Several thousand protesters attacked the US embassy in the Iraqi capital on Tuesday over <a href="https://www.concise.ng/2019/12/31/outrage-as-us-strikes-kill-25-pro-iran-group-in-iraq/">airstrikes</a> that killed more than two dozen pro-Iran fighters at the weekend.
A stream of men in military fatigues, as well as some women, marched through checkpoints that usually restrict access to Baghdad’s high-security Green Zone.
They waved flags in support of the Hashed al-Shaabi, a network of armed groups that has been largely incorporated into the security forces.
On Sunday, at least 25 fighters from a hardline Hashed faction known as Kataeb Hezbollah (Hezbollah Brigades) were killed in US air strikes on a base in western Iraq.
The strikes were in response to escalating rocket attacks on Iraqi bases where US forces are deployed.
The attacks have not been claimed but US security assessments have largely blamed them on Kataeb Hezbollah.
The demonstrators on Tuesday reached the US embassy walls, chanting “Death to America” and burning US flags.
They held up posters calling for the embassy to be shut down and for parliament to order US forces to leave the country.
“Parliament should oust US troops, or else we will,” one poster said.
They pulled security cameras off the wall as Iraqi security forces tried to keep them back.

The Nigerian Army has debunked reports making the rounds over an attempt by the Boko Haram terrorists to take over Madagali Town in Adamawa State.
Media Coordinator in charge of Nigerian Army Operations Colonel Aminu Iliyasu, in a statement, said it is false.
“The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to a false report in which it was alleged that troops of the Nigerian Army were engaged in a battle with Boko Haram criminals who were attempting to seize Madagali Town in Adamawa State.
“The controversial report further stated that the troops successfully repelled the attack and that no casualty was recorded on the part of the troops.
“This false publication was also attributed to in a misleading hausa online publication on 28 December 2019 captioned SOJOJI NA FAFATAWA DA YAN BOKO HARAM DAKE KOKARIN KARBE WANI GARI A ADAMAWA’*.
“The Nigerian Army views this malicious report as a deliberate attempt to instil fear and cause disaffection among the residents of Madagali, Adamawa State and the nation at large and therefore wish to categorically state that no such encounter ever happened as reported”.
“It is however pertinent to note that the Theatre Command Operation LAFIYA DOLE is currently in a relentless pursuit of the remnants of criminal Boko Haram and Islamic State’s West Africa Province insurgents, routing them from their hideouts in the North East under the newly launched special operation nicknamed ‘Operation RUFE KOFA’.
“The Nigerian Army equally reported via a press statement issued on 26 December 2019 that her troops conducted a robust clearance operation on 24 December 2019 from Madagali through Waga Lawan, Jaje to Fadama in Madagali LGA of Adamawa State where the gallant troops dealt a decisive blow on some marauding Boko Haram criminals hibernating along the axis.
“To this end, the general public is hereby requested to disregard the mischievous publications as there has indeed been no encounter between Boko Haram criminals and troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE as stated.
“The Nigerian Army views the media as reliable partners in the successful conduct of all her operations and as such remain always receptive to all media professionals that wish to inquire or verify any report that would assist the ongoing efforts at ensuring the defence of the territorial integrity of our dear nation”.

