiti, 47, who is still at large, confessed that some of the money obtained from the victim was collected through her (Aminat’s) bank account domiciled in one of the new generation banks located in Ibadan.” 
 
The statement said Aminat and the victim met sometime in October 2014, at Utako, Abuja, adding that the suspect would be charged to court at the end of investigation.

The Federal High Court Abuja, on Friday granted former Interior Minister, Abba Moro, permission to travel abroad for medical checkup. Moro was granted similar permission on July 14, 2016 to travel for medical treatment.

The former minister is standing trial over alleged N676 million Nigeria Immigration Service recruitment scam. When the matter was called up for hearing, counsel to Moro, Mr Akinlolu Kehinde (SAN) told the court that the application for leave to travel again was to follow up on the earlier treatment. 
 
“There is an urgent need for him to go for a follow up checkup on his health as he was given an appointment for April 26.” 
 
Kehinde said to achieve this, his client was praying the court for an order permitting him to travel to Dubai for three weeks and an order directing the release of his international passport. 
 
The lawyer said that he attached a 24- paragraph affidavit in support of his application. 
 
He said that the last time the court granted his client leave to travel, he promptly returned to face his trial on completion of his treatment. Although the prosecuting counsel, Mr Steven Odiase did not oppose the application, he urged the court to attach conditions since Moro was granted bail on self-recognition. 
 
The judge, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, granted Moro the permission to travel, but ordered him to provide a letter of undertaking from a surety with landed property in Abuja. Alternatively, the court asked his counsel to guarantee him, that he would come back to face his trial. 
 
“I am disposed to granting the application in favour of the applicant because the reason is a follow up to the earlier treatment. “However, considering the concerns raised by the complainant, I will impose some conditions,” Dimgba said. He adjourned the case till May 18 and 19 for resumption of trial. 
 
Moro alongside two others are on trial over alleged N676 million Nigeria Immigration 2014 recruitment fraud.

A 30-year-old man, Sunday Ngene, who allegedly stabbed a trader with cutlass and defecated in his shop, was on Friday docked at the Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

Ngene, a resident of Agege Area, a suburb of Lagos, is standing trial on a three-count charge of indecent acts, threatening violence and assault. 
 
The prosecutor, Insp. Raji Akeem, told the court that the accused pleaded not guilty to the offences he committed on March 7 at No. 92, Ipaja Road, Oke-Koto, Agege. 
 
Akeem said the accused assaulted James Edeoga by stabbing him with a cutlass on the hand. 
 
The prosecutor said Ngene attempted to buy some goods from the complainant, but when Edeoga refused to sell to him, the accused defecated in his shop and rubbed it on some of the complainant’s goods. 
 
 
 
Akeem said when the complainant tried to confront the accused, he attacked the complainant with a cutlass. 
 
Magistrate T.O. Shomade granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum. 
 
The sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two-year tax payment to the Lagos State Government. 
 
The magistrate adjourned hearing in the case till April 10.

Gov. Nasiru El-Rufa’i of Kaduna State, on Friday pledged to provide protection and welfare support to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state.

The governor made the pledge in Kaduna on Friday when the State NYSC Coordinator, Mr Bello Ballama visited the Government House. 
 
El-Rufa’i, who was represented by his Deputy, Mr Barnabas Bala, said that the state government had placed high premium on the protection of the lives and property of the corps members. 
 
According to him, the government will also support the NYSC in carrying out its mandate especially in providing vital skills to corps members to be self reliant. 
 
He said that the government, which recently received the award of best state in the ease of doing business in the country, would continue to motivate its youths to acquire skills for their economic empowerment. The governor stressed that providing skills to the youths would help reduce unemployment and facilitate opening up of new businesses. 
 
Earlier, the NYSC state coordinator, Mr Bello Ballama appreciated the state government support to the welfare of corps members, and assured that the scheme would continue to contribute to the speedy development of the state. 
 
According to him, that NYSC is a vital instrument of human capital development in the country. He said that over 80 per cent of corps members serving in the state were deployed to the education sector. 
 
