Police arrest suspected kidnappers of Lagos school students

The Special Intelligence Response Team, IRT, of the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, says it has arrested three suspects in connection with the kidnap of six students of Model College, Igbonla, Lagos.<br />

He said the suspects were arrested on Tuesday in Benin.<br />
<br />
According to Abba Kyari, an assistant commissioner of police, the three suspects arrested have been involved in various kidnap incidents within the country.<br />
<br />
“Three of the militant kidnappers, who left the creek and came to Benin to visit one of their members that was injured in recent gun battle with security agents, were arrested by IRT in Benin.<br />
<br />
“The suspects are Egelu Endurance, aka Jubby, 25, a native of Abere town in Ovia South L.G.A Edo; Stanley Yomi Irabomini, 25, aka Powei from Ovia South LGA of Edo State and Bentel Endurance, 24, also from Ovia South LGA Edo State.<br />
<br />
Mr. Kyari said the suspects have confessed to have participated in the kidnapping of prominent personalities in Lagos and Ogun state.<br />
<br />
“The suspects claimed they came to Benin to see their injured colleague and relax for a while before going back to the creek.”<br />
He said that efforts to arrest remaining gang members and rescue the school children was in progress.<br />
<br />
It can be recalled that the students were abducted at Igbonla Model School, near Epe, Lagos.<br />
<br />
The students were abducted at around 5 a.m. last Thursday by unknown gunmen, who arrived through a creek behind the school. The hoodlums broke through the school’s fence to gain access into the premises.<br />
<br />
The incident occurred seven months after gunmen kidnapped two teachers and four pupils of the same school. The victims were later freed.

Ten members of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), secretariat Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba Chapter, were allegedly injured by some security men from the teaching hospital on Wednesday during a clash.<br />

Dr Adebayo Sekunmade, the president of the ARD of the hospital told newsmen during a news conference.<br />
<br />
He said that the doctors sustained injuries when they attempted to take over their secretariat from the security men stationed there by LUTH’s management.<br />
<br />
Sekunmade told journalists that one of his members was inside the Secretariat at 2.00 a.m. on Tuesday but the security men ordered him out and locked it up.<br />
<br />
“We decided to monitor developments around the secretariat after the incident. On Wednesday morning, we saw the security men loading our belongings from there into a waiting bus.<br />
<br />
“When we confronted them, they said that they were directed to lock up the secretariat by the management of LUTH.<br />
<br />
“We went to the Chief Medical Director’s office for dialogue but he refused to attend to us. He, however, directed us to the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) of LUTH,’’ he said.<br />
<br />
Sekunmade said that the CMAC, Dr Olufemi Fasanmade, told them that the management of LUTH was retrieving the secretariat from the ARD.<br />
<br />
Sekunmade said that he demanded a court order from Fasanmade to justify his action but he could not present it.<br />
<br />
When contacted, the CMAC told journalists that LUTH’s management had given the ARD a letter asking it to vacate the building serving as its secretariat, six months ago.<br />
<br />
“Nine days ago; we gave them another letter as a reminder to leave the building but they refused, and we decided to lock up the place,’’ he said.<br />
<br />
Fasanmade said that the association should not have found it hard to vacate one of the seven accommodations it had within the hospital complex.<br />
<br />
He said that the management wanted to use it for an important purpose.<br />
<br />
“The doctors wanted to forcefully enter the building on Wednesday’s morning and LUTH’s security men had to disallow them.’’<br />
<br />
Fasanmade said that the doctors resulted into attacking the security officials.<br />
<br />
“We had to invite some police officers from the Ilasamaja and Bode Thomas Police Stations to secure the building and other LUTH’s belongings.<br />
<br />
“Some of the injured security officials are in the hospital wards receiving treatment,’’ Fasanmade said.

The Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, has said no date has yet been fixed for the signing of the 2017 budget by the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.<br />

Enang, in an electronic mail to newsmen on Wednesday, in Abuja, said consultations were still being held on the budget.<br />
<br />
He stated, “Further to several enquiries regarding action on the 2017 Appropriation Bill by the Executive, be please informed that Assent to same is not yet scheduled as consultations and engagements are ongoing.”<br />
<br />
Some online media had earlier on Wednesdayreported that Osinbajo would sign the 2017 appropriation bill into law on Thursday.<br />
<br />
The reports quoted Enang as officially informing the leadership of the National Assembly on Wednesday of the imminent signing of the Appropriation Bill.'<br />
<br />
The budget was passed by the National Assembly on May 11. On May 19, it was delivered to Acting President Osinbajo by Enang.<br />
<br />
There was controversy over who would sign the budget, but Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Acting President, Laolu Akande, said his principal would sign the budget.<br />
.<br />
“Just so we are clear: when the time comes, everything is set, & he is satisfied, Ag. President Yemi Osinbajo will assent to the 2017 Budget,”Akande had said.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) said Wednesday that it has withheld 76, 923 results of candidates who wrote the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination for various malpractices.<br />
<br />
The board also said some super rich parents paid as much as N200, 000 to owners of Computer Based Centres (CBT) to upgrade the results of their children.<br />

JAMB’s Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, said this at a briefing with reporters on Wednesday in Abuja.<br />
<br />
He said the board has so far released 1, 606,901 results, adding that the agency is yet to release 80, 889 results.<br />
<br />
Oloyede added that more results would be released once the board has finished clearing the candidates of any infractions.<br />
<br />
He assured candidates that all the 80,889 outstanding results would be released before the commencement of admission.<br />
<br />
Oloyede said: “So far we have released the results of 1,606,901 candidates after the examinations, leaving us with a balance of 80, 889. Out of this 80,000 we have deliberately withheld 76,923 for further investigation because of alleged malpractices in the centres where the examinations where held.<br />
<br />
“There is no need to panic if you belong to the 80,000. For us we want to thoroughly investigate what had happened.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
“We do not mean that this 80,889, all of them committed any infraction, no. We did not say so. In fact those who committed the infraction may be less than 10% of these people but when something happens in a centre pending investigation to know who was involved, who was not involved, the best thing is to withhold the results of certain number.<br />
<br />
“The results that have not been released will be released before the commencement of the admission exercise for those who are not guilty of any infraction. 76, 923 results are the ones we are investigating the centres.<br />
<br />
“Parents of these super VIP paid N200, 000 for each of the candidates to be able to score high marks. We are able to be ahead of them. Next year we are going to put electronic jammers in all the CBT centres. They better start to think of another way because we know that is what they do and we will also plan ahead of them.”<br />
<br />
The JAMB registrar also said 640 candidates who could not write the examination because of biometric issue would have to retake it under his supervision.<br />
<br />
“As at today, 640 candidates out of the 1.7 million across the country could not do biometric verification. We have investigated why and have found various reasons including the fact that some centres or fraudsters registered candidates taking the image of their thumbs rather than the actual thumbs.<br />
<br />
“In fairness, what we think that we should do is to assume that the students were not guilty. We have decided that the whole 640 students will be made to write their examination as we promised them and they will also be part of those who will write their examination.<br />
<br />
“Those people will however write the examination under my very own eyes because if you are well, you cannot be verified and you registered, we will still give them the opportunity,” he said.<br />
<br />
He urged candidates who have problems with data to visit any JAMB-owned CBT centres for correction.<br />
<br />
“Those who made mistake you will go and do the correction in JAMB CBT centres free of charge. We are not closing correction. Correction will continue. If you don’t have time now go next week or next month.<br />
<br />
“At JAMB offices, they have been told to do the correction free once you have paid through TSA. Even the printing for you should be free,” he added.