US airstrikes against a pro-Iran group in Iraq have killed at least 25 fighters, a paramilitary umbrella has said on Monday.
Sunday night’s attacks saw US planes hit several bases belonging to the Hezbollah brigades, one of the most radical factions of Hashed al-Shaabi, a Tehran-backed Iraqi paramilitary coalition.
The strikes “killed 25 and wounded 51, including commanders and fighters, and the toll could yet rise,” said the Hashed, which holds major sway in Iraq.
Victims were still being pulled from the rubble of bases near Al-Qaim, an Iraqi district bordering Syria, on Monday, it said.
Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said the US had “shown its firm support for terrorism and its neglect for the independence and sovereignty of countries” by carrying out the attacks.
Washington, itself a key ally of Baghdad, must accept the consequences of its “illegal act”, he added.
US Defence Secretary Mark Esper described the attacks — which hit three locations in Iraq and two in neighbouring Syria — as “successful” and did not rule out further military action against Iran-backed militias.
The strikes were in retaliation for a series of rocket attacks since late October against US interests in Iraq, including a barrage of more than 30 fired on Friday at an Iraqi base in Kirkuk, where a US civilian contractor was killed.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Tuesday that the country’s minimum wage is to increase by more than four times the rate of UK inflation from next year.
A 6.2-percent increase from April takes the so-called national living wage for workers aged 25 and over from £8.21 to a minimum £8.72 ($10.79 to $11.52, 9.63 euros to 10.27 euros).
Johnson, whose Conservative party’s recent general election victory came with support from economically struggling pro-Brexit areas, said it was the biggest increase since 2016.
The new government said almost three million people would benefit from the increase.
UK annual inflation stands at 1.5 percent, with consumers’ purchasing power under pressure from higher import prices following the EU referendum in 2016, which has weighed on the pound.
Johnson has been advised to repay the trust of voters in more disadvantaged areas, particularly in northern England, after he secured the Conservatives’ biggest majority since the 1980s.
The December 12 vote saw swathes of working class, traditionally left-wing Labour-supporting places, switch to the right-wing Tories because of Brexit.
During the election campaign, Johnson pledged more investment to reverse nearly 10 years of austerity measures under his predecessors.
But the British Chambers of Commerce said above-inflation pay increases came at a difficult time for hard-pressed businesses amid economic uncertainty.
“Raising wage floors will pile further pressure on cashflow and eat into training and investment budgets,” said the trade body’s co-executive director Hannah Essex.
“For this policy to be sustainable, government must offset these costs by reducing others and impose a moratorium on any further upfront costs for business.”

Spanish police probing the deaths of a British pastor and his two children in a pool at a resort on the Costa Del Sol have closed the investigation.
Gabriel Diya, 52, his daughter Comfort, nine, and his son Praise-Emmanuel, 16, drowned on Christmas Eve at the Club La Costa World in Fuengirola.
A police spokesman described it as a freak accident and put their deaths down to a lack of swimming ability.
But Gabriel Diya’s wife, Olubunmi, wants the investigation to continue and is ‘not satisfied’ their deaths were a ‘simple accident’.
She previously said in a statement all three victims could swim and she could seek further investigations, her lawyer has said.
Mrs Diya, from Charlton, south east London, also claimed ‘something was wrong’ with the Spanish hotel pool after her little girl’s swim cap was found in the pool pump by police divers.
But today Spanish police handed the conclusions of their initial report to a magistrate and the findings will later be made public, according to the BBC.
Javier Toro, a lawyer acting for Mrs Diya, said different engineers could be brought in for a ‘parallel investigation’ after police said their own findings point to the incident being a ‘tragic accident’.
Hotel operator CLC World Resorts and Hotels has said Mrs Diya’s claims are ‘directly at odds with the findings of the police report’.
In a statement, it stressed police findings made it ‘clear that their exhaustive investigations have confirmed the pool was working normally and there was no malfunction of any kind’.
An English translation of a Guardia Civil statement, released by the hotel operator yesterday, stated that tests had found ‘no irregularity’ in the pool’s system.
It said investigations indicated the accident was ’caused by the lack of expertise of the victims when swimming’.
But Toro was quoted by the BBC as saying: ‘It’s very rare for three people.
‘Something must have happened apart from a simple error or simple accident.’
He said the family is ‘not satisfied with the interpretation of it being a simple accident’.
‘Clearly the death of three people at the same time in a pool makes it evident that something very strange happened. It’s an event that must be studied,’ he said.
‘We do not discard the option of opening a parallel investigation through different engineers… to figure out what happened’.
According to the BBC, Toro said the family hoped to be given the detailed police report on the deaths next week.
Mrs Diya, 49, and younger daughter Favour Diya, 14, were also on the holiday but were unharmed.
The ‘utterly heartbroken’ Mrs Diya has said her loved ones, who were reportedly on holiday with another unharmed daughter, were not left unattended and were somehow ‘dragged into the middle’ of the pool.
They followed the instructions displayed by the poolside at all times, she said.
Comfort had been playing in the pool with sister Favour when she slipped and drifted towards the deep end, which was six-and-a-half-foot deep.
Late Diya’s Facebook account lists him as a pastor at Open Heavens London, a Christian religious group with origins in Nigeria, based in Charlton, south-east London.
It is part of the Redeemed Christian Church of God and worships at the St Richard’s Church Centre in Charlton.
Around five well-wishers arrived at the centre in the hope of paying their respects to the Diya family on Sunday morning but left after it appeared no service would be taking place.
Outside the nearby family home yesterday, where flowers and cards were left by the front door, friends and family paid tribute to the victims.