Ballama added that the scheme had also provided critical manpower in the health sector, especially in rural areas. The coordinator urged the government to support the state NYSC office with utility vehicles, ambulance and accommodation for its senior officials.

Their annual study titled, “Football Clubs’ Valuation: The European Elite”, estimated Madrid and United as being worth €2.9billion at the end of the 2015-16 season. 
 
Barcelona are third, and valued at €2.8bn, ahead of Bayern Munich which is rated at €2.2bn. 
 
Arsenal (€1.7bn) complete the top five, with the next three places occupied by Manchester City (€1.6bn), Chelsea (€1.5bn) and Liverpool (€1.3bn).

“It’s a study that associates several criteria,” KPMG Head of Sports Network Jean-Luc Leroux said.

No life was reported lost in the fire which started around 9 a.m. 
 
Dr Kenneth Ugbala, Senior Special Assistant to Gov. David Umahi on Internal Security, told newsmen that it took the combined efforts of workers and the State Fire Service to put out the fire. 
“The fire outbreak was caused by a faulty electrical connection within the accounts section and the level of damage was minimal. 
 
“An upholstery and cottons within the section were completely burnt and we would ascertain the true extent of damage when the fire service concludes its task,’’ he said. 
 
An eye-witness, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, told newsmen that the fire started with a thick fume emanating from the accounts section. 
 
“The shouts for help attracted workers who used improvised items such as water and detergent to put out the fire before the arrival of firemen,” she said. 
 
Mr James Owoh, the state Chief Fire Officer, said that his officers promptly responded to the distress call from the Government House. 
 
“We have always been responsive to distress calls and Government House officials acknowledged that the situation was promptly put under control,” Owoh said.

This time, it was the Federal High Court in Rivers State that denied the daughter of the former governor of Oyo State and remanded her in prison after a Magistrate Court had granted her bail. 
 
However, charges against the Port Harcourt-based publisher, Samuel Walson, were dropped.

Prospective candidates for the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination, on Thursday protested in Makurdi, Benue State over their inability to register.

They blocked some major roads in the city, as they marched to JAMB’s office located along Inner Ring Road. The candidates also took their complaints to the Governor’s Office at Benue People’s House. 
 
 
The protesters threw stones at the JAMB office before mobile policemen dispersed them. 
 
According to The Guardian, the candidates claimed they were unable to process their registration at the Computer Based Test centres (CBTs), due to insufficient facilities. 
 
They urged the Federal Government to revert to the old system of registration. 
 
The State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Dennis Ityavyar, who addressed them at the Government House, also pleaded with the JAMB Registrar, to open more centres to enable them to register for the examination. 
 
 
It is understood that it takes three to seven days for a candidate to be fully registered, depending on the efficiency of the Internet connection. 
 
JAMB Director of Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, in a statement insisted that the board “would continue all its examinations with the CBT mode, as it was already consolidating on the gains earlier recorded”.

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the immediate deployment of four out of the newly appointed Ambassadors-Designate.

This was disclosed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, on Friday. 
 
 
According to him, three out of the four will assume office with the United Nations in New York and Geneva, while the other one will represent Nigeria in the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. 
 
The four appointed Ambassador-Designates are as follows: 
 
1. Professor Tijjani Bande, (Kebbi State) to proceed as Nigeria’s Ambassador/Representative to the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the United Nations Headquarters in New York; 
 
2. Itegboje Sunday Samson (Edo State) to proceed as Nigeria’s Ambassador/Deputy Representative, Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the United Nations Headquarters in New York; 
 
 
3. Kadiri Ayinla Audu, (Kwara State) to proceed as Nigeria’s Ambassador/Representative to the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the United Nations Offices in Geneva;

When President Muhammadu Buhari famously said on May 29, 2015 that he belonged to everybody and to nobody, the public went into a frenzy of interpretations of his philosophical words. 
 