The sponsors of the Bill failed to present it for second reading.<br />
<br />
The general principles of the bill, sponsored by Chukwuka Onyema (PDP, Anambra), Uzoma Nkem-Abonta (PDP, Abia) and Henry Nwawuba (PDP, Imo) was listed for debate Wednesday but had to be stepped down.<br />
<br />
When it was time for the bill to be debated and the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara noticed that the lead sponsor Onyema, who is also the Minority Leader was not on the floor, he asked the Chairman, Rules and Business Committee, Emmanuel Oker-Jev to step it down.<br />
<br />
At this point, voices were heard around the floor indicating that one of the sponsors, Nkem-Abonta was on ground.<br />
<br />
The Speaker then asked Nkem-Abonta to take it.<br />
<br />
On his feet, the lawmaker stated that he could not present the bill because it was agreed between them that the Minority Leader will present it and take the lead debate.<br />
<br />
The bill was eventually stepped down with the leave of the House.<br />
<br />
According to the snippets of the lead debate, the bill that seeks to establish the South East Development Commission would be charged with the responsibility among other things to receive and manage fund from allocation of the Federation Account for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads, houses and other infrastructural damages suffered by the region as a result of the effect of the civil war as well as tackle the ecological problems and any other related environmental or developmental challenges in the South East States.<br />
<br />
The objectives of the Bill with the establishment of the South East Development Commission is help to tackle the infrastructure deficit in the South East.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
“The creation of SEDC may help to end agitation for Biafra. It will be noted that the lack of Federal Government presence in South East geopolitical zone is the main reason for the current agitation for the creation of Biafra Republic.<br />
<br />
“If there is strong federal government presence in the zone, our youth will not see Biafra as an alternative while fortune and fame seekers will not capitalize on that to hoodwink our gullible youths.<br />
<br />
“The Bill will bring hope and employment in the South East region.<br />
<br />
The synopsis further revealed the background of the bill stating that “The Civil War that ended in 1970 saw lots of destructions of roads, houses and other infrastructures in the South East region.<br />
<br />
“Arising from the massive destruction of infrastructures and gruesome bloodletting that arise from the war, the then Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon proclaimed the three Rs. Reconciliation, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation, which he heralded his policy of “No Victor” No Vanquished”.<br />
<br />
“These policies were meant to quickly heal the gaping wounds of the gruesome bloodletting, forget the horrors and evils of the war and quickly reintegrate the South East regions into the society.<br />
<br />
“The question one will ask today is: have these South East regions of Nigeria been reconciled, rehabilitated, reconstructed and integrated into the mainstream of Nigeria Society. The answer is NO.<br />
<br />
“This bill if passed into law will strategically accelerate the economic emancipation of the marginalized people of the South East who are still suffering from the shackles of the Civil War amongst other forms of deprivation.<br />
<br />
“The bill will address the Three Rs, proclaimed of Reconciliation, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation abandoned over 40 years after the war, as to give hope to the South East Region”.<br />
<br />
Being stepped down, the bill stands the chance of being presented at another legislative day.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The governor said fighting corruption was not limited to ‎discovering large sums of money here and there, but doing the right thing at the right time.</div>

The lawmakers, while debating a motion moved by Senator Clifford Ordia (Edo Central) titled ‘Motion on the Need to Curtail the Activities of the Fulani Herdsmen’, asked the Federal Government to step up action on the protection of lives and properties against the attacks by herdsmen.<br />
<br />
Speaking on the motion, Senator Francis Alimikhena (Edo North) said criminal activities by herdsmen were spreading across the country.<br />
<br />
He said, “These Fulani herdsmen (issue) is a problem; it is another Boko Haram that is rearing its head if not well nipped in the bud right now. It is very criminal for some people to start killing people, raping them, taking their possessions and they (criminals) go away with it,” he said.<br />
<br />
Alimikhena noted that there were roads in Edo which were being avoided by people for fear of being attacked by herdsmen. He stressed that farms had also been abandoned by farmers due to the attacks on them.<br />
<br />
He said, “They will rape to death and even kidnap their husbands. I don’t know where we are going. It is better for this Inspector General of Police to deploy his security operatives (in the area) instead of blowing the whistle that is not even fruitful and searching houses in which they will not find anything.<br />
<br />
“These security operatives can be deployed to attack these Fulani herdsmen who are destroying our people. If this one is not well taken care of, it is another monster that will grow and destroy this country. The activities of these herdsmen – as it is in Edo State and other parts of the country now – are worrisome to every Nigerian.”<br />
<br />
Leading the debate, Ordia said the Senate noted with serious concern “the heinous and criminal activities being perpetrated by Fulani herdsmen” who were allegedly “ravaging communities, depriving persons of right to life and prosperity; raping and defiling women and destroying farms’ crops among other criminal activities across the<br />

The Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Harry Purwanto, stated this on Wednesday in Abuja when he paid a courtesy visit to the Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Dr. Maikanti Baru.<br />

He explained that his country’s President Joko Widodo, had instructed Indonesia National Oil Company, Pertamina, to direct its attention to Nigeria in its quest to meet that country’s surging energy needs.<br />
<br />
The call by the Ambassador signifies the prospects of soaring Nigeria’s market share in Asian emerging economies which include China and India, having lost grounds in crude oil sales in the United State of America due to advances in shale oil exploration in recent years.<br />
<br />
Although Indonesia produces 900,000 barrels of crude oil per day, its supplements is 1.4million barrels per day consumption with 18 per cent supplies from Nigeria and 28 percent from Saudi Arabia.<br />
<br />
Speaking during the visit of the ambassador to his office, Dr. Baru, who welcomed the development, said NNPC was interested in working with Indonesia on its initiative to replace firewood and kerosene with Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) as primary domestic fuel for cooking.</div>

The Manager, Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos,  Mr Nehemiah Auta, has said that the personnel at the airport had been adequately trained and were ready to handle emergency cases at all times.<br />

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)  reports that Auta gave the assurance while speaking at the mock emergency airport exercise held at the MMIA on Wednesday.<br />
<br />
He said the essence of the exercise was to test the capability of the personnel and the equipment on ground to ensure that they conformed with emergency requirements.<br />
<br />
The airport manager explained that with the required personnel on ground, there was no reason why the response time would not be met in the event of emergency at the airport.<br />
<br />
According to him, with proper coordination, improved level of alertness and cooperation from various sister organisations in the system, emergency remains a great task.<br />
<br />
He stressed the need to improve on the level of alertness and communication among the agencies.<br />
<br />
“We have a structure on ground and all we need to do is to test the structure and to know how they will respond.<br />
<br />
“We are trying to improve on the level of our alertness towards emergencies because emergencies can be in the day, at night or at anytime.<br />
<br />
“The timely response is what matters. You can imagine an aircraft engulfed in flames, the time of response of the medical support matters. That’s the essence,’’ Auta said.<br />
<br />
He said that with the category nine status of the MMIA, the airport had adequate fire tenders and was ready to handle emergency situations.<br />
<br />
Auta also explained that the mock exercise was also to enable them display their might towards the certification of the MMIA airport, which would be achieved within the next few months.<br />
<br />
On his part, the Director of Airport Operations, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Capt. Rabiu Yadudu, explained that the agency was working in line with the aerodrome emergency plan at the airport, in readiness towards the certification.<br />
<br />
Yadudu said the exercise would lead to the certification of the airport as both personnel and equipment were being tested.<br />
<br />
He said FAAN personnel were always compliant to the response time as stipulated by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and had taken the training very seriously.<br />
<br />
NAN reports that the exercise, which is conducted annually, was witnessed by the National Emergency Management Agency, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, the Police and other stakeholders.<br />

Mr Musa Baba-Panya, an Abuja-based Legal Practitioner has instituted a suit in the FCT High Court against Access Bank Plc claiming N100 million for alleged defamation of his character.<br />