Mino Raiola, the agent of Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba says the midfielder’s “heart” is at Old Trafford, adding that he needs to be playing in a side capable of winning trophies.
Pogba, who returned to United from Juventus in 2016, admitted in June that he was considering leaving Old Trafford for a “new challenge”, while Raiola added a month later that he was in the process of finding his client a new club.
But the 26-year-old remained with United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said this month he will not be sold in the January transfer window.
Asked if he and Pogba were happy with the situation, Raiola exclusively told Sky Sports News: “Paul has always respected Manchester United, as long as Manchester United has respected Paul.
“The only one that talks for Manchester United and Paul is Ole. I go by what he says; he will not move. That’s OK and we are good with them.
“Paul is struggling a little bit with his injury and that’s our main interest now. There’s one objective that Paul has and that is to perform as well as possible with Manchester United.
“He’s a top pro and I think that his heart is in the right place with Manchester United.”
However, Raiola – who also represents the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Matthijs de Ligt and Erling Haaland – warned Pogba’s future may come into question if United continue to struggle to compete with Europe’s top sides.
Questioned on whether he could see Pogba still being at United in a year’s time, Raiola said: “Yes I can, but in a club that I hope fights for the league and hopefully the Champions League.
“Is that strange? Am I the only one that’s worried? Is the owner not worried? I think that everybody that is in love with Manchester United is worried about that.
“I’m worried about that for my player. I’m not a fan of Manchester United but I have a very direct interest.
“As long as Paul is in Manchester United, he wants to win trophies with Manchester United. That’s the kind of player he is and he will not act differently.
“Like Ole’s saying, it’s a work in progress now this club. He says he’s working on a team for next year. Let’s hope that it goes well for him because the world needs Manchester United on the top.
“Clearly they are not where they think they should be.”

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday heeded the voice of reasoning and amended the 2018 land use charge, Concise News reports.
This news medium understands that the 2018 land use charge requires that a property occupied by the owner and tenant(s) or third parties will be charged at 0.256 percent per annum.
While an investment property fully occupied by tenants or a third party for revenue generation will be charged at 0.76 percent per annum.
The law added that a property solely occupied by the owner for a residential purpose will be charged at a rate of 0.076 percent per annum.
However, after months of complaint by the citizens and lawsuit instituted against the state government, the assembly amended the law after adopting the recommendations and resolutions of its committee.
The adoption came after the six-man ad hoc committee constituted to review the law presented the report of its findings following a public hearing.
Rotimi Olowo, chairman of the committee, said the public hearing revealed that the increase is generally “perceived to be arbitrary and unrealistic in a recessed economy” and that the state government should revert to the land use charge of 2017.
He said participants and stakeholders agreed that a vacant plot of land and unoccupied properties should be exempted from the land use charge liabilities.
“The Committee also posited that Section 17(c) (i) there is no need for 50% payment by an aggrieved owners over disputed charges before their eligibility to appeal; while aggrieved residents/owners should pay the preceding year’s charges while the disputed charges are being resolved; amongst others,” a statement from the assembly read.
“The Committee, however, recommended that as from the commencement of this Law; there should be proper classification of commercial and residential properties in the State for the purpose of levying charges in accordance with the provision of this Law by the property identification officers of the Ministry.”
The committee also recommended that “there shall be twenty percent (20%) increase from the fees chargeable before the repeal of the Land Use Charge Law Ch. L79 2015, and the increment referred to in sub-section (1) above shall be renewable every ten (10) years; Pensioner should be replaced with a person who retires from a Pensionable Office; The owner of the property is liable to pay Land Use Charge in respect of any taxable property.”
“It should be noted that from the date when Land Use Charge is levied on a property in accordance with this Law, the provisions of the Assessment Law, Land Rates Law, Neighborhood Improvement Charge Law and any amendments made pursuant to it shall cease to apply to that property amongst other recommendations,” it said.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have assured football fans in the country there will be a lot of changes and improvement in the outings of the national teams.
Nigeria had a bad year as many of the national teams failed to impress in major competitions and qualifying for others.
‘The U-17 team failed to make it past the group stage of the 2019 World Cup, the home-based Super Eagles side did not also qualify for the African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Also, the Flying Eagles did not impress at the U-20 World Cup earlier in the year as the male and <a href="https://www.concise.ng/2019/10/07/super-falcons-fail-to-qualify-for-2020-tokyo-olympics/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">female Olympic football teams surrendered in the race to the 2020 Tokyo Games.</a>
Only the Super Eagles did put smiles on the faces of Nigerians as they cla<a href="https://www.concise.ng/2019/07/17/nigeria-vs-tunisia-leading-scorer-ighalos-goal-hands-super-eagles-bronze/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">imed the bronze medal at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt</a> after missing out in the last two editions – 2017 and 2015.
The NFF, have, however, assured that in 2020, there will be an improvement in the performances of the national teams.
According to the NFF Secretary-General Muhammed Sanusi during a chat with the press in Abuja, Monday, the poor performances of Nigerian teams in 2019 would spark a change in the fortunes of the national sides.
Sanusi who described the inability of the country’s football teams to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Games as a big blow to Nigeria, said the NFF are working to revamp the game in the West African nation.
“Looking at the performance of Nigerian national teams in international engagements this year, I believe their performance was not top-notch as people expected,” he admitted.
“Apart from the Super Eagles, who won the bronze medal at the Egypt 2019 Nations Cup, the Super Falcons, the U-17, U-20, U-23, and home-based Eagles did not excel in their campaigns.
“This did not go down well with the NFF. But the federation has started working to revamp the standard of football in the country.
“Our vision is to get the required and experienced coaches to handle our national teams.”
Also, he noted the Glass House is happy to extend the contract (which expires in June 2020) of Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr.
“Although Rohr has been doing well with the Super Eagles, the NFF’s technical committee will still review his performance and also give him guidelines to follow in his new contract,” Sanusi added.
“With this and other moves on the pipeline, Nigerians will see a change in football development in the country.”