<a name='more' id="more"></a>Clearly, what he said was a code. It meant something that we did not understand and which he did not bother to explain. How could he, our Sai Baba, who belonged to us during the campaign and to whom we belonged during the voting process, now come out and say publicly that he belonged to nobody after winning the elections? Something was quite wrong from the onset. We didn’t get it. Did these coded words apply to his family, his political associates, to the known sponsors of his victory, to the alliance of political parties that came together to ensure his victory or to the public? It was anybody’s guess. Whether he has acted on or is acting on those words is also anyone’s guess. As with many other important issues haunting our lives, some Nigerians made a sick joke of the President’s declaration and everyone moved on. 
 
Mr. Buhari also said he was going to allow all the other arms of government do their jobs while he would focus on his. He was neither going to interfere nor influence decision-making either at the Senate or the House of Representatives. He acted on these words. He let the election process of the Senate leadership pervert itself to produce the current leadership to the indignation of Nigerians. Nigerians expected some reaction, some political maneuver to undo this aberration, but this never came. Mr. Buhari let it ride. And what we have been seeing on the television are joint prayer sessions with the leadership of the Senate, smiles, hand-holding, hilarious laughter and visiting between the President and the Senate leadership here in Nigeria and in London. Further, the President appears to be indifferent to the press exposures of the reprehensible actions of some members of his kitchen cabinet with links to the Senate leadership. It appears that some sinister pre-prepared script is being acted out by the combo of the Senate and the Executive. It is difficult to think that what we are seeing are spontaneous dramas. What we have been seeing in the past two years is antithetical to the persona of whom we thought we voted for. 
 
Our President said, “I belong to everybody and to nobody!” This is not original. It belongs in Jean Jacques Rousseau’s treatise on the Social Contract. Mr. Buhari must have read it severally after he lost the previous elections. And he acted out some of the clauses of the Social Contract in order for him to win the 2015 elections. Hear Rousseau: “…as men cannot engender new forces, but only unite and direct existing ones, they have no other means of preserving themselves than the formation, by aggregation, of a sum of forces great enough to overcome the resistance. These they have to bring into play by means of a single motive power, and cause to act in concert. This sum of forces can arise only where several persons come together…….. each man, in giving himself to all, gives himself to nobody; and as there is no associate over whom he does not acquire the same right as he yields others over himself, he gains an equivalent for everything he loses, and an increase of force for the preservation of what he has.” Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong in forming alliances to overcome an obstacle or to reach an objective. What can be very wrong is if the objective is personal at the expense of a trusting nation rather than for common good or if the alliance is with people of questionable character. 
 
Our President did not need to tell us that he belonged to everybody and to nobody. It was not necessary. We already have a binding social contract with him in our constitution. So he could not possibly be referring to the Nigerian public that voted him in. Who then was he talking to? To whom was he quoting Jean Jacques Rousseau in his public discourse? Mr. President needs to explain this to Nigerians. 
 
That Mr. Buhari formed an alliance with other political parties to oust Goodluck Jonathan and his PDP is a fact in public domain. But we do not know what other alliances the President engaged in. That Mr. Buhari seems to have parted ways with other political parties has been widely reported. What about these other hidden alliances? Recent belligerence of the Senate leadership (despite the exposures of their moral baggage) towards the person of Mr. Buhari and his seeming helplessness tell a big story. It is terrifying that this belligerence is not based on any principles but on trivia that border on demand for respect from the President. Rousseau says “there is no associate over whom he does not acquire the same right as he yields others over himself….” In other words, the Senate leadership demands respect as per the conditions of an agreement between equals. What is the nature of this contract that seems to render our president a ghost of the supposed man of steel we voted for? This has nothing to do with our Constitution or with separation of powers; our Constitution does not allow for trivialities. 
 
The Social Contract between the President and the people of Nigeria far outweighs any other contract that the President might have engaged in, in the course of seeking the presidency. The people take precedence over alliances. Mr. Buhari has to boldly move out of unholy alliances that tie his hands while the people are still solidly behind him. What History will say of you as the President is much more than winning a second term. 
 
The president should come out and tell us that “He belongs to everyone – to us, the people” and leave the VIP nobodies to lick their wounds. 
 
I hope President Muhammadu Buhari reads this.