Mr Chidi Ifeonye, the counsel to the plaintiff, who filed the suit on May 26, made the process available to newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja.<br />
<br />
The plaintiff had instituted the suit as a result of the bank’s failure to reverse the N40, 000 he claimed was debited from his Diamond bank account while using the defendant’s ATM facility on March 11.<br />
<br />
The plaintiff had described N100 million claims as general, aggravated and punitive damages for the defamation.<br />
<br />
Baba-Panya said that the defendant’s alleged recalcitrant attitude caused him grave embarrassment, hardship and trauma.<br />
<br />
“After a considerable waiting, no response of any sort came forth from the defendant, till date, thus was left with no option than to institute this action,’’ he said.<br />
<br />
The plaintiff averred that the money in debt was meant to execute a printing project at the ECWA Church, Maitama on that fateful day.<br />
<br />
“The development was most unpleasant to both the printer and I. It especially put me in unwarranted ridicule and scrutiny among the Church folks,’’ he said.<br />
<br />
The plaintiff is seeking a declaration finding the defendant liable for the defamation of his character via its negligent conduct against him.<br />
<br />
The plaintiff is also urging the court to compel the bank to write a letter of apology copying the Customer Relation Manager platforms of the CBN-interbank system.<br />
<br />
He also prayed for apology letter to be forwarded to the Customer Relation Manager of Diamond Bank Plc and to the ECWA Church, Maitama, Abuja.<br />
<br />
Baba-Panya was also seeking the award of N40, 000 being the alleged liquidated money in debt.<br />
<br />
He also sought an interest award at inter-bank rate on the money debt effective March 11, until final judgment.<br />
<br />
The plaintiff further asked for award of 10 per cent interest on the final judgment sum until final liquidation.<br />
<br />
He urged the court to grant him an award of N500, 000 as cost of legal cost, including solicitor’s fees.<br />
<br />
The matter has however not been slated for hearing.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Earlier on, Bature said he came to officially present himself to the governor as the new commander and to pledge his support in ensuring security in the state.</div>

<div>Speaking at the Stakeholders High Level Monitoring Mission to Visit to PAN Learning Center in Kaduna where 159 Internally Displaced Person's (IDP's) from the North-East are currently undergoing training on automobile engineers courtesy the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the commissioner noted that the figures were  arrived at by an assessment of the world bank which he said calls for the support of world and regional agencies towards rebuilding the ravaged communities.</div>

<div>He said, "It is on record that the state has lost 5,000 classrooms, 260 healthcare centres,  900 municipal buildings and 1,600 water distribution pumps, among other key structures like power lines to insurgency.</div>

<div>" There is urgent need for intervention in the IDPs camps in the state, sheltering about 200, 000 in Maiduguri, and about two million across the  state, where poverty is getting stronger, resulting to unsavoury stories emanating from the camps."</div>

<div>He commended the UNDP for the gesture, while assuring of the state government’s desire to partner with the organization towards training more youth to not only become self-reliant, but be employers.</div>

<div>The UNDP Livelihood programme coordinator, Mr. Mathew Also, however, said that the programme is planning to sponsor 1, 500 IDP's at the centre in order for them to be self-reliant through funding from the European Union.</div>

In their separate reactions over the outcome of the civil disobedience, which paralysed Enugu, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi and Imo States and partially grounded Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Asaba in Delta, as well as Bayelsa State, the three Igbo sociocultural groups further lauded Kanu for directing the sit-at-home in the entire region and beyond stressing that the exercise must be repeated often.<br />