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has bemoaned the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) since it was introduced into the Premier League this season.
Concise News understands that a particular source of concern for Guardiola and other managers about VAR has revolved around offside calls.
The Spaniard whose side defeated Sheffield United 2-0, said VAR was “a big mess”, with the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss adding: “Hopefully next season it can do better.”
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder was annoyed after VAR denied his side a goal against champions City — the fifth time it has happened to the Blades this season.
“Yet again we had another goal disallowed by VAR,” he said.
“That’s about eight or nine over the weekend, this is not a situation helping the game.”
Also, Wolves captain Conor Coady was frustrated when his side were denied what seemed a legitimate equaliser just before half-time against runaway league leaders Liverpool on Sunday when Pedro Neto’s effort was chalked off because wing-back Jonny was deemed to be offside in the build-up.
Wolves eventually lost 1-0 at Anfield and Coady told the BBC afterward: “A lot of people are going to tell me that they have come to the right decision and they might have. But what is it, an armpit that’s offside, or a toe, or something like that?”
Last weekend saw Norwich, Brighton, Sheffield United, Wolves, Brighton and Crystal Palace all have goals disallowed by marginal VAR rulings amid doubts over whether the available technology is accurate enough to make such fractional calls.
Players and managers have also questioned whether the system should not be used to reverse an on-field decision that appears correct to the naked eye, a view that received support on Monday from the general secretary of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) — the sport’s ultimate rule-making body.
Lukas Brud, while not addressing specific incidents in English football, said IFAB guidance advises VAR should only be used to correct clear errors also applied to offside.
“Clear and obvious still remains — it’s an important principle,” Brud said in comments reported by the British media.
“There should not be a lot of time spent to find something marginal.
“If you spend minutes trying to identify whether it is offside or not, then it’s not clear and obvious and the original decision should stand,” he added.

The Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has said the arrest of his Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Diaspora Affairs Osemwingie-Osazee Ero by Interpol has nothing to do with the government.
Concise News reports that Ero was allegedly arrested by Interpol in France on accusations of money laundering with $2 million cash said to have been found on him while the arrest was made at the Paris Airport in the presence of Obaseki.
The arrest allegedly took place last week as the duo was on their way from China where they had been for some business deals but the news broke on Sunday.
While reacting to the arrest, Obaseki said it had nothing to do with him or the Edo State Government, describing the news as “unreliable.”
“We learnt about the alleged arrest of the Arts, Culture, Tourism and Diaspora Commissioner, Hon. Osaze Osemwingie-Ero from unreliable sources on social media and we are unable to confirm either the alleged arrest or what might have led to it,” Obaseki said in the statement.
“But we can confirm without equivocation that whatever the issues might be, they are totally personal and have nothing whatsoever to do with the Edo State Government or Governor Godwin Obaseki.”