Prof. Aloysius Okolie of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has applauded the Senate for slamming a six-month suspension on Sen. Ali Ndume for bringing the upper house into disrepute.

Okolie, of the Department of Political Science, gave the commendation in an interview with newsmen in Nsukka on Friday. He said it was wrong for Ndume to call for the probe of his colleagues in the senate based on what he read in the newspapers without verifying the facts. 
 
“As a distinguished senator, he should not talk like ordinary man on the street; he must have facts and figures before casting aspersion on anybody. 
 
“He claimed he read about the alleged certificate forgery of Sen. Dino Melaye and importation of bullet proof Range Rover SUV by the Senate President in newspapers. 
 
“That is not enough to blackmail the Senate. “Ndume should have gone further to carry out a personal investigation to verify if the allegations are true or false before jumping into conclusion,” Okolie said. 
 
According to him, the Senate followed due process by investigating the two allegations through its Privileges and Ethics Committee before bringing its sledge hammer on Ndume. 
 
“If the two allegations are true, Nigerians and the world would have celebrated Ndume as one who brought the issue to the floor; but now they are false, so he should also bear the consequences. 
 
“This is good lesson for whistle blowers; there is nothing wrong in blowing the whistle, but you must ensure you have facts and figures of what you are saying. 
 
“It’s unfortunate that Ndume’s suspension will deny Borno South Senatorial District a voice in Senate for six months. 
 
“But it will also provide opportunity for his people to assess if he has given the district effective representation,” he said. On the call by the upper house on President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the Acting Chairman of EFCC, Mr Ibrahim Magu, Okolie urged the president to nominate a replacement for Magu. 
 
“If I am Mr President, I will nominate another person as EFCC chairman and give Magu another appointment to avert further row with the Senate,’’ he said.

A group under the aegis of Stand up for Nigeria (SUN), has asked the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to resign. This is after the suspension of former senate leader, Ali Ndume by members of the parliament.

The group made the call in a statement signed by the national president, Sunday Attah in Abuja. 
 
Attah said the group is aimed at reclaiming the Senate from Saraki and his supporters and return it back to the people of Nigeria. 
 
The group condemned the suspension of Senator Ali Ndume and insisted that the Senate carry out screening of resident electoral commissioners (RECs) as it is their constitutional role that must be carried out. 
 
Attah said they had scheduled 3 days rally at the Freedom Park in Lagos or Unity Fountain, Abuja next week. 
 
The group said: “The Stand Up 4 Nigeria (SUN) which is the ray of hope and light to our generation is therefore calling on all well meaning Nigerians to join us as we reclaim the Senate from Saraki and his boys and return it back to the people of Nigeria. 
 
“We are also calling on those outside the seats of power to rise in their respective state capitals on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. 
 
“No individual entity or group of persons should ever take the Nigerian people for a ride any longer.” 
 
In a similar vein, another group, the Citizens Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights (CASER), had on Thursday threatened to drag the Nigerian Senate to court if it fails within 48 hours to rescind the suspension of Senator Ndume. 
 
The executive director of the organisation, Frank Tietie, gave the ultimatum in Abuja.

Kwame Baffoe, Supervisor of the Task Force on the Retrieval of State Assets made this know that the popular artisite will be arrested, charged and prosecuted for stealing a state vehicle. 
 
Dumelo, 33, had sent one of the cars, black V8 Toyota Land Cruiser with registration number GE 8118-16 to a workshop in Abelempke, Accra for total rebranding when National Security Operatives pounced on it. 
 
But the Supervisor of the Task Force said Dumelo will be arraigned before court for attempting to rebrand the state vehicle. 
 
Baffoe said "the officers involved, we have the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) [and] the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), they are building a docket on that and at the appropriate time, he will be arraigned before court. He should be charged for theft because this is a criminal offence." 
 
According to reports, one of the vehicles is a Toyota Land Cruiser V8. After the state officials cross-checked the chassis number (VIN number), the car was state-owned.

The police have arrested a minister with the Mountain of Fire Ministries, Mr Franklin Chinedu for allegedly defrauding a widow of her husband’s gratuity.