The ECA which reacted through its Publicity Secretary, Rev Fr John Odey, said, “We congratulate Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and the IPOB for a very successful display of their popularity for the whole world to see on Tuesday, May 30, 2017.<br />
<br />
“By the word of mouth, Nnamdi Kanu paralysed the entire eastern region and beyond by locking down the zone completely.<br />
<br />
“The lesson here is threefold, one, our people showed all, their loyalty to the IPOB, two of our people also openly announced their total rejection of Nigeria as presently constituted, and finally our people decided to leave no one in doubt of our preference for freedom as opposed to eternal servitude.<br />
<br />
“For this great feat, we thank Kanu for a job well done and pledge our total support. We are also saying, let’s do it again sometime soon.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">In the statement titled: “God, Heal Our Land”, Afenifere in Ekiti said the scarcity of fuel unleashed on the citizenry by the governor’s face-off with petrol marketers could have been resolved by dialogue and not resort to strong arm tactics which culminated in destruction of some filling stations by suspected thugs.</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">It said: “Currently the economic activities of the state has run ‘berserk’ due to executive misapplication of strategic management of human and business relationship. Now, no one is sure of what happens next because of the misunderstanding between government and fuel marketers which has now degenerated into chaos.<br />
“And this has been going on for two full weeks now and unfortunately, government is feeling comfortable and justifying its strategy by pulling down several of the fuel stations for flimsy excuse which not a few have interpreted as mere political vendetta and mere braggadocio on the part of the government.<br />
“Our suggestion is that impunity to destroy economic livelihood of people should stop because we believe that no fuel marketer approved for himself the construction of any filling station. Government did. And if government woulds now change its mind, then a process of discussion and negotiation should be put in place rather than just breaking of the extant laws.<br />
“This is what is called executive recklessness and this is very unacceptable. We wonder the whereabouts of Governor Ayo Fayose during the celebration of Democracy Day, a national activity. He was conspicuously absent from Ekiti for days only to resurface to abuse President Muhammadu Buhari requesting him to resign because of ill-health.<br />
“At the same time he degraded his office by his statement on the veracity of the Chibok girls (release) saying it was a ploy to rattle the former president. All these outbursts by our governor belittles our collective humanity as a state.”</blockquote>

“Afenifere also wish to sympathize with Ekiti workers that none of who has received any salary this year, some since October 2016. And yet the governor feels unconcerned so far he can dole out a thousand Naira and a cup of rice to the famished workers in the name of his stomach infrastructure, which many have described as a fraud.”</blockquote>

A source told newsmen in Abuja that the representatives of the President had just concluded a meeting with the leadership of the National Assembly where the date and time of the budget has been announced.<br />

The National Assembly on Thur, day May 18, passed the N7.44 trillion 2017 Appropriation Bill after over 4 months since it was submitted by President Muhammadu Buhari to a joint session of the National Assembly.<br />

Both chambers of the assembly raised the figure from N7.30 trillion presented by the president to N7.44 trillion.<br />
<br />
The National Assembly transmitted same to the President on Friday May 19 for assent.<br />
<br />
However, the absence of President Muhammadu Buhari has raised a lot of questions as to who would sign the budget.<br />
<br />
However, Osinbajo doused the misconception when he told Nigerians that he would sign the document into law as Acting President.<br />
<br />
Osinbajo while presenting his Democracy Day speech on May 29 also promised that the budget would be signed soon.<br />
<br />
About two days after the speech, there are now clear indication that the budget would be signed into law on Thursday June 1 at 9:00 A.M.<br />

According to the statement, Ambode commends Osinbajo for granting the request of the state government to do the road. <div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Recall that in March this year, Ambode told the state residents at a function that his administration had the money and design for the reconstruction of the road which had become a national disgrace but that the Federal government was however hesitant in giving the state the approval to reconstruct the road. This had at the time caused  friction between him and his predecessor, Babatunde Fashola, who is the current Minister for Power, Works and Housing. </div>

In the spirit of the regeneration and urbanisation that this administration has set out to achieve, we believe strongly that the image that is exhumed by the decadence of that road must be repaired and we took it upon ourselves to appropriate the 2017 budget that the House of Assembly should approve the total reconstruction of the Airport Road from Oshodi to the International Airport.<br />
The State currently has a design of 10 lanes to come from Oshodi to the International Airport with interchange and flyover that would drop you towards the Local Airport. The contractor is already set to go and everything as I said has been completed and we already have the cash, but alas we are having challenges with the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing.<br />
This is a Federal and not a State road. The Federal Ministry of Works believes that they should do the road, but they have not been able to do it all these years past. I just want to appeal to the Federal Ministry of Works, to let go or reimburse us with whatever it is that they owe us and even if they are not willing to pay us now, we have the money to do it. It is a national disgrace and we would not be part of it. We would like to do it as part of the celebration of Lagos at 50,” Ambode had said then.</blockquote>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">In his response, Fashola had said that the delay in granting the request of the state government was because the Memorandum conveying the request of Lagos State which was already before the Federal Executive Council has not reached completion stage.</div>