Immediate past governor of Imo State, Senator Rochas <a href="https://www.concise.ng/Okorocha" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Okorocha</a>, has said that no past or present governor of the state has matched his achievements.
The senator representing Imo West Senatorial District in the National Assembly also described himself as the ‘highly misunderstood’ person in Nigeria, due to the way people look at him.
Okorocha added that since he governed the state for eight years, no administration is yet to do up to one-tenth of the projects he embarked on. According to him, he built one of the best Government Houses in the country.
Senator Okorocha boasted that he built the first international cargo airport in Imo state, adding that it was adjudged the best in the country by FAAN.
“I built six Universities, four Polytechnics, two Colleges of Education, who has beaten this record in the history of that State,” the lawmaker said this on Channels Television’s Newsnight.
“I built 30 hospitals, some of them completed, while most are not completed, but they have all the roofs, tiled, except equipping; I built one of the best state high court, the best prison, the best police headquarters
“I know my nature, I am highly misunderstood in this country, and some people define me from different angles. If I do one-tenth of what the governor is doing there, the whole world will hear about it.”
“I wish you can meet the governor of Imo state (Emeka Ihedioha) and ask that Rochas said what he has done is not up to one-tenth of what I have done, or other governors put together have done.”
On the rift he had with the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Adams Oshiomhole, Senator Okorocha said he is yet to know the cause of the rift, stressing that he looks forward to hearing from the APC Chairman.
“If I was told in my dream that I’ll be treated this way, I’d have said it’s not possible. One day, the opportunity may occur that I might hear from Adams what really went wrong because till today I am very much confused as to what went wrong.
“I have tried to make an excuse for him that probably somebody must have gossiped or do something that he believed. Or alternatively, it must be a search for political power or relevance or it would have been who he is.
“But whatever happened in APC was still like a dream to me, because APC had no reason to lose Imo state.”
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Culture and Tourism, Okorocha, insisted that he will not leave the APC and if he will, it is not in his immediate plans because the party is more like a family to him.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday appointed Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad as the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Concise News reports.
Minister of Power, Sale Mamman, made this known in a statement issued by his spokesman, Aaron Artimas, in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
The statement said the new chief of the agency has acquired vast knowledge and planning experience in the power sector.
According to the statement, Ahmad is a renewable energy expert, who holds two masters degrees in development studies and project planning.
The minister also said the president has appointed Olaniyi Netufo as REA’s Executive Director – South West, while Eddi Mietuade Smith was appointed as Non-Executive Director for South-South.
Mamman had ordered the indefinite suspension of Damilola Ogunbiyi as the REA managing director. He also ordered an investigation into alleged infractions by the agency under Ogunbiyi.
In a statement on December 24, the minister said the move was to sanitise the activities of the agency and reposition it for better service delivery.
“Following some apparent infractions in the Rural Electrification Agency, the Minister of Power Engr Sale Mamman has directed the Managing Director of the Agency, Ms Damilola Ogunbiyi to proceed on indefinite suspension with immediate effect,” Artimas said.
“Ms Ogunbiyi is to hand over to the next most senior officer in the Agency.
“Consequently, the Minister has directed an immediate investigation into the activities of the Agency towards repositioning it for better service delivery.”
The REA was established to increase electricity access to rural and underserved clusters across the country by developing off-grid electrification strategies.

President Muhammadu Buhari has extended a hand of fellowship to the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), calling on them to join him in taking “Nigeria to the Next Level.”

Speaking in Lagos on Monday, Information and Culture Minister Lai Mohammed told a press conference that 2019 has been a great year for Nigeria.
According to him, Buhari’s government had taken Nigerians closer to its “Next Level” target and thus, the PDP should join the train in making the West African nation better.
“We urge the opposition to join hands with us to move Nigeria to the Next Level, instead of engaging in scorched-earth opposition that benefits no one,” he said.
“2019 has been a momentous year, and this Administration has taken Nigeria closer to its Next Level target. The economy has continued to witness a strong performance, building on the steady recovery since the last recession.”
“Nigeria has not reached its debt ceiling of 25% in total public debt stock to GDP (Debt/GDP), as it is currently on 18.99%, but its debt service to revenue ratio has been higher than desirable, which explains why the government is moving ahead with its economic diversification efforts, in addition to increasing oil and non-oil revenues and widening the tax base.”