According to P.M.EXPRESS  the widow,  Charity Onje Isaac, was deceived through a false prophecy and lost the N850,000 she was paid by her late husband’s employer, Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria. 
 
Charity said Chinedu prophesied that he was divinely authorised and directed to collect the money from her and she obediently complied before she realised that she had been duped. 
 
The incident happened at Biliaminu Close, at the Oke-Afa area of Isolo. 
 
She went back to the pastor’s apartment only to discover that he had packed away from there. 
 
The widow explained that she met Chinedu who told her about the death of her husband and the gratuity. 
 
He also told the woman that serious prayer was needed to be done so that FAAN could release her husband’s money. 
 
She said when the money was eventually released, Chinedu invited her and told her that God said she should give him the money. 
 
Charity said she did not know what came over her as she handed the money over to him. 
 
She said she realised what happened when she had no money to feed the family, and she started looking for the pastor and then reported what happened to the church. 
 
The matter was reported to the police at Ejigbo division who arrested Chinedu and charged him to court for fraud. 
 
Chinedu who hails from Iseke in Ideato in Imo State said he prayed for the woman and the money was paid and he borrowed the money from her but was unable to raise money to pay her back. 
 
When Chinedu was arraigned, he pleaded not guilty. 
 
The presiding Magistrate, Mr Akeem Fashola, granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two  sureties in like sum. 
 
He was remanded in prison custody pending when he will perfect his bail. 
 
The matter was adjourned till 26 April 2017.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has suspended two of its officers for alleged involvement in oil theft in Bayelsa.

The corps sp‎okesman, Emmanuel Okeh, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja. 
 
Mr. Okeh said the management of the Corps condemned the alleged possession of illegal petroleum products suspected to be diesel (AGO) by two officers of the Corps who were recently arrested and presented to journalists by the police. 
 
He said the‎ ‎Commandant-General of the Corps, Abdullahi Muhammadu, had set up a panel of inquiry to investigate the matter for proper action to be taken in line with the public service rules. 
 
According to him, the affected personnel, Assistant Superintendents of Corps (ASCI) Agah Utavie, and Angel Kilosomewo, ‎had been suspended from the service until investigations were concluded.‎ 
He said the Commandant-General of the Corps, Abdullahi Muhammadu, had therefore warned officers and men of the Corps to desist from such act or face the full wrath of the law. 
 
NAN reports that the police had on March 23 presented to journalists two officers of the NSCDC for allegedly dealing in suspected illegally refined diesel in Otuasegha area of Yenagoa, Bayelsa. 
 
The police‎ spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, had said that the suspects were arrested by the Inspector-General of Police (I-G’s) Special Task Force on March 7. ‎ 
 
Mr. Moshood said their office had been informed and that the police investigating team was awaiting their response to conclude investigation into the case and arraign them in court.

Leader of the MASSOB-Biafran Independence Movement, BIM, in Enugu North zone, Chief James Omeke, while speaking to the press, during the mobilization and sensitization of the new members from Igbo Etiti, revealed that their numbers are rising daily. 
 
 
Chief Omeke said that the new members were taught that non-violence would earn them their sovereignty. 
 
Omeke further explained that the regional administrator of Igbo Etiti, Jude Elugwu with other members traveled the entire Igbo Etiti to sensitize people and recruit new members. 
 
He said, “We see the recent mobilization and sensitization of people of Igbo Etiti region as very successful as we now have in our fold traditional rulers and about 200 new committed members enlisted into MASSOB-BIM. 
 
“I cannot reveal the identity of the traditional rulers because it is not in my power to do so. Our national leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike will do that when the time is ripe. 
 
 
“We told them that our national leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike had taken the matter up to the level of United Nations (UN), intimating them of his plans to carve out Biafra from Nigeria. 
 
“The mobilization of new members witnessed a large turnout of people from twelve villages. We conscientised our new members on why MASSOB-BIM remained non -confrontational, we told them how we intend to actualize Biafra without a single gunshot. 
 
“Our message to them is Biafra, our weapon, is non-violence.”