The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have said that the Ogun State senator, Buruji Kashamu, will not be extradited to the United States of America (USA) to face hard drug importation charges until all court actions in respect to the extradition are resolved.<br />

The duo made their positions known in the court processes they filed before Justice Gabriel Kolawole of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.<br />
<br />
Kashamu, who is representing Ogun West Senatorial District in the Senate, had dragged the two agencies before the court seeking their committal to prison on the allegation that they were planning to forcefully kidnap and abduct him to the United States for trial in drug-related offences.<br />
<br />
However, at the resumed hearing of the matter, Kashamu told the court through his counsel, Akin Olujimi, that the AGF and NDLEA had agreed not to extradite him until all court actions on the issue were resolved.<br />
<br />
Olujimi said in view of the assurances from the two parties, there was no need to pursue any court action against them and asked Justice Kolawale to grant him leave to withdraw the suit.<br />
<br />
Olujimi told the court that both parties would now go back to the Court of Appeal to continue with the appeal cases that emanated from the refusal of the Federal High Courts to grant the extradition request.<br />
<br />
Counsel to the AGF, Tanko Ashang and that of the NDLEA, Mike Kassa, did not object to the withdrawal of the case and the resolve to go to the Court of Appeal to pursue all pending appeals.<br />
<br />
Justice Kolawale, in his brief ruling, granted the leave for withdrawal of the suit and the decision to shift to the appellate court for the pursuit of the appeals.<br />
<br />
“In the light of the application to withdraw this suit and to move to the Court of Appeal to pursue all pending appeals in respect of the extradition matter, leave is hereby granted for withdrawal of this suit,” Justice Kolawole held.</div>

The Imo State Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, said his command did not arrest any member of the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra or Indigenous People of Biafra, during the May 30, 50th anniversary organised by the groups.<br />

Addressing newsmen on how his command was able to secure and police the state during the celebration, Ezike, said that the police deployed officers in places he described as strategic and black spots.<br />
<br />
According to the CP, there was no breakdown of the law and order during the celebration by the groups because he deployed a strategic format called “Visibility Policing” which rekindled the confidence of the people in the police and other security agencies.<br />
<br />
Ezike said that his command did not arrest any member of the groups seeking secession from the country because they were nowhere to be found, neither did they protest on the streets or cause a breach of the law and order.<br />
<br />
He said, “No, we did not arrest any MASSOB or IPOB member. They were nowhere to found. Is it not when you see somebody that you will arrest him or her? They did not protest or cause breakdown of the law and order. We were not against people sitting at home, but what we are against is, people, engaging in acts that will cause problems in the society.”<br />
<br />
The CP acknowledged that people had the right to engage in a peaceful demonstration, but what the police were against was for people who had no constitutional rights to instruct and try to enforce members of the public to sit at home.</div>

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has condemned the kidnapping of the member representing Takai/Sumaila Federal Constituency, Garba Durbunde.<br />

Durbunde was said to have been kidnapped by unknown persons at Jere on the Kaduna-Abuja Road at about 5 pm while returning to Abuja from Kano on Tuesday.<br />
<br />
A statement issued on Wednesday in Kano by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Malam Mohammed Garba, said the governor was shocked by the incident, especially that it was happening during the Ramadan.<br />
<br />
He described the kidnapping of the lawmaker as an act of wickedness perpetrated by evil and cold-hearted elements.<br />
<br />
The governor called on the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to intensify effort to rescue the kidnapped lawmaker.<br />
<br />
He advised members of the public to be extra vigilant and security conscious at all times.</div>