Super Eagles star William Troost-Ekong has said he does not regret playing for Nigeria instead of the Dutch senior national team, Concise News reports.
This news medium understands that Troost-Ekong whose mother Eleanore Troost is Dutch and has a Nigerian father chose to feature for the three-time African champions.
He was handed a call up to the Eagles in 2016 by the then-coach of the side late Stephen Keshi and has since grown in leaps and bound, featuring in the 2018 World Cup, <a href="https://www.concise.ng/2019/07/17/nigeria-vs-tunisia-leading-scorer-ighalos-goal-hands-super-eagles-bronze/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">winning bronze at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)</a> and serving as the team’s assistant captain.
A former Dutch star Rafael van der Vaart had said William would have made the European side’s team if he were a little bit patient.
The defender, has, however, said he is happy to have pitched tent with the Nigerian side and does not have any iota of regret doing so.
“I’m satisfied, I’m really happy with the place I am right now. Of course, when you do look back it is always easy to advise someone what they should have done,” he told Soccernet when asked if van der Vaart was right.
“But I think I made a lot of right decisions and I stand by my decisions that it was always a dream to play for Nigeria. The pride I get playing for Nigeria wearing the shirt, I wouldn’t want to trade that for anyone else.
“Who is to say that playing for the Netherlands is better than playing for Nigeria? I respect his opinion and his view because it’s also showing that I’m doing something well for people to be talking like that and especially a great player like Rafael van der Vaart. I’m very happy about my decision and wouldn’t change it for anything.”

Also confirming it on his handle, Teebillz said his team and Tacha passed a unanimous resolution on December 17 to disengage their contract.
According to him, Billz vision will no longer be responsible for the management and brand strategy and publicity services of Tacha.
He stated that this would take effect on January 16 2020, as the team would finalise ongoing brand management.
It is however not clear what led to this, as none of them has opened up on it.
Tacha had announced <a href="https://www.concise.ng/2019/10/11/bbnaija-tacha-announces-tiwa-savages-ex-husband-as-new-manager/">Teebillz as her manager</a> on October 11.
Recall that shortly after she was disqualified from the ‘Pepper Dem’ House for engaging in a fight with Mercy, Teebillz demanded connection with with her, so as to be her manager.
Sharing a photo of Tacha on his Instagram page, he wrote: “No be joke I will make Tacha the biggest brand out of Africa….. Bigger than Big brother it self! Tacha is the Kim K of Africa!!! #NoCap pls connect me with her I want to be her Business manager.”

Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has insisted that the Convener of Revolution Now protest, Omoyele Sowore, and former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki, were released on compassionate ground.
Concise News reports that Malami made this known after Sowore’s lawyer and human rights activist, Femi Falana (SAN), asked him to apologise to the aforementioned men for their belated release from illegal detention.
Falana said this in response to Malami’s claim that Dasuki and Sowore were released from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) on compassionate grounds.
It was learned that the two were released after President Muhammadu Buhari asked the <a href="https://www.concise.ng/2019/12/24/dss-finally-releases-activist-sowore-sambo-dasuki/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">minister to make the move.</a>
The Nigerian government is prosecuting Dasuki for alleged criminal breach of trust, misappropriation and dishonest release of funds to the tune of N33.3 billion, Sowore is being prosecuted for alleged treason among other “offences.”
“We were flabbergasted when you turned round to inform us that you had no power to direct the State Security Service to comply with the order of the Federal High Court for the release Sowore from custody,” a statement from Falana, issued on Sunday, read.
“But having belatedly deemed it fit to review your position and advise the Federal Government in line with the tenets of the rule of law you ought to have apologised to both Sowore and Dasuki.
“That is what is expected of you in accordance with Section 32 (6) of the 1999 Constitution. It is not an occasion for grandstanding or arrogant display of power.”
But Malami insisted on Monday that Sowore and Dasuki were released on compassionate ground.