Human waste was last week found in Coca-Cola cans in a bottling factory in Lisburn, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland.

Following the discovery of faeces in the cans, Coca-Cola had no choice but to suspend night-time processing. 
 
The beverage giant said that all the affected cans have been impounded and that the contamination did not affect any products that were on sale. 
 
The police service of Northern Ireland said it had opened an inquiry into how faeces ended up in the cans at the Helllenic Bottling Company factory. 
 
“Detectives are investigating an incident at commercial premises in the Lisburn area following reports that a consignment of containers delivered to the premises had been contaminated,” said a PSNI spokesperson. 
 
“The investigation is at an early stage and there are no further details available at this time.” 
 
Coca-Cola said it values the safety and quality of its products and that it was taking the matter “extremely seriously”. 
 
“We are aware of an incident involving empty cans at our plant in Knockmore Hill, Lisburn. We are treating this matter extremely seriously and are conducting a thorough investigation in co-operation with the PSNI,” said the company. 
 
“The problem was identified immediately through our robust quality procedures and all of the product from the affected production was immediately impounded and will not be sold. This is an isolated incident and does not affect any products currently on sale.”

Speaking on Sunrise Daily, a Channels TV programme, on Friday, Falana said it was incorrect to say that Ibrahim Magu could not remain as the acting chairman of the EFCC because he was rejected by the senate. 
 
The lawyer said that according to section 171 of the constitution, the president does not need to ask for confirmation of some appointments. 
 
He explained that the senate could only confirm ambassadors and heads of foreign mission as provided for in section 171 subsection 2 of the constitution. 
 
The senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN) said the executive is not on the receiving end of sound legal counsel while adding that the 8th senate may expose the national assembly to “unfathomable ridicule”. 
 
“To be honest with you, I sympathise with the senate because if care is not taken, these set of senators will have the end of the day expose the national assembly to such unfathomable ridicule,” Falana said. 
 
“It will be unfortunate, a tragedy to the country, every public officer has his or her power defined by the constitution. The moment you go outside that you have engaged in impunity. Section 171 of the constitution has vested the power in the president to appoint any person to that office or act in that office and the duration is not specified. 
 
“Of all the positions listed there, positions to be occupied by public officers without any reference to the senate – secretary to the government of the federation, permanent secretaries, head of service and heads of extra-ministerial departments like the EFCC and the ICPC. 
 
“With profound respect, in sending the letter to the senate for confirmation, the president relied on section 2 subsection 3 of the EFCC Act but that section has to be read subject to the constitution. 
 
“So if you do that, section 171 takes precedence over section 2 subsection 3 of the EFCC Act. So does the president need to ask for confirmation? No. 
 
“Unfortunately, the executive is not exposed to sound legal advice on this matter, with profound respect. In that section 171, subsection 2, you also have position of ambassadors and heads of our foreign missions. But that subsection says they shall be confirmed by the senate.” 
 
He said since the national assembly was already working on an alteration of the constitution, the senators could effect amendments to “the limitations of their powers under the constitution”. 
 
Falana said after such amendments had been effected, the senators could then refuse to entertain a rejected nominee. 
 
“But in the case of the others, there is no provision for confirmation. So assuming that interpretation is even wrong, once you refuse to confirm, that does not annul the acting capacity of an officer,” he said.

The founding partner of Brazilian investment group DIS, Delcir Sonda, has accused Barcelona star Neymar and his family of being “traitors,” insisting that the Brazil playmaker cannot be a role model to children for what he’s done.

The investment group owned a substantial stake in Neymar when he was sold from Santos to Barcelona for upwards of €86 million in the summer of 2013, but were allegedly shorted in the deal because part of the fee was allegedly concealed by Barcelona, Santos and the company run by Neymar’s parents. 
 
DIS filed a complaint afterward. And now, after losing a recent appeal, Neymar and those involved will stand trial on corruption charges relating to the transfer. 
 
Speaking for the first time publicly, Sonda slammed Neymar and his family for their “betrayal.” 
 
Sonda said, “He can’t be an example to our children.” 
 
“We trusted Neymar. We were brought in by his father and [his agent] Wagner Ribeiro in 2008 and we negotiated. 
 
“We participated in the auction to buy this boy. Kia [Joorabchian] wanted to take him to Chelsea. But I invested in him, in his future, we bet on him before his professional debut. 
 
“We invested R$5.5 million [€1.63m], we made friends with the family, we paid for trips to London for his dad and Jerusalem for the family. How can this kid say he doesn’t know me? I was stabbed in the back.” 
 
Recall that Neymar moved to Barcelona for €86 million in the summer of 2013. 
 
“We trusted his word. I am a serious businessman, not a traitor. I only invested for the good of sport. Sincerely, to enter into a farce like this. 
 
“We are serious and we invest in social, kids, the elderly. We started from the bottom and got here with a lot of sweat. 
 
“He visited my family’s home and I attended his, I was betrayed by Neymar, his dad and his mum. Neymar, his parents and Barcelona designed a scam. 
 
“Fake contracts, secret lawyers. DIS was a victim of stellionate and private corruption, according to Spanish law. 
 
“I want justice!” 
 
Sonda said it was difficult to bring a lawsuit against Neymar, and that he still feels grief after making the decision. 
 
“Corruption is spreading in Brazil, and in football also. I never thought we would have to open a criminal action against a boy that I think much of. I am very sad and annoyed,” he said. 
 
“I invested and believed in his family. We had barbeques, we had a suite at the Vila [Santos’ stadium] just for them. I think I did everything I could for this boy. And now, from the bottom of my heart, I feel grief.”</div>

Nigerian defender Ola Aina is in danger of missing out on an English Premier League winners' medal this season if Chelsea win the title this season.

The English Premier League rules state that players need to make a minimum of five appearances to qualify for a medal after the threshold was lowered from 10 ahead of the 2012/13 campaign. 
 
Aina, who only on Monday featured for the Super Eagles team in an unofficial friendly at the Hive Stadium, is among the eight players that could miss out on a winners' medal according to the requirements stipulated.

A federal high court in Abuja has voided the 2015 constitution of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA).

The court gave the order on Thursday in a suit filed by Supo Ojo, a lawyer, challenging the procedure of amending the said constitution. 
 
Abubakar Mahmoud was elected president of the association in July 2016 on the strength of the voided constitution. 
 
The court order de-legitimises his leadership because he emerged president of the NBA on the voided constitution. 
 
It also implies that all appointments he has made are invalid. 
 
Also, his recommendation of senior lawyers to the National Judicial Council (NJC) for appointment as judges is now invalid. 
 
It was gathered that the general council of the bar will now have to take over the administration of the association, and that a fresh election may now be conducted under a constitution passed by a resolution of members in 2001. 
 
Speaking with newsmen on Friday, Muritala Abdulrasheed, media aide of the NBA president, said the judgment affects all decisions the body had taken since 2010 – and not the just the election of the president. 
 
He, however, added that there was no injunction removing Mahmoud as NBA president.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Thursday alerted the public of adulterated petroleum products.

NNPC Group General Manager, Public Affairs Division, said caution by consumers could forestall explosion, knockdown of engines, equipment or any such other ugly incidents leading to death or injuries. 
 
“The call for caution becomes necessary following reports that products from vandalised pipelines, or adulterated products are being sold to unsuspecting members of the public”, he noted. 
 
“This has led to untoward incidents involving consumers of petroleum products in parts of the country. 
 
“When in doubt of the quality of a purchase, consumers are advised to seek assistance from any offices of the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, NNPC depots or offices nationwide. 
 
“Products from NNPC depots are subjected to strict quality control to ensure that they are fit for use,’’ he said. 
 
Ughamadu urged motorists and other consumers of petroleum products to desist from panic buying.

The Government of the United Kingdom (UK) has deported 23 Nigerians for committing immigration-related offences in the country.

The deportees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMlA) Lagos at about 6.a.m on Friday. 
The deportees, who are all males, were brought back in a chartered aircraft. DSP Joseph Alabi, the Spokesman of the Lagos Airport Police Command, confirmed the development. 
 