“First, it is beyond doubt that the Federal Government of Nigeria or any prosecuting authority has been vested with constitutional right of appeal in criminal prosecutions,” a statement from Malami’s spokesperson, Umar Gwandu, read.
“These rights extend to rulings on bail and right to seek to vary terms of bail, among others.
“Thus, in any circumstance where this right is waived by the prosecution, it can only be for valid reasons, including compassion, after all connected issues have been duly considered.”

He also said, “It is further appalling to note that in a bid to garner media hype in condemnation of a valid governmental action taken in good faith and in the interest of the general public, Mr Falana, SAN, resorted to quoting non-existing sections of the constitution by stating that, ‘Mr Malami (SAN), should have apologised to Col. Dasuki (retd.) and Mr Sowore in accordance with Section 32(6) of the 1999 Constitution.
“It is unfortunate that a senior member of the bar could resort to concoctions and fabrications of non-existing provisions just to score cheap media publicity.”

<h3>N-Power December Stipend Payment ‘Alert’ Entering</h3>
Beneficiaries of the Federal Government’s N-Power initiative have already started receiving stipend payment for the month of December, 2019.
A graduate beneficiary of the scheme, Ademeso Temitope of Batch B who shared the update with <a href="http://www.concise.ng/">this online news medium</a> on Tuesday morning disclosed that the twelfth month stipend was paid very early in the day.
Earlier, sending a message to the government, Ademeso told Concise News: “The government should continue with their good deed; The Lord will reward them as they continue to help the youths.”
He added: “We are still expecting much from them, better than this.

Beneficiaries of the Federal Government’s N-Power initiative have already started receiving stipend payment for the month of December, <a href="https://www.concise.ng/category/news/">Concise News</a> can confirm.
A graduate beneficiary of the scheme, Ademeso Temitope of Batch B who shared the update with <a href="http://www.concise.ng">this online news medium</a> on Tuesday morning disclosed that the twelfth month stipend was paid very early in the day.
Earlier, sending a message to the government, Ademeso told Concise News: “The government should continue with their good deed; The Lord will reward them as they continue to help the youths.”

It would be recalled that beneficiaries (both Batch A and Batch B) throughout the federation <a href="https://www.concise.ng/2019/12/31/n-power-questions-raised-on-december-stipend/">had been expecting their stipend</a>, as they were promised ‘on or before December 20th’.
Sadiya Umar Farouq, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development made <a href="https://www.concise.ng/2019/12/02/n-power-minister-reveals-when-october-november-stipends-will-be-paid/">the pledge some weeks ago</a>.
The Federal Government in November said it spent N360 billion in two years to pay 500,000 graduates under its N-Power scheme.
The government said the payments started in 2016 with graduates employed under the scheme getting N30,000 (approximately 83 US Dollars) monthly stipend.

Governor Emeka Ihedioha of <a href="https://www.concise.ng/news/">Imo</a> on Monday renamed Jacob Zuma Road in Owerri after First Republic parliamentarian and minister, Chief Mbazuluike Amaechi.
Concise News reports that in a statement issued in Owerri by Chibuike Onyeukwu, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, stated that Ihedioha announced the re-christening at an occasion to mark Amaechi’s 90th birthday in Owerri.
<a href="http://www.concise.ng">This online news medium</a> recalls that the naming of the dual carriage way after the former South African president by former Governor Rochas Okorocha <a href="https://www.concise.ng/2017/11/24/okorocha-amount-spent-statues/">attracted public opprobrium against the administration</a>.
In a speech, Ihedioha described Amaechi as an icon, whose contributions to nation building should not be ignored.
“Dr Amaechi is an icon, one of the founding fathers of the nation, whose contributions to nationhood should not be overlooked.
“Amaechi remains an inspiration, who stood and defended those principles that remain valuable to nation building,” the statement further read.
Amaechi, a native of Ukpor in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra, was a member of the House of Representatives in 1959.
The nonagenarian was later appointed the Minister of Aviation and Transport in 1962.
According to the statement, former President Olusegun Obasanjo was stated to have prayed God to grant the Imo governor the strength to live up to the expectations of the people of Imo.
Obasanjo was quoted to have said that with Ihedioha’s wealth of experience as a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, he was well equipped to govern the state successfully.
“I believe that God, who made you governor of Imo this time, will give you the knowledge to do what needs to be done for Imo to make it one of the leading states in the country.
“While congratulating you on your electoral victory,  I pray the Almighty God to enable you to govern well.
“Having eminently served as Deputy Speaker, you are eminently qualified to make Imo State one of the best states.
“You have to bring to bear your wealth of knowledge and extensive contact to the service of Imo and South-East,” the statement added.
The statement also quoted the President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Dr John Nwodo, to have said that Ihedioha portended “hope and a new beginning for the Igbo nation” with his quality leadership.
“We have a governor who is humble, experienced and not afraid to appoint people with more academic accomplishments than him or those who have more exposure in governance than him,” it quoted Nwodo to have also said.

Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly on Saturday got brand new Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) as Christmas gifts from the state Governor, Nyesome Wike.
ConciseNews understands that the governor handed out the gifts less than 24 hours after the lawmakers passed the state’s 2020 budget of N530.81bn.
While receiving the gifts at government house, Port Harcourt, the Speaker, Ikuinyi Ibani, on behalf of his colleagues commended the governor for giving priority to the welfare of lawmakers.
He added that the lawmakers will continue to work closely with the executive, adding that they will continue to give meaningful contribution in their service and their productivity will be higher
“The Governor handed to us the keys of official cars that belong to members of the State Assembly. This is how it should be and we are very grateful to him for providing such leadership and ensuring that members’ walfare are always given priority.
“Members shall continue to give meaningful contribution in their service and their productivity will be higher.”
“On behalf of the Rivers State House of Assembly, we have sent our Christmas wishes before now and it is our wish that God will grant him the enablement to continue to do what is right for the people.” he said.
Corroborating the speaker, the Deputy Speaker, Ehie Edison, governor Wike has gifted 32 members of the House official brand new Sports Utility Vehicles, PM News reports.
“We are most grateful and astonished and this gift is to aid our work. It will ensure that we can carry out our responsibilities as lawmakers.
“We assure him that we will continue to maintain this relationship and will not let the governor, Rivers government and people down,” he said.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero reckons the 14-point gap between the defending champions and Premier League leaders Liverpool is “too hard” to overturn.
He said that City need to now concentrate purely on earning a top-four finish.
“Now, Liverpool is too hard. We have to focus just on winning because we need to play Champions League next season.
“We have to play the same way and see what happens,” said the Argentine, City’s all-time top scorer.
City beat Sheffield United 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday but remain far adrift of Liverpool, who have an extra game in hand.
Juergen Klopp’s unbeaten side had earlier beaten Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at Anfield.
Pep Guardiola, City’s manager, declined to declare the title race was over but repeated his view that it was pointless to even discuss the issue.
“It’s unrealistic to think about it. When a team has the numbers that Liverpool has, why should we think about it when we are 14 or 17 behind?
“(We have to) prepare, play good, better, be as close as possible, play the knockout (cup competitions) and prepare for next season. Next season will be here and, hopefully, we can do better,” he said.
Asked whether it was now tough after two title-winning years to motivate his team for the more modest goal of qualifying for the Champions League, Guardiola said: “The best motivation is to try to play good, win games, that’s the best.”
The Spaniard could not resist taking aim at the Premier League fixture list, which saw his team play at Wolves on Friday before being in action 48 hours later.
City are next in action on New Year’s Day when they host Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton at the Etihad.
“Now, I must say thank you to the Premier League for giving us three days for the next game. We appreciate it,” he said.

The President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has claimed the company lost 25 billion in accruable revenue from 2017 to the 2019 financial year due to the Apapa gridlock in Lagos State.
Concise News reports that Dangote said this on Sunday as he inspected reconstruction work on the 35-kilometre Apapa-Oshodi-Oworonsoki-Ojota highway in Lagos alongside the Minister of Works and Housing Babatunde Fashola.
“This road will actually open up the economy. It will bring a lot of jobs and a lot of factories that have moved out will be able to move back,” he said.
“What I can also assure you is that this road will be finished before the end of next year.’’
On his part, Fashola noted that the road would be delivered end of next year and that with its quality, it would last for more than 40 years.
“We expect that by end of 2020, the entire road network will be finished; you will have a road that will last for 40 years,’’ the former Lagos State leader assured.
The reconstruction is the first since the road was finished in 1978. The first attempt to rehabilitate the road at N15bn was in 2013.
Work, however, stopped after the general elections in 2015 until 2017 when the Dangote Group came up with a proposal to fix the road.