The deportees were received by officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), and the Police. 
 
Also on ground to receive them were officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). 
 
The deportees were profiled by immigration authorities and given stipends to facilitate their transportation to their respective states. 
 
The Italian Government on March 8, deported 37 Nigerians from the country for similar reasons.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has commended the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), for recent foreign exchange policy actions.

The Naira has continued to firm against the dollar, in defiance of predictions by some experts, that it would sink to N1,000 to a dollar by the second quota of the year. 
 
IMF has now applauded the tactic used by the apex bank to stabilize the Naira. 
 
“Directors underscored that external adjustment is necessary to protect foreign currency buffers and reduce vulnerabilities. 
 
“They commended the recent easing of some exchange restrictions and urged the authorities to remove the remaining restrictions and multiple currency practices, thus unifying the foreign exchange market and helping regain investor confidence. 
 
 
“Directors emphasized that these policies should be supported by tighter monetary policy and fiscal consolidation to anchor inflation expectations and to limit the risk of exchange rate overshooting, as well as structural reforms to improve competitiveness. 
 
“Directors welcomed the steps to strengthen banking sector resilience through stronger prudential requirements. With asset quality declining, they recommended further intensifying bank monitoring, enhancing contingency planning, and strengthening resolution frameworks. Directors encouraged quickly increasing the capital of undercapitalized banks and putting a time limit on regulatory forbearance. 
 
“Directors emphasized that ambitious structural reforms are key to achieving a competitive, investment-driven economy that is less dependent on oil. Priority should be given to improving infrastructure, enhancing the business environment, improving access to financing for small enterprises, and strengthening governance and anti-corruption efforts. 
“Timely and effective implementation of these measures would promote sustainable and inclusive growth. Directors welcomed progress in improving the quality and availability of economic statistics and encouraged further efforts to compile subnational fiscal accounts,” IMF said in a statement.

A senator is the subject of a massive probe for not executing N4 billion contracts awarded by the government of Delta State.

Sources told newsmen yesterday that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was also looking into how the lawmaker operates 20 accounts in six banks with different signatories. 
 
Besides, the senator allegedly used a company, to buy a 12-storey building in Apapa, Lagos, belonging to the Delta State Government for N805 million. 
 
It was learnt that the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) record showed that the senator  “did not declare all the companies and bank accounts he has despite being operational prior to the time he made the declaration”. 
 
 
 
The senator’s investigation, a source said, followed a petition from  Delta State. 
 
The petitioner alleged that the senator owns a firm which was awarded a N1,580,000,000 contract by the Direct Labour Agency to supply construction equipment. 
 
Instead of following specifications, the petition said, the senator allegedly supplied used equipment, contrary to the Bill of Quantity which specified new ones. 
 
Besides,  his firm was alleged to have  secured  over N2 billion contracts from nine local government areas in Delta worth over N2billion when it was yet to be registered under the Company and Allied Matters Act. 
 
The firm was alleged to have  secured N474, 936,000 contract from the Waste Management Board  to supply bulldozers, payloaders and tipper lorries. 
 
The, EFCC, however, found out that the equipment were used items contrary to contract specifications. 
 
A source in the anti-graft commission said: “We have traced five companies to the senator.  We were able to detect that in the course of contract execution, his company  imported and supplied used equipment, contrary to the specifications in the bill of quantity. 
 
 
 
“Our team has discovered that the senator’s personal and companies’ bank accounts were linked to a bank verification number (BVN) which has more than 20 accounts domiciled in six banks. 
 
“But his relative is the sole signatory to the accounts. 
 
“They also located  one foreign account identified with the senator in HSBC Bank in Marbile Arch London, United Kingdom”. 
 
Responding to a question, the EFCC source added: “So far, the senator has questions to respond to bordering on false asset declaration, official corruption, procurement fraud, tax avoidance, false information, impersonation and embezzlement of public funds. 
 
“We are almost concluding the investigation of the senator. We will soon invite him for interview.”
